ScholarshipsThe Salvation Army Kroc Center Scholarship Program The Salvation Army Kroc Center is pleased to provide a comprehensive

Income-Based Membership Plan to help provide access to this facility. It was

Joan Kroc's vision and expectation that all individuals have equal opportuni-

ties to develop and discover their natural gifts and talents. Scholarships are

25 percent, 50 percent or 75 percent off regular membership fees, requiring

people awarded a scholarship to pay at least a minimal fee. Scholarships

have been and will be awarded to families, seniors, single adults, and youth

who currently do not have the expendable income to cover the full cost of a

membership.

You may pick up a scholarship application at the front desk or print one off

our website at: http://www.gbkroccenter.org/membership/scholarships/.

When you have completely filled out the scholarship application, bring that

along with the required documents to the front desk. When this informa-

tion is returned, the Income-Based Membership Coordinator will determine

the eligibility of the scholarship and contact the applicant about his or her

scholarship status.

For more information, call 920-884-5007 and ask

for The Income-Based Membership Coordinator.

Kroc historyJoan Kroc’s VisionIn 1998, Mrs. Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc,

donated $90 million to The Salvation Army to build a comprehensive

community center in San Diego, California.

Her goal was to create a center, supported in part by the

community, where children and families would be exposed to

different people, activities, and arts that would otherwise be beyond

their reach. Completed in 2001, the center sits on 12 acres and offers an

ice arena, gymnasium, three pools, rock climbing walls, a performing arts

theatre, an Internet-based library, computer lab, and a school of visual and

performing arts.

When Mrs. Kroc passed away in october 2003, she left $1.5 billion —

much of her estate — to The Salvation Army. This is by far the largest

charitable gift ever given to the Army, and the largest single gift given to

any charity at one time. The initial disbursements of this bequest began

in January 2005.

The gift had by then grown to $1.8 billion and was split evenly among the

four Army Territories — Central, east, South, and West. The money was

designated to build a series of state-of-the-art Ray and Joan Kroc Corps

Community Centers nationwide patterned after the San Diego center.

From the very beginning, The Salvation Army envisioned this as a long-

term project — that it could take up to 10 to 15 years to have all of the

centers open and operational. No other U.S. charity, — faith-based or

otherwise, — has ever undertaken such a sweeping fund-raising or

construction effort with the potential to impact millions of people.

To date, 19 centers are now open and operating. An additional 8 centers

have opened in 2011 and beyond, for a total of 27 centers once the proj-

ect is complete.

Fit Facts

Here are the facts: The buoyancy of water reduces the “weight” of a person by about 90%, which means that the stress on weight-bearing joints, bones and muscles is similarly reduced. For this reason, it is unlikely that a water workout will result in injury or leave you with sore muscles. That’s why the pool is such a great place for people with arthritis or back problems to exercise. It is also great for those who are new to exercise. So try a water aerobics class at The Kroc!

Kroc Church is a group of people with a common purpose to follow and love Jesus. Being part of The Salvation Army Kroc Center allows us a number of different ways to build community through fellowship, worship, and study. No matter who you are or where you find yourself in life, if it is your desire to draw closer to Jesus, and if you want to be a part of an encouraging Christian community, we would love to have you join us.
