In today’s world, so much is about being young, fast and dynamic. Everyone wants to stay young, and if Nature isn‘t cooperating, we offer a helping hand with a rejuvenating cream, or even a slice or a needle jab here and there. the commercials, tV shows, magazine advertise-ments: so much of it targets or is designed by young people.But the fact is that Europe has an ageing population. Just look at my hair. My youngest daugh-ter nearly fell over laughing last week when she saw my wedding photo; I used to have nearly black hair.

In the world of Rivièra Maison, in contrast, it’s all about old – and the older, the better. I’m not talking about our sales staff here, or myself for that matter, but about our products, especially the wooden furniture. old (or rather, vintage) is sizzling hot right now, and not just in our line of work. You can’t buy a pair of jeans these days that isn’t full of tears, holes and unravelling edges. My mother, God rest her soul, would turn over in her grave if she could see the jeans I wear, let alone the trou-sers my son sjors wears every day - or how he wears them!Where clothing is generally about products made to look old, we have our furniture made from materials that are authentically old, and that’s a fantastic process.our Driftwood furniture have been a resounding success for several years; the tabletop in this series is made from the North American Elm, which was used at the beginning of last century to make front doors. We took those old front doors and had them converted into furniture. the old doors are collected locally, scrubbed clean and sanded down, and then sawed into the size of wood needed for the furniture. Untouched is what the factory calls it, and that’s exactly what it is: untreated and in its almost pristine original state. Where the hinges once entered the wood, there are now holes; where the doors were cracked, cracks still remain in the table-top, and a door that has always been battered by rain has a different colour than a door that usually stayed dry and/or caught the full force of the sun’s rays. Authentically nature, in other words – and unlike those jeans, this furniture is truly old, but made new again.

Now we’re constantly searching for innovations and other types of old wood; we’ve found old oak from the Us, for instance. It was once used to mark off the ranges where thousands of cows grazed, and to build barns on big ranches in texas.We used this weathered, aged texan oak to develop the shoreham tables that you’ll see later in this magazine; they’re rougher than the Driftwoods, but they have a lot of character. these are tables that have a story to tell. We gave the frame underneath the tabletop a Long Island look and feel by constructing it out of shutters. I think the end result is wonderful and will be distinctive in the market.on Java, we found old teakwood, between 60 and 100 years old, often still covered in the original paint. the old wood came from old houses and shops that were being demolished to make way for new buildings. once, this wood would have been worthless; these days it seems like it’s worth its weight in gold. We gave it a new lease on life in the Clarckson Bay series. We left small pieces of the painted old planks completely intact and made a sort of mosaic of old wood in muted coloured, inset in the tabletop.

We develop our collections at least a year before a product ends up in the store. It starts with an idea, followed by a sketch, then a working draught, then a technical calculation by the manufacturer (is this feasible?); only then is the first sample made. then comes a round of comments and criticism based on the first photos, and then we go see it live. that first con-frontation with your new product feels a little like a first date with the woman of your dreams. At times like that, I’m fairly tense and nervous, but I can also be incredibly infuriated if it turns out not to be what you expected after all. that means that it has to be changed, or even that we have to go back to the drawing board and start over. But when a new product has made it through all of that, like the examples I mentioned above, it’s an incredible kick, like watching something we created together be born.I’m happy and proud.

NICO’S STYLING TIPS I 13

As I write, a thick, chilly mist is descending on the Netherlands, but looking at the photos in the magazine instantly makes me long for summer. These pages offer a few tips for bringing that wonderfully summery feeling into your house. Once I get started, I can hardly stop; some-times I even swap the carpet for a robust sisal mat. And I change the lampshades from dark brown to white. Fantastic! Summer is welcome to start anytime, as far as I’m concerned.Another fun tidbit: I’ve been very busy working on the Be Inspired cookbook: chock-full of delicious recipes. I’ve spent weeks on the photography for that project, and I absolutely loved it. The recipes were so tasty that I sometimes went straight home to try them myself. So wonderful to see all those chefs working so passionately; it was very inspiring. Especially fun for me: I not only got to taste all the dishes, but I also had the chance to decorate all the plates beautifully. Double fun! The book will be launched in spring, so keep a close eye on our website.

hold the bell jar upside-down and fill it with layers of seashells. Then put the base

back on and turn it over again. Done! Don’t do another thing to it.

Seashells always put me in the mood for summer. I stretched a piece of linen

across the top of this jar and tied it with an old rope for a nice effect.

Tip 6I’m sometimes teasingly referred to as the king of

beargrass. When I put a bundle of this long grass in a vase, it’s instant summer in your home: it smells nice

and fresh, and stays good for a long time. Tip: if you add a few drops of bleach to the water, the grass bouquet will stay

The quality tailor pots are my favourites, because they’re so fun to use. I regularly put nice plants in them; in spring I like to watch the bulbs grow. how did you meet? Herald: ,,Carlo was presenting a show called soapTalent. I was still in theatre school then, with big dreams of acting, and I ended up on his show! We ran into each other occasi-onally after that and there was always a kind of exciting tension, but it didn’t develop fully until about four years ago.’’ Carlo: ,,We were talking on the phone for something work-related, and then I said: shouldn’t we go out for ice cream together sometime?’’

who is herald to you, Carlo? ,,My love, my home – and I didn’t think home was important at all before Herald. I bought this house for the peace and quiet and the space, but it wasn’t my style at all. Living here is fantastic, but Amsterdam will always be a place that we want to live someday. We’ll stay here until then, and we decided that if we were staying, we should make it more fun. et voilà!’’

so there have been a lot of Changes in this house sinCe herald moved in? Carlo: ,,What hasn’t changed? I think that every single power socket has been moved.’’

Is Carlo the same man at home as the man we see on tv? Herald: ,,no, he is himself on television, but when the cameras are rolling, he’s an entertainer. At home, he comes to rest and is a sweet, affectionate partner.’’

do you often have people over for a ‘dinner with friends’? Herald: ,,Carlo spends a lot of time working; if we’re not careful, we work 24 hours a day. I slow him down there a bit, because I enjoy cooking for friends. We really have the kitchen for it now, too, and I designed it all myself! Carlo doesn’t initiate dinner parties like that, but after dinner he always says we should do it more often.’’

what is your favourite plaCe in the house? Carlo: ,,That would be the bedroom and the bathroom. You can create something there where you find peace, where you can relax in the bath after a hard day’s work. That’s where we started renovating.” Herald: ,,We work long hours. sometimes we don’t get home until ten p.m. If it’s that late, we don’t watch TV on the sofa anymore; we watch upstairs in bed. ’’ >

Carlo boszhard (42) and his boyfriend herald adolfs (35) are Crazy about

amsterdam and would like to live there again someday; they felt like they

were living in the middle of life there. now they’re happy in a quiet village

in the shadow of the Capital City, where they Can relax and unwind after a

long, busy day at work.

about Carlo and heraldCarlo Boszhard (1969) is, as he puts it, an enter-tainer. He’s worked in every aspect of television along the way. Hosting shows, doing imitations, musicals, voice acting for cartoon characters. He signed a four-year contract with RTL in december 2011. The new contract runs until 2016, which means that the 25th anniversary is coming up. Herald Adolfs (1976) spent three years working at sBs show news before switching to Masmedia. When they were discus-sing the interior, it was clear fairly soon that Carlo and Herald loved flair and atmosphere – which explains the chair (which Queen Beatrix always sat in) from an old theatre where Herald acted in plays with the local theatrical society. Trophies and mementos from previous productions can add that extra highlight. These elements are always important when decorating a home; no one wants to sit back and relax in an exhibition hall. What do you thiNk of RivièRa maisoN? aNd What is youR favouRite pRoduct?Carlo: ,,We really loved it pretty quickly, and that was not due in any way to the décor on the set of Life4You. We especially love the La Cucina Pot, the white linen Keith dining Wing Chairs and the sevilla Coffee Tables. It’s just an incredible brand.’’ Herald: ,,It’s the atmosphere that it exudes. It has this warm, cosy feeling that appeals to us.’’ Carlo: ,,It works well in our interior because we have lots of salvaged pallet wood, that rough wood that’s not perfectly finished, and a lot of your furniture has that too.’’

caRLo, do you feeL moRe Like a musicaL staR, a tv host oR aN imitatoR?,,I’m an entertainer. There’s not a lot left that I haven’t tried yet and still really want to, but what I do, I want to do well – and to keep it that way. ‘de TV Kantine’, for instance, that’s really my child, my outlet.’’

you say that you’Re aN eNteRtaiNeR. is theRe somethiNg that you WouLd RatheR Not have doNe? ,,no, one thing leads to another. ‘de TV Kantine’ has opened new doors; it led to ‘Zie Ze Vliegen’. And Life4You, which is one of the most unique shows on dutch TV, because it’s already been running for twelve years. That’s because it creates a sense of warm, friendly cosiness, just like Rivièra Maison. Lots of people enjoy that, just as Irene and I do; it will always be an important show to us.’’

What shoW is the most fuN you’ve eveR had hostiNg oR WoRkiNg oN? ,,I absolutely adore working on ‘de TV Kantine’ with Herald. It’s totally my thing, in every way. I get to decide what I’m willing to and going to do, from A to Z. Almost no one has that luxury in the TV world.’’

aRe theRe stiLL NeW pRojects oN the sLate foR this summeR?Herald: ,,someone asked us a while ago whether we’d ever thought about making TV Kantine: The Movie. since then, that idea has been rolling around in our minds. It would be really great.’’ Carlo: ,,We would really like to make it ourselves, so if the time comes that we do that, I want to be able to really throw myself into it completely.’’ Herald: ,,We come up with the material for ‘de TV Kantine’ with the two of us, and then get to work with a small group of people. We’d like to write the script ourselves; there would have to be enough time for that.’’ <

the RM Magazine summer 2012 will tell all about the new collection and its main theme: ‘Lake House’. the inspiration for this issue is a holiday with family and friends in a cot-tage by one of the big lakes in the american state of Georgia. everyone was carefree, enjoying the free time and the time spent together in the gorgeous and untouched natural setting: cruising in a speedboat, fishing from the dock, hiking through the mountains or just relaxing in the charming holiday cot-tage. this carefree atmosphere is expressed in a robust mix & match collection. Materials and colours are combined playfully. the innovative shapes bring this theme fully to life. We can hardly wait for summer to come again and are already making plans to enjoy the summer season to the fullest.

The annual presentation ceremony of the Beau Monde Awards took place in the Amstel Hotel last winter. Rivièra Maison had received two admission tickets to give away. There

was clearly a great deal of interest in the tickets, considering how many registrations were submit-ted via the stores! The lucky winner of the ticket raffle was Monica from Amstelveen. She and a friend had the privilege of walking down the red carpet, and then being part of this glamour party

surrounded by all the Dutch celebrities. Many awards were presented that evening. Wendy van Dijk won the award for the most beautiful Beau Monde cover model, Liz Snoijink won the award for the most successful make-over, Liza Sips won the Leco award, and Anouk Smulders was elected the most stylish glamour girl.
