During the construction of Grand Central Terminal, 3,094,750 cubic yards of dirt and rock were removed. If you loaded it onto a train of flatbed cars, it would stretch from New York to Omaha, Nebraska. Get to know ESA Project Milestones 44th Street Ventilation Facility: The contractor is putting the final touches on the interior and exterior structures of the 44 th Street vent facility. Preparations are being made to clear the work site for the follow on contractor who will be tak ing over the site in May. 50 th Street Ventilation Facility Public Open Space: The granite pavers, fountain basin and horticultural elements have been installed as the public open space nears completion. 55th Street Ventilation Facility: On February 19, 2014, the CM013A 55 th Street Ventilation Facility contractor successfully completed excavation and drill and blast operations at 55th Street. Nearly 200,000 cubic feet of rock was removed by mechanical excavation and blasting to form and connect the plenum and shaft with the caverns 75 feet below ground. Approximately 13,000 pounds of explosives were used in 150 safely executed blasts. Concrete, rebar and waterproofing operations to build up the substructure are now underway in the cavern and the air plenum.

Lou D'AmicoProgram Executive Lou D'Amico is one of threenew program executives onEast Side Access. His mainresponsib ility is providingmanagement and oversightof the area known as ProjectControls, which includesthings like estimating,scheduling and riskmanagement; a herculeantask on a project like EastSide Access. Prior to joiningEast Side Access, Louworked for New York City'sHudson Yards DevelopmentCorporation where he heldthe position of senior vicepresident and oversaw workto build the infrastructure forthe retail space and mixeduse areas. He was alsoresponsib le for overseeingdesign and construction for anew four-acre park known asHudson Park and Boulevard;and aspects of the extensionof the #7 subway line to thewest side. How did you get your start inthe construction andengineering field?The space race in the late1960's fascinated me sowhen I went to college atPolytechnic University inBrooklyn I pursued aBachelor's degree inEngineering hoping for a jobin that field, but as theeconomy wasn't great I tooka job with a civil constructionfirm called SlatteryConstruction. That firm, nowpart of Skanska USA CivilNortheast, was working on

East Side Access Awards Two New Contracts In March 2014, Frontier Kemper Constructors was awarded thecontract for CM006 Manhattan North Structures. This contractcovers the fabrication and construction of the permanentstructural concrete lining, interior structures, and fit-out for thecaverns and tunnels previously excavated by others beneathand to the north of Grand Central Terminal. This $295 millioncontract is scheduled to get underway later this year. Also in March 2014, Tutor Perini was awarded the contract forCS179 Systems Facilities Package No.1. This contract coversthe installation of multiple systems throughout the project

the Second Avenue Subwayproject. What are some of the otherprojects that you haveworked on?After my time on the SecondAvenue Subway project, Iworked on several othertransit related projects alongthe east coast. I worked onthe Porter Square SubwayStation in Boston; FriendshipHeights Station, TenleyCircle Station, and L'EnfantPlaza in Washington, DC. Which have been the mostinteresting or challengingprojects?Much like in New York, theextensive existingunderground infrastructure inWashington DC makesconstruction in those citiesvery challenging. But themost interesting project Iworked on, before ESA ofcourse was the Big Dig inBoston because of the widerange of engineering andconstruction methods thatwere used. After a long career inconstruction, what do youthink about East SideAccess?East Side Access is a veryexciting project. Themagnitude of the work isunlike anything else and thechallenges presented by theconstruction methods, the inplace infrastructure - such asworking below an active railyard - and the multipleaccess restrictions, are whatmake this project soexciting. And of coursemuch like my experienceswith Hudson Yards, Iwelcome the opportunity tobe part of a project that willhave such a tremendousimpact on the City of NewYork.

including the backbone communications system, fiber opticnetworks, control centers, telephones, security systems, firedetection, signal power, lighting and many others. This $550million contract is also scheduled to get underway later thisyear.

New Management at East Side Access

Changes are afoot at East Side Access as the project ismoving quickly forward into a new phase of construction. Withthe completion of the tunneling and major blasting, the work willnow focus on building out the massive caverns and tunnels andinstalling the systems that will make the trains run and bringthis project to fruition. Along with the shift in the type of work, anew program executive and management team was named tolead the project forward. On March 10th, Bill Goodrich took over as the new executivevice president and senior program executive on East SideAccess. Goodrich brings over thirty years of experience in theconstruction industry to ESA. That experience began upongraduation from the United States Military Academy in WestPoint where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.Afterwards, he served in the military at Fort Lewis, Washingtonbeing promoted to Captain in the U.S. Army. Following a career where Goodrich worked on several highprofile projects, in 2008, he took a position with MTA CapitalConstruction as senior vice president and program executive onthe 2nd Avenue Subway project where he was prior to joiningthe ESA team. Joining Bill Goodrich is a new management team whichincludes dedicated program executives, who will report toGoodrich to oversee the remaining construction. Andy Thompson, Program Executive for Heavy CivilConstruction, will manage all construction contracts inManhattan and Queens, as well as the underground contractsin the Harold Interlocking. Michael Kaleda, Program Executive for Harold and ProjectWide Systems, will manage the complex above ground work inthe Harold Interlocking and the execution of the systems workthroughout East Side Access.
