Celebrating Our Diversity
Spring FLEX 2013January 22-25
2
I am very proud of the Spring 2013 FLEX Calendar as I think it reflects and celebrates the diversity of our
community, our faculty, and our students. Please attend some (or all) of our featured presentations:
Keynote Address: The Importance of Latino Heritage. Thursday, January 24, 2013, 10-11:30 AM,
Pollock Theater. Our keynote speaker this year is Juan Filipe Herrera, named California’s Poet Laureate in
March 2012. Herrera is the Tomás Rivera Chair in Creative Writing at UC Riverside. He is the son of migrant farm
workers and earned his bachelor’s degree from UCLA and holds master’s degrees from Stanford and Iowa. He
has published numerous volumes of poetry, prose, theater, children’s books and young adult novels, including
“Half of the World in Light: New and Selected Poems” which received the PEN/Beyond Margins Award, and
National Book Critics Circle Award. He was elected to the Board of Chancellors of the Academy of American
Poets, and has received the Guggenheim Fellowship in poetry, fellowships from the National Endowment for the
Arts and the California Arts Council, and the UC Berkeley Regent’s Fellowship. His discussion will focus on how
students in the Coachella Valley can be engaged in learning by tapping into the Latino heritage of the region.
Art as Catalyst for Community Education. Wednesday, January 23, 2013, 1:30-3:30 PM, N 4. Lisa
Falk, Director of Education at Arizona State Museum, will present Through the Eyes of the Eagle: Illustrating
Healthy Living, a recent exhibition and series of educational programs addressing obesity and diabetes prevention
in indigenous communities that was produced in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control, Pima County
Health Department, and the Tucson Indian Center. Discussion will also address possibilities involving local
Coachella Valley organizations and activities.
International Student Panel. Wednesday, January 23, 2013, 3:30-4:30 PM, CSSC 237. Travel around
the world for an hour with International Students who will share fascinating information about the educational
systems in their countries as compared to an American education. Learn about the challenges these brave
students have conquered as well as those they still face on their quest to obtain an American education. Most
importantly, learn how we can help International Students succeed in achieving their goals.
Educational Equity and Diversity Activities. Thursday, January 24, 2013, 2-3:30 PM, B 2. Participants
in this flex session will engage in a variety of activities (ex: Horatio Alger, Wheel of oppression, Crossover zig-zag,
Unpacking the knapsack) which are intended to enhance multicultural understanding in the classroom and offer
personal enlightenment.
3
“I Am.” Thursday, January 24, 2013, 6:30-9 PM, Pollock Theater. The feature length documentary "I Am"
poses two questions: what's wrong with our world, and what can we do to make it better? Tom Shadyac, a
leading filmaker ("Patch Adams", "Ace Ventura", "Liar, Liar", "Bruce Almighty") steps in front of the camera to share
what happened to him after a cycling accident that left him incapacitated, possibly for good. He emerged with a
new sense of purpose, determined to share his own awakening from a prior life of excess and greed, and to
investigate how he as an individual, and we as a race, could improve the way we live and walk in the world. Join
us as we follow Shadyac's quest for enlightenment and subsequent celebration of the human spirit.
Celebrating César Chávez. Friday, January 25, 2013, 2-3:30 PM, B 2. Please join the presenters in a
working activity to plan a Spring Semester tribute to Cesar Chavez that will connect our students with the living
history of their community.
As usual, please take advantage of the many learning, technology, student services, personal development,
faculty information, school/discipline, and adjunct centered presentations. This spring’s FLEX is a robust offering
and I sincerely hope you enjoy it. Take advantage of our expanded FLEX calendar and join us for lunch
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (see details in the schedule).
Best,
Ed Reed

This Blackboard training approach is different than those we have offered in the past. A Blackboard lab session
implies active learning of skills. It is a chance for participants to work with and talk to each other, to experiment,
explore, discuss, reflect and draw appropriate conclusions from their work. There will be several lab attendants
present during the duration of the session to help you with your specific Blackboard questions regarding your
course. There will be several guided activities lasting no longer than 10 minutes each throughout the duration of
the lab.

Writing is a form of thinking, and thinking is a necessary component of good intentional writing. But both writers
and thinkers of all kinds can be paralyzed by the dreaded blank page. How do I start? What am I going to say?
INSPIRATION software breaks through this barrier by allowing students to brainstorm in a visual environment,
shuffling and linking words and ideas into a coherent order. Your students can start from a single notion and build
from there or work from one of over 100 pre-existing organizing diagrams in areas like language arts, physical
sciences, social sciences, and critical thinking and planning. Try it out yourself in this hands-on activity and imagine
how such a tool might help you to help your students.

This presentation will serve as an introduction to the R software package and a demonstration of its use in
analyzing the results of the Math 54 common final. I’ll introduce two R objects, vectors and data frames and some
of the operations to manipulate these objects. R can also be used to simulate random samples from a population
with a given distribution; we will use this to simulate the results of the common final exam. Then we’ll use the
robust plotting capabilities of R to analyze the results. We’ll generate histograms, boxplots, stripcharts, jitter plots,
density plots and probability mass functions. If time permits, we’ll see how a sequence of commands can be saved in
a script file that can later be called from the command line.

During the Summer 2012 session, the Title V HSI Enrollment Services department piloted a college readiness
initiative. The goal of the program was to provide students with an EDGE at COD by providing 4 weeks of
intensive review of math, English and reading skills, counseling, financial aid assistance, and supplemental instruction,
all in an effort to have students engage in the college and reassess into higher level courses; ultimately decreasing
the amount of basic skills courses required. Attend this workshop to hear more about this exciting initiative.
