Southern California Holiday Luncheon

The Southern California LMG held its annual Holiday luncheon at Portofino’s Restaurant in La Habra, California on Saturday, December 6. The venue and menu selections were carefully arranged for by our late partner Howard Wiese, long time VP of Hospitality. The restaurant specializes in Italian cuisine and it features an authentic Mediterranean décor. Portofino’s is owned by JCPenney retiree Nick D’gidio.

An invocation by Paul Simons started the afternoon. The five course meal included: brochette, polenta and salad, choice of one of four entrees including pork, sole, chicken or lasagna. Tiramisu capped this fine meal. Wine was generously provided by the restaurant.

At the conclusion of the meal, President Mark Schultz welcomed everyone present and presided over a short meeting. He began by presenting the 50-Year Pin to retiree Bob Beard. Schultz then welcomed first time attendee Anna Hecht, former JCPenney store and district office management associate. And then Schultz introduced another first time attendee Jim Ellis who last worked with many of us as a Regional Merchandiser in the Buena Park Office.

Schultz reviewed past events and tentative plans of gatherings in 2015. Schultz went on to introduce all the LMG board members. At that point he introduced Larry Noble, Secretary for both the LMG and the H.C.S.C. Foundation.

Noble began his presentation by providing highlights about the startup of the Foundation which was incorporated in California in 1960. Noble told the audience that the concept came together at the very first H.C.S.C. National Convention held in 1959 in Denver, Colorado. Then in 1960, Mr. Penney himself made a sizeable contribution to get things going. Noble explained to us the importance of the Foundation and how it operates.

President Schultz thanked everyone present for attending and wished all a safe and happy Holiday season.

Southern California

The Southern California LMG convened its annual Spring Fling celebration on February 18 in the Lower Desert of Southern California. The headquarters for the group was the Hilton Palm Springs Resort where members enjoyed special rates and where several of the events were staged. The three day soiree was ushered in by temperatures in the low 80’s. For many visitors who traveled from far off locations, they must have felt that the local chamber of commerce had pulled off something special for the JCPenney group.

As is our custom, opening night for this event began with a cocktail reception featuring heavy hors d’ oeuvres. Ross & Marilyn Willour graciously hosted our group again. The Clubhouse of the Four Seasons in Palm Springs has become our starting point for nearly five years. Guests began arriving at 5:00 PM. Quite a few H.C.S.C. members and guests traveled quite a distance to attend this year’s event.

Vyda Bridwell came up from the Phoenix area to join the festivities. Steve and Dianne Carter also traveled over from the Valley of the Sun and it was great to see all of them. John Liddle came down from Sacramento to party. Bill McGrath and his bride Mary Beth traveled over from Flagstaff for his first Spring Fling. Bill just graduated from JCPenney, retiring as store manager at the end of January. Bill and Mary Beth couldn’t wait to join the H.C.S.C. so they could catch up with their many Southern California partners. Dave and Jan Small were also able to make the event, traveling to the Lower Desert from their home in Cave Creek, Arizona.

Hal and Mary Monroe and Jim and Edna McKeown all traveled down from the Northern California club to join in the party. Terry Prindiville and his bride Kay returned to the West Coast and both were warmly greeted. Sam and Laurie Page trekked up from Tuscon as Spring Fling has been on their radar for many years. Texas folks Mike and Flo Ray, Rudy and Diana Melendez,

and Ron and Ruth Winkler all were able to make it for the umpteenth year in a row. The Northwest was represented by Wayne and Rosalie Schlaefli, Tom and Kathleen Cotton, Stan and Jeannie Cook, and Doug and Barbara Rush. Cotton and Schlaefli have been regular guests at the Spring Fling party.

On Thursday, members scattered in several directions to take in some of the planned activities. Five teams of golfers competed in the morning on the Cimarron Golf Resort in neighboring Cathedral City. The team of Jeff Paige, Bill McGrath, Ron Rhoads and Jim McKeown came in first narrowly beating the runner up team of Keith Armbruster, David Small, Sam Page and Tom Cotton by two strokes. Marilyn Willour escorted a large group to the Annenberg Estate in Rancho Mirage. While they weren’t able to tour the residences they did have

the opportunity to visit the Annenberg Museum and to check out the grounds at Sunnylands. Other members chose during the day to shop and relax in either Palm Springs or on the El Paseo in nearby Palm Desert. Later that night, 52 members and guests traveled to the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert to view the only performance this year in the desert of the Vienna Boys Choir. They performed to a packed house. It was most entertaining, combining liturgical and modern music during a two-hour program.

On Friday morning, both the H.C.S.C. Foundation and the Southern California LMG conducted separate business meetings. The Foundation had several new applicants to approve for financial aid. Plus John Liddle presented a report to the board on the progress of their investments during the past year. The social club agenda was concerned with finalizing dates for 2015 events.

It was decided to pursue a wine tasting and brunch at Wilson Creek Winery in Temecula on Saturday, May 30. Details about this event will be coming out shortly. It was also decided that the Third Annual Partners BBQ will be held on Saturday, September 12 at Lake Mission Viejo. An ad-hoc committee of Stan Newton and Frank Fitzpatrick was set up to button up all the details. Information for this event will be coming out to members in May.

The final event on Friday was a very generous brunch at the Hilton Palm Springs Resort. Folks visited and ate from 10:00 AM until noon and then began their travels. President Mark Schultz shared a few words with the group thanking them for joining the party at the 2015 Spring Fling.

The H.C.S.C. Southwest LMG held its annual Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at the Stonebriar Country Club. The evening started off with hors d’oeuvres followed by dinner.

The H.C.S.C. Southwest LMG had a pretty active year since our Christmas Party last year. In March we had a Breakfast at Le Peeps, in April our Frisco RoughRiders Baseball Game, in July our Dallas City Bus Tour with Rose-Mary Rumbley, in October our visit to the Bush Library and our November breakfast at Le Peeps.

A proposal was made to modify the By-Laws of the Southwest Group of the H.C.S.C. Motion was unanimously accepted. Next we elected our Officers and Board for 2015. The motion was made by Jim Hailey and seconded by Tom

McGurren. President, Jeannette Siegel took over the balance of the meeting and announced that we have two events planned for 2015: a coffee and breakfast get-together in March, and a Frisco RoughRiders baseball game in May.

After dinner, H.C.S.C. National Chairman, Sharon Leight, presented a framed letter from the Board of Directors to retiring Board member, Tom McGurren, thanking him for his six years of active participation on the Board and his sincere dedication to the principles of H.C.S.C. After our meeting was closed, the evening continued with musical entertainment provided by Nelson Miller. The Christmas Party was attended by 79 Southwest LMG members who had an enjoyable time visiting with old and new friends!

Thirty-two members and guests were welcomed by President Tom Putman at the Shallmar Country Club in Tempe, Arizona on December 1, 2014. Nancy Putman, wife of Tom and a retired teacher, presented table gift decorations. Tom led the Pledge of Allegiance and Nancy Putman gave the invocation. The Sunshine report was then given by Vyda Bridwell. Drew Thornton, Human Resource Leader at the Christown Spectrum B-Box facility, was our guest and gave an update of the progress that JCPenney is making throughout the country.

Drew shared highlights of the “Black Friday” activities, the early opening on Thanksgiving Day, the Company’s marketing program, reminding all that the Company was going back to the basic product lines like: ANA, Arizona, etc that were the mainstay of JCPenney. Drew indicated that staff members have been rewarded with the first merit increase in four years which has had a tremendous impact on the morale of the associates. The “Warrior Program” is still in place and Drew reminded everyone about the “jingle more” campaign of getting customers back.

The Southern California LMG lost a valuable member this past summer with the passing of Howard Wiese. Howard’s involvement with the club spanned three decades. Frankly, we cannot remember a time when Howard wasn’t participating on the H.C.S.C. board managing one activity or another. Up to the end he was extremely involved, most recently leading the club from his post of Vice President of Activities. Senior club members marveled at his drive and energy; newer members had the chance to get to know an outstanding JCPenney graduate.

“In my time as president I remember the many phone calls and so many ideas that Howard would have. His heart was stuck on trying to make things better for all of his Penney friends. If the word bulldog fit anyone it was Howard. He would get his mind set on something and just pursue it until it got done. He was mindful of expenses and he was always making sure that the club paid less for an activity than we planned. I am sure that is what he is doing today, helping the Lord, planning to make things better for us all. See you soon my friend.” Alan Rogers, SoCal President, 2008-2009

Howard had over his 46 years, one of the most interesting careers in terms of assignments and experiences. Early on, while working in the Omaha, Nebraska store, Manager Cooper Smith had so much confidence in Howard that he would send him to New York for major buying trips...starting at age 19. Howard built relationships with partners in the home office that lasted over many decades. Howard also managed the fashion department that sold the very first bridal dress in JCPenney. Howard was promoted to Group Merchandiser in 1963. Howard received another promotion when he was sent to Kansas City as Group A Merchandiser in 1969. He eventually was promoted to District Personnel Manager in Kansas City. Howard managed four different JCPenney stores. Howard earned The Chairman’s Award five times during his career.

“When I became president of the SoCal H.C.S.C. I had many questions about how the organization functioned. Early on it became amazing to me how many of the answers involved the name “Howard”. Our first big event was the very popular Spring Fling in Palm Springs. When I inquired about who would arrange for the hotel and the activities the answer came back “don’t worry, Howard has it under control”. It turns out that Howard was the guy behind the planning for every event. Through the years I have grown to respect Howard even more for his tireless work for our club plus other organizations. I often reflect how lucky I was to have Howard on the team. Howard, you were truly the go-to guy!” Ron Rhoads, SoCal President, 2010-2011

“When I followed Ron as president of the club, I decided to use a series of informal breakfast meetings to set the course on our activities. I was pushing for a schedule that called for an activity each quarter. And I wanted to use our local webpage to inform our members so that they could save the date a year in advance. I would use this meeting as a sounding board to sort out the minutia in whatever we were planning. And then I would go back to our board at our next quarterly meetings to gain approval. Many of us would enter with a blank notepad and the single page agenda that I provided. Howard would enter Corky’s with binders and folders, line folders from hotels and restaurants, and information about racetracks, museums and wineries. He was always prepared. Two plus hours after the first cup of coffee we had a plan to present. We crafted some great events for our members. I miss you, Howard!” Frank Fitzpatrick, SoCal President, 2012-2013

Howard worked as a Regional Merchandise Manager and he was part of the team that rolled out the first Women’s Fashion Project to our stores. Over his career Howard worked in four different regions; reported to eleven different Regional Managers; and numbered thirteen different District Managers as his partner.

“I was privileged to work with Howard for the first seven months of my term as president of SoCal H.C.S.C. I learned early on that he was a driving force to our group. He took his job as VP of Activities very seriously and he was not shy to share his opinion on any subject. Howard always gave me regular status reports on the progress of upcoming events. His follow thru was impressive and he knew what he was doing. To say that Howard cared is an understatement, and if there were anyone who bled JCPenney blue I know it would be Howard. He was a good big hearted guy who really enjoyed helping people. Personalities like Howard are what has helped this club build the reputation we enjoy. Thank you,Howard.” Mark Schultz, SoCal President, 2014-2015

Ron Salzetti once used a famous quote from Winston Churchill that he felt best described Howard: “Sometimes it’s not enough to do your very best. You must do what is required.” This is the way Howard lived out first his JCPenney career and then his retirement years. And he expected everyone around him to perform in the same manner.

Rest in Peace, old friend!

Dear JCPenney Retiree,

We are contacting you because we want to make sure that you are aware of the H.C.S.C. Foundation, Inc. (the “Foundation”). Our sole mission is to provide financial support to qualified retired associates of the JCPenney Company. While we are not related to, or sponsored by the JCPenney Company, Inc., all of the Foundation’s Board members are retired associates, just like you.

A Brief History of the Foundation In 1959, the H.C.S.C. Club held its first National Convention in Denver in honor of Mr. Penney’s 84th birthday. During the convention, it was mentioned that several retired management associates were having financial difficulties and needed assistance. A committee was formed to study the situation. It was decided that a foundation would be established to provide assistance to qualifying associates. The Foundation was incorporated in California on September 20, 1960. Mr. Penney made a sizeable personal contribution.

H.C.S.C. members have been very generous in their donations to the Foundation and continue to donate annually. Some members have included the Foundation in their wills. Assistance is given as determined by the Foundation’s Board. The Board reviews each applicant’s income, living necessities and medical expenses. Some applicants are in their own homes but require supplemental help in meeting basic needs. Many are in nursing homes and require extended care. Over the years, the Foundation has provided assistance totaling more than $4.3 million to qualified retired JCPenney associates in need of financial assistance.

We need your help in identifying qualified retirees who have a financial need. We know there are folks out there who either do not know that the Foundation exists, or who are “Penney Proud” and have not shared their situation with anyone.

Requirements for assistance are as follows: Any retired associate of JCPenney or a surviving spouse of a deceased associate. At least 60 years of age, with 20 years of honorable service.

If you do not need help and would like to help support those that do, the Foundation welcomes and appreciates any and all donations. Donations can be made in memory of a person of your choosing or in support of the Foundation. A letter of acknowledgement is sent to the donor and a memorial card is sent to the surviving spouse or family member. The amount donated is not mentioned in the memorial card. With the donor’s permission, their name and recipient’s name will be published in the Partner’s Magazine.

The Foundation encourages H.C.S.C. members to refer qualified associates who are believed to be in financial need to either Larry Noble or Paul Simons, contact information below. Once referrals are received, the applicant will be sent an application. Applications are confidentially reviewed by the Foundation Board.

Please mail donations to Larry Noble at the address listed below:
