service Learning – sPring 2014 courses

service Learning is a kind of experiential education that connects classroom learning with community service. in collaboration with community organizations, students learn about and apply tools of the academic discipline and specific course concepts in their service experiences. this combination enhances academic learning and civic awareness while also providing a meaningful service to and with the community. course credit and grading are for the learning not for the service. the service activities for the course are similar to the readings, lectures, class discussions and other assignments – all are contexts for student learning. courses will appear with the following notation in the right-hand column of the schedule of classes: serL or serL option.

serL = all students in the course are required to participate in service learning serL option = students have a choice to participate in service learning as a final project and/or in lieu of another comparable project.

Jesuit universities Humanitarian action netWorK ( JuHan)

sPring 2014 courses

the Jesuit universities Humanitarian action network (JuHan) was created to make sophistication in humanitarian response a hallmark of Jesuit undergraduate education. grounded in the Jesuit tradition of developing “men and women for others,” JuHan seeks to advance both undergraduate humanitarian education by bringing students into the professional field at an early stage in their education as well as by providing students who are not pursuing humanitarian action careers with the knowledge and skills needed to fulfill their responsibilities as engaged citizens.

JuHan focuses on developing an educational program that places emphasis on the ethical dimensions of humanitarian action while leveraging the centuries-old Jesuit commitment to education globally to reach across institutional, national and international boundaries and provide students and faculty with a wide range of resources and opportunities. JuHan also provides an opportunity for faculty, students and staff at Jesuit universities to collaborate on joint project, research programs and curriculum development.

undergraduate registration Process

• students with a financial or dean of students hold will not be able to register.

• students need to see their faculty advisor prior to registration to discuss course selection and to receive their Pin.

• students are NoT excused from class to register. This includes cutting class or leaving class early.

• on-line registration will be by class year: one day for all students in each class to register for his/her courses. classes will go on-line in alphabetical groupings every 45 minutes starting at 8:30 a.m. on their designated day. spring varsity athletes will precede the alphabetical groupings.

• students will register for major, minor, core and elective courses on their class registration day and are limited to a maximum of 20 credits.

• the on-line registration system will be active for each class until 11:59 p.m. then the student’s on-line registration and Pin will be turned off until tuesday, november 26 when add/drop begins.

• there will be a day in between each class registration for departments to review registrations and for students who missed their registration to register in person in the registrar’s office.

• the university reserves the right to cancel courses for which there are insufficient registration or change time codes or professors as deemed necessary.

• most courses will be open during the on-line registration period. some departments (with courses that have specific populations) may incrementally increase the maximum number of spaces in some of their courses by class.

waitlist Courses

the waitlist for courses will be turned on at the beginning of on-line registration, except for courses with maximums that are increased incrementally.

• When a space opens up in a class, the first student on the waitlist will be notified via his/her Fairfield student e-mail account, with instructions on how to register for the waitlisted class. They will have 24 hours from the time the email is sent to register for the class. if there is a conflict in his/her schedule, they will have to resolve that issue before registering for the waitlisted class. if they fail to register for the class by the deadline stated in the email, they will be taken off of the waitlist for that class.

• the use of the waitlists and the process of notifying students will run from monday, december 2 through Friday, January 10. during this period, the registrar’s office will not honor write-ins for closed courses from faculty. the electronic waitlist will be the only mechanism for filling available openings in courses. starting January 16, students can register for classes with open seats on a first come, first serve basis. during the add/drop period of January 16 – January 22, the registrar will accept write-ins from faculty for closed courses.

automatic Rollover Courses

automatic rollover courses are full-year courses that continue from the Fall semester to the spring semester typically with the same professor and the same time code. everyone in the class is rolled. if you wish to change your rollover course, you may change it during your registration period on a space available basis. department chairs can make changes in rollovers as is necessary. Professors will announce in class specifics concerning whether their class is a rollover for spring and what the rollover will be.

note: if you have a financial or dean of student’s hold at the time rollovers are processed, you will not be rolled over into the next class in the sequence.

the following courses are automatic rollovers:

We will begin with the silent feature the Wind, then several films from 1930-50, such as King Kong and the Flesh and the devil, and on to the 1970s when the genre dominated at the box office and gave panicked voice to the wider culture’s “crisis in confidence.” Jaws, towering inferno, the Poseidon adventure and earthquake also helped usher in technological and industrial changes that change the look feel and business of commercial films. the course will end with a look at how the 20th century disaster film bled into 21st century apocalyptic anxieties and fantasies that led to one movie news headline to declare, “these days the end is always near,” including the post-apocalyptic Hunger games. this course satisfies an elective for Ftm majors, a history/analysis requirement for minors, and a history requirement for vPa core. three credits; may be taken twice. fTm 107C – Television Genres: sitcoms (H)this section of television genres will focus on television genre theory applied to the history of american television comedy. as we learn the foundational generic conventions of situation comedy, we will also explore comic subgenres associated with what we might call the “postmodern turn” in comic television programming. these include, among others, transgressive comedy, squirm comedy, and sex-coms. self-referential, genre-bending, visually and aurally dense, many of today’s television comedies highlight post-modern aesthetics that frequently put traditional storytelling techniques through the blender and splatter their effects in unconventional ways. We will look at television programming from a range of perspectives, including television comedy as art form, cultural commodity, political critique, and social commentary. We will consider the aesthetic and thematic developments of contemporary television comedies especially in comparison to traditional historical television comedies. through lectures, readings, screenings, discussions, student presentations, and written reflections, students will learn about the relationship between structural and generic changes, comedic effect, and narrative strategy with the primary purpose of understanding the history of television comedy, its subgenres, and the cultural moment of ‘now.’ this course may be taken twice, is an elective history/analysis course for majors and minors in the Ftm program, and fulfills a history vPa core requirement. no prerequisites. (Ftm majors and minors – fulfills requirement for history/analysis course) three credits.
