“Never yet was a springtime, when the buds forgot to bloom.”

~Margaret Elizabeth Sangster~

It always amazes me how quickly the end of the school year is upon us. Just when we think winter will never end, we begin to be able to feel the warmth in the sunshine. Looking back at what our students, staff, parents, and BOE members have accomplished this year, already it is evident that BMC continually “blooms”, creating new opportunities for our children. Here are some of the accomplishments/activities this year for all of us to be proud of:

FFA’s 1st Annual Pancake Breakfast Musical Arbor Day festivities Artwork accepted into the Juried Art Exhibition at the Lake Placid Center for Arts Speech/Debate Team State Bids Bucketfilling Activities New Webpage with e-mail links and school activities listed Junior Honor Society (18 new members) & National Honor Society Induction (16) Numerous Scholarships awarded to seniors 2 Read-a-longs Excel Project Concerts Athletic competitions Academic competitions Staff and community members serving on committees for the benefit of students Mini grants awarded to teachers Booster Club Donations Class/Club Fundraisers

With the difficult task of balancing the needs of our school with the needs of the community during the budget development, the District, again this year, has continued with a budget committee that is comprised of staff, BOE members and community members. We continue to carefully consider the programmatic needs as they relate to improving student achievement, as well as the overall needs of the students as we work to provide a solid program that educates the whole child and prepares each of our students for the future. We continue to strive for excellence by encouraging parents to become more involved with the school in offering their input on the important decisions we are faced with. For such a small school district, we do an extraordinary job of providing outstanding opportunities for our students. As we all are facing the obstacles of the economic turmoil of New York State, I am reminded of a quote from Michael Jordan: “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” With your continued support we will figure out a way to get around the economic wall, so our students do not lose any of the wonderful opportunities BMC provides them with. Everyone is working together to come up with creative cost saving ideas. Thank you for your dedication to our school and for the many opportunities our students have that would not be possible without your involvement.

Robin Jones, Superintendent

High School News

Things here at Brushton-Moira High School are going very well! It is hard to believe that spring is here. Soon the end of the school year will be upon us. This is a good time to check your children’s academic progress. Carefully read all of the correspondence that comes home from school. The report cards and progress reports contain important information about your child’s progress. You may also receive mailings from teachers and other district personnel.

As the weather begins to get warmer we put our winter clothes away and get out our spring and summer outfits. This is an appropriate time to remind your children about the Brushton-Moira Central Dress Code. This code can be found in your child’s Student Agenda and is available in the High School Office. The dress code is designed to reduce distractions that might disrupt the educational process. Some of the high-lights are: Garments such as tube tops, net tops, halter tops, spaghetti straps, plunging neck lines (front and back), see-through garments, muscle shirts and sleeveless undershirts are not allowed. Underwear must be completely covered at all times. Footwear must be worn at all times. Midriffs must be covered at all times. If anyone has any questions about the Dress Code please feel free to contact me.

We have several events that will occur between now and the end of the year:

*April 5th: No School – Unused Snow Day *April 12 – 21: Spring Break (The School Board approved April 19th and 20th as days off due to unused snow days) *May 14th: Spring Follies *May 18th: Annual Budget Vote *May 22nd: Junior Prom *May 28th-31st: No School, Memorial Day Observance (May 28 Approved by the School Board as a day off due to unused snow days). *June 10th-14th: Final Exams *June 15-24th: New York State Regents Exams *June 25th: Graduation We are looking forward to a successful end to the school year. One of the keys to your child’s progress is communication. Please let us know if you have any concerns or problems concerning your child. Have a great spring!! Steven Grenville Secondary Principal

MIDDLE LEVEL NEWS

In December, many of our middle level teachers joined together to plan the Middle Level Mini Olympics. It was a spirit filled morning with students competing by grade level in the gym doing Three-Legged Races, Spiderman Scooter Relay, and Basketball Shoot-A-Rama to name a few. The students’ ticket into the Mini Olympics was a canned or boxed good for donation to the local food pantry. We collected many boxes of donated canned goods for our community. Thanks goes out to everyone who helped to make this event successful. The Middle Level Student Council, under the direction of Mrs. Lynch, has been busy organizing fundraisers and activities for grades 5-8. In January there was a 7th and 8th Grade Game Night and in February we held a 7th and 8th Grade SADD Dance. There will be other dates during the spring for Grades 5 and 6 to participate in a Game Night, as well as other events. Students should listen to the announcements to find out when they will be held. Mr. Pietropaoli and Mr. Fowler, co-advisors for National Junior Honor Society, organized an induction ceremony on March 9, 2010. NJHS students must maintain a 90 average and exhibit the characteristics of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship. Eighteen new 7th grade members were inducted this year: Ashley Debeer, Paige Debeer, Devin Delisle, Cherise Deshane, Jesse Feiman, Arielle Gary, Kurtis Helm, Jocelyn Martin, Meagan Martin, Micaela McCarthy, Nathan Niles, Tyler Nimz, Katelyn Pierce, Cortney Rudolph, Erika Russell, McKenzie Traynor, Victoria Vaughn, ShianneYeddo. In addition to Robin Jones, Superintendent, and Valerie Dunning, Board of Education member, we were pleased to have a high school BMC National Honor Society student, Benjamin Martin, speak at the ceremony and give congratulatory remarks. Congratulations to all of our new inductees! Our language teachers, Mrs. Botto, Mrs. Daniels and Ms. Marrama, held a LOTE Night for Languages Other Than English. Students had an opportunity to show off their speaking skills while singing or doing skits. It was a very entertaining evening, even if you didn’t know Spanish or French! Other upcoming events include the Science Fair, Entrepreneurship Fair, Spring Concert, 8th Grade Celebration and Awards Night. I would like to thank all of the parents who attended the Parent/Teacher Conferences. We tried a new format in March by inviting parents to come in for scheduled appointments with teachers instead of just walk-ins. The response from parents was overwhelmingly positive—the majority of parents were able to come for their scheduled times and, based on a survey that night, they preferred the scheduled appointments. Thanks for making this a successful event so we can work together to help all of our students be successful! As spring approaches, so does our New York State testing for grades 3-8! This year is unique because the State has scheduled all the NYS tests in ELA, mathematics, science and social studies between the end of April and June. Our teachers have already begun to focus on preparing students for the upcoming tests and we will need your help to make sure your child is in school on the test dates and ready to be tested. Below you will find all of the spring test dates, as well as other dates you will want to be aware of to help your child plan for the end of the year. Important Dates: April 22 Science Fair (Grades 6-8) June 14 & 15 NYS Grade 8 Social Studies Test April 26 NYS ELA Tests for Grades 5 & 6 June 15 Last Day of School: 8th Grade (1/2 day) April 27 NYS ELA Tests for Grades 5-8 June 15-23 Regents Exams April 28 NYS ELA Tests for Grades 6, 7, 8 June 21 NYS Second Language Proficiency May 5 & 6 NYS Math Tests for Grades 5-8 Exam (Grade 8 French and Spanish) May 18 7th Grade Entrepreneurship Fair June 24 Last Day of School for UPK - Grade 6

May 24 NYS Grade 8 Practice for Sci. Perf. Test May 25 NYS Grade 8 Science Performance Test June 7 NYS Grade 8 Science Written Test Please make every effort to have your child come to school on time on test days. Students who do not come to school will have to take a make-up test. Students do best when they take these tests on scheduled test days with their peers. It is much harder for them to focus and students tend not to score as well when they have to take portions of the test as a make-up at a later date. This is particularly important for the 8th grade social studies test, as it is on the last two days of school in June. Students who do not come in for the regularly scheduled dates will be required to come to school during Regents week to make up the test. We want to see students do their best on this test so we can accurately determine if your child is academically progressing on grade level or if your child may need extra help. The earlier we know this information, the more quickly we can provide appropriate Academic Intervention Services (AIS) to help your child. As a district, it is also important for students to score well on these tests because it determines how our school is rated on the school report card each year. Tips to help your child get ready to take state tests:

1) Have your child go to bed early on the nights before each test to get a good night’s rest. 2) Have your child eat breakfast in the morning. 3) Your child needs to be in school on time each test day. 4) Your child should bring a couple of #2 pencils to school each day. 5) Encourage your child to relax. 6) Remind your child to take each question one at a time. 7) Have your child bring water to drink during the test.

Dear Parent: In September 2006, changes in Education Law were implemented in regard to physical examinations for school children. Students in PreK, Kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, 7th, and 10th grade, as well as new entrants, are required to have a physical examination. Our school health care provider conducts these physicals over the course of the school year. You may choose, however, to have your family physician or pediatrician complete your child’s physical exam (please note that the exam will be acceptable only if it was completed within 12 months prior to school entrance and if the doctor’s health certificate for new entrants is returned to the nurses’ office within 30 days of starting school at BMC). For students in grades 2, 4, 7, and 10, a completed and signed physical must be returned to the nurse before the scheduled exam for your child to be exempt from the school physical. If the completed form is not returned, the school physician will then do the routine physical examination. As part of the required school health examination, a student is weighed and his/her height is measured. These numbers are used to figure the student’s body mass index or ‘BMI’. The BMI helps the doctor or nurse know if the student’s weight is in a healthy range or if it is too high or low. Recent changes to the New York State Education Law require that BMI and weight status group be included as part of the student’s school health examination. Furthermore, a sample of school districts will be selected to be part of the survey, we will be reporting to New York State Department of Health information about our students’ weight status groups. Only summary information is sent. No names or information about individual students will be submitted. However, you may choose to have your child’s information excluded from this survey report. After September 1, 2008, when we require that you child have a physical examination, we will be requesting a dental certificate as well. There is a certificate available for you to take to child’s dentist and once it is completed, it should be returned to the School Nurse as it will be filed in your child’s Cumulative Health Record. Thank you for your cooperation in this new health endeavor. Our students benefit when we work together to promote the health and achievement of all students. Please call the school’s Health Office if you have any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Connie Terry, RN Brenda Russell, LPN School Nurse School Nurse

State Medication Regulations

Sincere concern has been expressed on the part of several parents about the regulations regarding the administration of medications to students during school hours, the regulations are again being supplied to parents and students. These regulations are NOT a local school district policy; they are in accordance with the New York State Education Department and hereafter, NO EXCEPTIONS to these rules will be made. Each student requiring medication for any reason during school hours must have a written request form signed by BOTH the family physician and parent on file in the nurses’ office. Each medication should go on a separate form and a new request form must be completed each time the medication is renewed or a new one is started. No medication (prescription or over-the-counter) will be administered without this written permission form on file. All medication should be delivered to the nurses’ office by the parent and MUST be in the prescription bottle or the manufacturer’s original container. Students are again reminded that all medication is to be kept in the nurse’s office, and that under no circumstances should a student take medication without supervision. The medication release forms are available at the school nurses’ office and at some of the local physician’s offices. Parents are discouraged from sending medications to school that can be administered at home. Caution should be used when sending “as needed” medications. Your cooperation and understanding will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. ***********************************************************************************

As part of the new “No Child Left Behind” legislation, parents of each student attending a Title I School may request information regarding the professional qualifications of their child’s classroom teacher. The same regulation applies to a teaching assistant that may be assigned to your child’s classroom. If you request this information in writing, the district will respond to you in writing within ten school days. The information will be provided in an understandable and uniform format, in a language you can understand. The response will include the following information:

1. whether the teacher has met State qualifications and licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction;

2. whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which State qualification or licensing criteria have been waived;

3. the baccalaureate degree major of the teacher and any other graduate certification or degree held by the teacher, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree; and,

4. whether the child is provided services by teaching assistants and, if so, their qualifications. The district makes every effort to ensure that all teachers and teaching assistants are highly qualified. Sincerely, Building Principal ***********************************************************************************

You should also have the names and dates of any disease, operations, injuries, treatments, etc. your child has had.

• If you are requesting an exception from immunizing your child due to religious beliefs please obtain a religious exemption form from our elementary principal or school nurse. The completed request will then be reviewed and will be either approved or denied by the district.

• If you are requesting an exemption from immunizing your child due to medical reasons please submit a signed and dated statement from your physician.

In accordance with Chapter 53 of the laws of 1980, the BMCS District is required to screen all new entrants to determine which pupils are or may be handicapped or gifted. When registering your child this March 26th or 27th a screening appointment will be made. The screening will take place on Thursday, May 20th or Friday, May 21st. STEWART’S DONATION

Brushton-Moira Central School has some exciting news. We applied for a donation for our Extended Day Program. We received $400 from Stewarts Holiday Match Program. Stewarts collects money from customers during Thanksgiving to Christmas. Stewart’s then matches what the customers give. We are busy finding items that the students can use. We would like to thank Stewarts for this money, and all the customers that threw their spare change in the collection bucket.

2010 Brushton-Moira Summer Basketball Camp

The Brushton-Moira Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball programs would like to invite you to our annual summer camp. This year the camp will be directed by our two varsity coaches. Our goal will be to

stress skill building and team concepts while keeping the experience positive and fun.

FACILITIES: The camp will utilize all three of our gyms. This provides us with an enormous amount of space to provide the best experience possible.

FEE: The cost for the 5 days will be $60. This fee includes a camp shirt. A non-refundable deposit of

$20 is required by June 15th. The balance needs to be paid in full by the first day of camp. DATES & TIMES: The camp will run from Monday, July 26 through Friday, July 30. The camp will

begin at 9:00 AM each day and end at 2:00 PM. The main gym will be open at 8:30 for campers who would like extra shooting or instruction.

PARTICIPANTS: Boys and Girls entering grades 3 – 12. Everyone will be at camp at the same time,

although campers will be separated based on age and skill level. This camp is open to athletes from any of the area school districts as well as Brushton-Moira student athletes.

STAFF: The camp will be directed by our program’s head coaches, Mr. Sam Dumont and Mr. Randy

Todd. Accompanying these two will be a plethora of other coaches from other levels of our programs, as well as from surrounding school districts. We plan on having a player to coach ratio of better than 8 to 1.

LUNCH: Campers will be responsible for their own lunch. A half hour lunch break will be provided.

Sports drinks and healthy snacks will be on sale during camp hours.

Meet the Team of BMC Cafeteria:

I would like to take a moment to send a special thank you to all my staff. They are the ones who work so hard every day to prepare the meals for your children. The day starts with Dale Allen doing all the heavy lifting. It then moves on to Lyn Martin, Sue Brown, and Barbara McCarthy taking care of the breakfast program. When this is complete, they help with lunch. Connie Ghostlaw starts her day preparing the lunch and moves onto serving breakfast. The fine cooking skills come from Brenda Dabiew and Sue Winters. Patsy Blair and Robin Elliott come in to put the finishing touches on tasks for lunch. Soon after, Penny Deno comes to wash the dishes and finish preparation.

Also, there are always the people behind the scenes that help with the program. Thank you also goes to Angela DeBeer and her team and to the Board of Education. I also thank Robin Jones as she is a supportive boss, to me and to the program. Without the hard work and dedication of all of these people, our program would not be what it is today. As I close, I would like to send a special thank you to all the parents, students and staff who patronize the cafeteria. Sincerely, Mary E. McKane School Lunch Manager ***********************************************************************************
