ThisstudywillbebasedonBeaumontNewhall’s“TheHistoryofPhotography,”andexploretopicsandquestionsposedbythestudentsintheseminarinthefirstfewweeksoftheterm.Wewilllookatthearthistoryofphotographyaswellasotherhistories,particularlythoseapproachesthathaveemergedsinceNewhallfirstwroteonthesubject.

Aspartoftheseminar,studentswillparticipateindiscussion,learntoanalyzespecificphotographsoftheirchoice,explorethetopicsandquestionsagreedonbythegroup,anddevelopandpresentafinalprojecttothegroup.Allofthelearningactivitiescoveredbytheseminarwillbeconductedonline,inagroupspaceinANGEL(thecollege’slearningmanagementsystem).

Thisisa4-credit,advanced-levelstudythatfulfillsthegeneraleducationrequirementinTheArts.Whiletherearenospecific

Thisexcitingthree-daylearningopportunitywillbeheldatthecollege’sMetropolitanCenter,March18-20,2011.TheresidencyislinkedtoninecoursesofferedintheSpring2011termthatfocusininterdisciplinarywaysonurbanenvironmentalissues:EnvironmentandJustice;ATaleofThreeCities:VisionsoftheCityinU.S.History,ArtandCulture;UrbanEcosystems;UrbanChildDevelopment;NewYorkCity:GreenEconomyandGreenJobs;PollutionControlandPreventionforNewYorkCity;SeaLevelRising:PerformingtheFutureCity;NewYorkCityandtheUrbanEnvironment;andGreeningGotham:CultureChangeinFactandFiction.Eachofthesecoursessatisfiesoneormoregeneraleducationrequirement.

Forthe2010-2011academicyearstudentsareinvitedtoparticipateinanewonlinelearningenvironment,theProjectforOnlineOpenLearning(POOL).ThinkoftheProjectforOnlineOpenLearningasacombinationofablog,aFacebookpageandavirtuallecturehall.Itisdesignedtocapturethelearningthatgoesonwhenintelligentpeoplepassionatelydiscusstopicsofgreatpersonalinterest.

Inatraditionalclassorgroupstudystudentsarecloselytiedtopredeterminedcontent,predeterminedcredits,prescheduledstartandenddates,andalimitednumberofpeers.IntheProjectforOnlineOpenLearning,youareencouragedtofollowyourlearningwhereveritleads,andyouareencouragedtoexchangeideas,information,criticismandanalysiswithotherstudentsandfacultyinthecommunityspace.Itisnotastructuredonlinecourse;ratheritisasocial,networked,learningenvironment.Ifyouhaveaninterestinaspecifictopic,ratherthanaspecificcourse,thenthePOOLmightbeperfectforyou(especiallythe“ConnectedLearning”groupdescribedbelow).

What is Different About the Project for Online Open Learning?Unliketraditionalcoursesthatmayhavepredefinedcontentandassignments,theProjectforOnlineOpenLearningisbuiltaroundtheideathatlearningshouldnotberestrainedbyanythingotherthanwhatyou,workingcloselywithyourmentor,wanttolearnabout.Inmanycasesitisnotclearinadvanceexactlywhatwillinterestastudentaboutaparticularcourseortopic.ThePOOLisdesignedtoevolvealongwithyourinterestsandlearningneeds.

Thisisanewwayofteachingandlearning–thistypeofonlineenvironmentisnewtothecollegeandtohighereducationingeneral–anditislikelythatsuccessfulstudentswillbeintellectuallycurious,motivatedtolearn,self-startersandwillingtoengageinalearningcommunitythatisnotsimplyacopyoftraditionalcoursestructures.ThePOOLisopenandthatmeansthatyouhavetobecuriousenoughtoaskquestionsandresponsibleenoughtoworktowardsfindinganswers.MembersoftheEmpireStateCollegefacultywillleadprojectsandbeavailabletoguideyouandyourpeersthroughthelearningprocess.

Thisisaneasyenvironmenttonavigate.The“frontpage”oftheProjectforOnlineOpenLearningwillshowwherecurrentconversationsareactiveanditwillpointyoutoimportantacademicresourcesthatarerelevanttotheseconversations.

What Learning Projects are Planned?Individualprojectsplannedforthe2010-2011academicyearincludethefollowing:

• Connected Learning .Thisgroupstudywillintroducestudentstolearningtheoriesdrivenbythedevelopmentofnewmediaandsocialnetworkingtools.Eachstudentwillbeexpectedtotakeanactiveroleindevelopingconnectedlearningstrategies

andpracticesthatareapplicabletotheirownstudies,interestsandacademicgoals.Studentsalsowillbeexpectedtoidentifyinthefirstweekofthestudyspecifictopicsthattheyplantoinvestigate.Thisstudyisopentostudentsfromanydisciplinarybackgroundandisinitiallyofferedasa2credit,introductorylevelfoundationoption.However,studentswillbegiventheoptiontoexpandthecreditlevelasspecificlearninginterestsandopportunitiesarise.Thisstudycanbestructuredtocountaseducationalplanningcredits,thoughstudentsmustconsultwiththeirprimarymentorstoseeifeducationalplanningcreditisappropriate.Therewillbenorequiredtextbooksattheoutsetofthisclass,thoughstudentsmayberequiredtopurchaseasingletextascommonlearninginterests.Inanyevent,thetextbookcosts,ifthereareany,willbeheldtounder$30.(PotentialstudentswantingtolearnmoreaboutthebasicsofthecoursecandoaWebsearchfor“connectivism”togetasenseofwhatwewillbedoing.)StudentsmustregisterforConnectedLearningasanindependentstudy.PleasecontactFrankVanderValkformoreinformation.

• Comparative Political Theory .ThiswillbeacustomizableversionofthecourseofferedthroughtheCenterforDistanceLearning.Studentsandfacultywillengageinthestudyofthepoliticaltheoriesofvariousintellectualtraditions.ForadescriptionofthebasicversionofthelearningprojectpleaseconsulttheComparativePoliticalTheorycoursedescriptioninthistermguide.

• Modern Political Theory .ThiswillbeacustomizableversionofthecourseofferedthroughtheCenterforDistanceLearning.ForadescriptionofthebasicversionofthelearningprojectpleaseconsulttheModernPoliticalTheorycoursedescriptioninthistermguide.

• Water .Waterislife.Withoutit,nothinggrows.Freshwaterisinjeopardy.Whattododependsonwho’stalking.It’sasacredtrust,orachemistryproblem.It’sourpatrioticright,orapoliticalpawn.It’sahumanright,or“bluegold,”thelatestcorporatefrontier.

What about Credits?StudiesintheProjectforOnlineOpenLearningaredesignedtobeopen-endedintermsofcontent,creditsandtimeframes.Youmightsignupforanindependentstudyfor4credits,oryoumightjustdiveintothelearninganddecidethat6creditsworthoflearningsuitsyoubest.Youmighttakesmall“chunks”ofcredits2atatime,tailoringindependentlearningcontractsalongtheway.Youcanarrangeforacertainnumberofcreditsbeforeyoubegin,oryoucanstartparticipatingandthenworkwithyourmentorandPOOLfacultytoarrangeforanumberofcreditsthatmakessensetoyou.
