Letter from the President

It is wonderful to greet spring time once again. Thankfully, the winter just passed was

mild and we all are as keen as ever to get going for the new season.

I am grateful to the membership for their confidence inre-electing me for a second term as Club President. Thisyear, more than ever, we have planned a variety ofevents that will suit all tastes.

We as a Club are looking forward to the visit ofour international colleagues, members of The

Model T Ford Register of Great Britain who willspend a week amongst us in June 2012. At time ofwriting there is an entry of 35 Cars from Scotland,England, Holland and USA. I am sure that our memberswill give them the welcome they deserve while on theirsix day Tour in Ireland and join in all or part of the event.

Safety as always is paramount. You will observe that we expect all participants in Clubevents to be equipped with visible vests, a triangle and a fire extinguisher and at alltimes obey the directions given by voluntary marshals.

Catherine and I look forward to meeting you all during the 2012 season.

Kind regards

Letters to the EditorSirWe were all very concerned regarding yesterday’s incident (15

thApril 2012). From my

point of view, the facts are, we were not aware, that the car had departed on its ownseparate route without have the courtesy to advise us. On exiting the manor hotel

yesterday, some Model T cars chose, at lib, to goto the scene of the accident, others chose tofollow the designated home route, which meantour stewards did not know the number of carson the home stretch. Also the number ofparticipant cars that stopped and choose toremain at the accident scene on a verydangerous bend, as onlookers to the accident, initself, poised a greater threat to anotherpotential accident. I understand, earlier in the

route, some cars broke down and again onlookers are putting themselves and others indanger of a road accident. I suggest, in the light of yesterday’s experience, you shouldreview the breakdown and safety procedures for your forthcoming international tour.RegardsDavid CuddyAdare16

thApril 2012

SirWell done to David and Marian on organizing today’s Model T Rally – you and Mum dida great job. In light of the unfortunate accident that took place today, I have a numberof suggestions for the Model T Club to improve safety at these events going forward.

In my experience of Model T rallies, I can recall too many incidences where Model Tdrivers have disobeyed stewards’ instructions(e.g. over-taking, not following the lead car, notfollowing the designated route, departingbefore the appointed time etc.).

This is tremendously stressful for organiserswho are endeavoring to run as safe andenjoyable an event as possible. In order tomaximize safety at these events, I suggest that a

Page 6: Spring 2012 Spring 2012 - Irish Model T Ford Clubirishmodeltclub.ie/files/2012/10/The-Irish-T-Times-Spring-2012.pdf · The Irish T. Times Spring 2012. Page 6. I would like my thoughts

formal ‘Code of Etiquette’ be created by the Irish Model T Club, which is shared withevery member.

Suggested points for inclusion;

Ensure that your car is road-worthy

Ensure that your car is full of fuel before you depart (carry spare fuel with you ifnecessary)

Carry an emergency kit with you (see below)

Obey the rules of the road

Obey the rules of the event

Adhere to the stewards’ instructions at all times

Advise the organizers / stewards if you wish to deviate from the route, or if youexperience a breakdown situation

Drive at an appropriate speed and keep a safe distance from the vehicle infront of you.

Going forward, I suggest that the following should take place at the start of every ModelT rally:

A safety address prior to commencement of the event

Announcement of the rules pertaining to the particular event

Instructions regarding what to do in case of breakdown / emergency

Distribution of a map and emergency contact details to all drivers

Similarly, I think it would be no harm to advise club members to carry an emergency kitwith them in their cars at all times. Suggested contents include;

Fully-charged mobile phone

Fire extinguisher

2 x yellow safety vests

2 x triangle reflectors

First aid kit

Torch

Bottle of water

Blanket

Sir,I purchased my 1927 Tudor (re.g. no. AI 3241) from my wife's friend in Cobh, Co. Corkand also made trips up to Co. Mayo to see one of the previous owners. That was back inthe early 1980's and I'm sorry to say that the restoration is still not completed , whatwith children, their marriages and now grandchildren. It was always my intention totake it back to Cobh to show my wife's relatives and friends over there. However, Inever made contact with members of the Irish Owners Club to find out if they knowanything further on the history of my T. If you could help in this capacity I would bemost grateful.kind regards,Charles ParkinsOxford, OX3 [email protected]

My friendJason hopefully was allowed home after A & E but as yet have been able to contact himtoday for an update.Again & without any restraint. Thank you ALL.Kind regards,John Vahey16

2012 Spring Rally - Adare

Sunday 15th April 2012 was a special day for T lovers. It marked the point in our

calendar of events where our members and their cars met for the first run of the newyear. During the winter owners had a chance toservice and make good any remedial mattersoverhanging from the previous busy season. And so it was, 21 cars foregathered at David &Marian’s garage at Adare Machinery formorning coffee and scones and a pre run chat.Off we went for a most pleasant drive taking inCroom, Kilmallock and Hospital where we trulyenjoyed in bright sunshine and blue skies thewonderful scenic country roads and lanes of

East Limerick. Our stop over for Sunday lunch was at Adare Golf Club, a splendidlocation where safe parking and majestic surrounds create the atmosphere for aleisurely get-together. Afterwards we travelled in and around Adare Village and itsimmediate hinterland arriving back at base by 5:00pm giving members a chance to load up and gethome before darkness. Our day was somewhat marred by an incident wherea new member on his first outing in a Model Tsuffered an axle failure. It transpires that in theprocess of rebuilding the car by the previous ownerhe acquired a period correct front axle presented asan original but proved to be a fake. The poor weld

Page 11: Spring 2012 Spring 2012 - Irish Model T Ford Clubirishmodeltclub.ie/files/2012/10/The-Irish-T-Times-Spring-2012.pdf · The Irish T. Times Spring 2012. Page 6. I would like my thoughts

was masked with body filler and paint and thus an amateur was easily hoodwinked. Theearly stub axels are one piece. In this case safety was compromised. Early car owners

should check to see that all is well on this front. Ourmember and his passenger were shaken by theepisode and thankfully escaped serious injury.Learning from our experience we are requesting allrally entrants to carry with them a visible vest, a fireextinguisher and a safety triangle with a request thatfor whatever reason they stop on the roadside thattheir presence is well marked beforehand. Secondly, all drivers are expected to obey our Marshalls’

instructions to the letter, no ifs and buts. Finally at the commencement of the rally adrivers’ briefing be held so as to make all participants aware of the rules of the Clubwhere courtesy to other road users and safety are paramount.
