Alumni & Faculty Spotlight

SHSU welcomes new faculty to theSchool of Music family!

Nina Bledsoe, Adjunct (Viola), is a passionate performer and a sought after educator. Nina has been the recipient of fellowships to the Aspen Music Festival and School and to the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival. She holds a BM from Florida State University, a MM from Georgia State University, and is working towards a DMA in viola performance from the University of Houston.

Joshua Bronfman, Associate Professor of Music & Director of Choral Activities, directs the SHSU Chorale and Women’s Choirs, as well as teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in choral conducting and choral literature. He is also creator and host of Choral History, a podcast dedicated to conversations with choral conductors from around the world. Joshua received his PhD in Choral Music Education and Choral Conducting at Florida State Univesity, his MM from Oregon State University and his BA from Florida State University.

Melissa Cummins, Adjunct (Musicology), will defend her PhD dissertation in March at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. Her musicological research interests include twentieth century French opera and women composers of opera and musical theater. She earned Master’s degrees in musicology from South Dakota State University and in Instrumental Music Education from Southeast Missouri State University.

Brian Graiser, Adjunct (Percussion), is a contemporary percussionist, composer, teacher and clinician. He earned his DMA in percussion performance at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music and holds his MM degree in performance from the University of Toronto and his BM degrees in composition and performance from the University of Georgia.

Kendall Moore, Adjunct (Study of Music/Jazz Lab Band), is a trombonist, composer, and arranger originally from the Chicago Metropolitan area. He recently completed his DMA at the University of Miami in Jazz Instrumental Performance and is actively composing and arranging for various ensembles in addition to performing with his own ensembles.

Maho Sasaki, Adjunct (Music Therapy), holds her degrees in music (BA) and in keyboard performance (MM) from Washington University in St. Louis. She later completed the Master’s Equivalency Program at SHSU and received her MM in Music Therapy. Ms. Sasaki has provided services to a wide variety of populations including patients in stroke/TBI rehabilitation, individuals with aphasia, Parkinson’s disease, children with autism and cerebral palsy, young adults with developmental disorders and has also worked with children and adolescents at risk with emotional and behavioral disturbances.

VOICE

Nicole Asel, Assistant Professor of Voice, holds a DMA in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from The University of Colorado at Boulder, a MM from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a BM from Ithaca College. Highly decorated in awards and performances, she is an active member of NATS and enjoys her work as a guest adjudicator and clinician for vocal competitions.

Tony Boutté, Associate Professor of Voice, holds a BA from Louisiana Tech University, an MM from Eastman School of Music, and a DMA from University of Maryland. As a tenor, he has established himself as a first-rate singer of many styles including opera, art song, oratorio and chamber music from the Baroque period to today. He co-directs ARCANUM, a boroque ensemble based in Houston, and is artistic director of New American Voices.

Wesley Lawrence, Assistant Professor of Voice, holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance from Gordon College, and both MM and DMA from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. Dr. Lawrence has sung both oratorio and opera throughout America and Europe and is the 2014 recipient of the UND Foundation’s Lydia & Arthur Saiki Faculty Award for Individual Excellence in Teaching.

Deborah Popham, Assistant Professor of Voice, has performed internationally as a soloist throuhout Canada, Italy and Switzerland. She attended the University of Akron, earning a BM in voice performance and two BA degrees in English and Philosophy. She earned her Master of Music in Music Theater Performance (Opera) and her DMA in Voice Performance. at Arizona State University.

Alumni & Faculty SpotlightSHSU JAZZ NEWS

SHSU Jazz Ensemble’s 2016 TMEA performance and live recording selected to be on Naxos of America! Under the direction of Aric Schneller, SHSU jazz ensemble’s high quality performance is available on CD in all major music download sites, including Amazon, iTunes, and Muzonic to name a few. To find it, simply search for ‘SHSU-jazz ensemble-TMEA’!

Aric Schneller has just finished authoring a chapter entitled, “Lessons 11: The Trombone Section” for the new online jazz resource About That Jazz by nationally recognized authors and educators, J. Richard Dunscomb and Jose Antonio Diaz. This new resource premiered at the 70th Annual Midwest Clinic - International Band and Orchestra convention.

Please join us for the 7th Annual SHSU Bill Watrous Jazz Festival on March 31 & April 1, 2017 at SHSU. Featuring guest artists and performances, this event is not one to miss! For information please check the School of Music website.

Bachelor of Music, ‘94

Sal earned his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from SHSU School of Music in 1994. While at Sam Houston, Sal studied conducting under Dr. Carol Smith and Dr. Gary Sousa and studied saxophone under Dr. Harley Rex and Ralph Burton. He continued his music education at The University of Tennessee where he earned his Master’s degree in Instrumental Conducting. While there, Sal served as Graduate Assistant under Gary Sousa and assisted in conducting the UT Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and the UT Chamber Winds. Sal has been a part of numerous conducting symposiums featuring composers and conductors including Donald Grantham, Cindy McTee, Michael Colgrass, Fisher Tull, Robert Reynolds, Colonel John R. Bourgeois and Craig Kirchhoff.

Sal has 20 years of experience as a band director in public schools including Spring Branch, Montgomery, Huntsville and Conroe ISD and is currently head band director at Bozman Intermediate School in Conroe. As an active classical and jazz musician, he has performed with groups including the Conroe Symphony Orchestra, Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, Jene Keen Jazz Orchestra, The Crighton Theater, The Owen Theater and the Opera Leggera Company. More recently, Sal has taken on the role of Orchestra Director at the Owen Theater where he has directed the musicals “Meet Me in St. Louis” and “The Little Mermaid”. Sal is married to Rachel Jimenez, who is a fine clarinetist. Together they have two children: Kirk, who is currently in the SHSU School of Music as a Piano Performance major; and daughter Cadence, a sophomore at Conroe High School who is principle oboist in the Wind Ensemble. The Jimenez family enjoys performing together in musicals as well as in their church orchestra.
