Although the Minnesota International Center is a grassroots community organization, we still play a role on the national and international stage everyday, as evidenced by the recent visit to

Minnesota of Pakistani parliamentarians. At a time when U.S.-Pakistani relations are so important, MIC was able to afford them access to top political leaders in our State as well as the opportunity to meet with everyday Minnesotans eager to know more about their country. MIC’s reach is further extended by our work with our strategic local, national and international partners, including the U.S. Department of State, the National

Council for International Visitors, foreign governments, Minnesota’s K-12 schools, our 42 corporate members, the Minnesota Trade Office, the University of Minnesota, and so many of our fellow nonprofits and other educational institutions. Our work with our partners raises the international profile of our community as well as enabling us to reach out and open doors of international friendship. Collaboration also helps us run excellent programs while moderating our expenses; a necessity in this challenging economic climate. Now our largest fundraiser of the year is fast approaching. This year’s Celebration of Malaysia will highlight yet another country, while providing a wonderful party for attendees. The gala provides 15% of our revenue for the year and there are several

ways in which you can participate:• by being a patron or underwriter; • by donating an item for our silent or

live auction; • by purchasing tickets to attend or, if

unable to attend, still supporting the event

Thank you for your support of MIC and all you do to raise the global mindset in our state.

U.S. – Japanese Relations On Monday, May 10, MIC will host a luncheon forum with His Excellency Ichiro Fujisaki, Japanese ambassador to the U.S. When the economic crisis went global, Japan, like the U.S., was hit particularly hard. In times of peril, however, there are opportunities for new partnerships, and the U.S. and Japan are forging unprecedented alliances. Japan’s prime minister was the first foreign leader to visit the new U.S. president in office, and the two nations are embarking on a joint effort to stem global and regional woes. Ambassador Fujisaki details what lies ahead for the Japan-U.S. relationship as the world enters a new and uncertain era. A native of Kagoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan, Ichiro Fujisaki became Ambassador of Japan to the U.S. on June 4, 2008. Fujisaki joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1969, and worked as a political minister at the Japanese embassy in Washington. From 1999 to 2002, he served as the director-general of the North American Affairs Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Academic WorldQuestOn Friday, January 22, MIC hosted its third annual Academic WorldQuest competition for Minnesota high school students. 28 teams from around the metro area participated in the competition which tested their knowledge of world flags and capitals, world geography and current events. Congratulations to the winning team: Southwest Minneapolis #1. As the winners of Academic WorldQuest 2010, their trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the national competition on April 24 will be sponsored by MIC. A thank you to all our sponsors and prize donors who helped make the competition successful.

General Mills WorldQuest The contest was a huge success! We had 32 teams, with five more on the waiting list. It was a happy hour event from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. The timing worked perfectly, as did the entire event. Although this was the first time for WorldQuest at General Mills, people got into the competitive spirit very quickly. It was a great way to bring a global focus into the company; a good team-building event; and simply a ton of fun. People raved about it in the survey we conducted afterwards. I believe we’ll be doing this again at General Mills.

WorldQuest in DuluthIn February, MIC partnered with the Alworth Institute of International Studies at University of Minnesota-Duluth to present the 2nd Annual Duluth WorldQuest. 18 teams who were composed of university faculty, students and community members from the Duluth area competed against each other in the spirit of fun and international cooperation to answer questions about current events, world flags and capitals. Many terrific door prizes were given away, and the first and second place teams were awarded $100 and $50, respectively, to be donated to an international charity of their choice.

Welcome to Our New Friends On a cold winter day they came from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) on a small island in southern Japan called Kyushu. There they were … bright-eyed and overwhelmed, eleven bundled-up Japanese students, exploring the campus at the University of Minnesota. It was the start of a six week adventure in a second language. The APU student’s classroom goals are to learn how to be more fluent in English and to master American culture. Of course, it’s not all classroom study. They also have very busy experiential learning off-campus with weekly field trips. From live music in Calhoun Square, to the State Capitol; from joining a volunteer group packing food for Haiti to climbing into snow tubes and throwing themselves down our snow covered Minnesotan hills. The APU program started four years ago and has been sending groups of students to the University of Minnesota for intensive English and cultural immersion programs every year. The Minnesota International Center arranged homestay for these students with MIC members for the duration of their visit. MIC will be arranging other shorter homestays this summer. For more details, contact Carol at [email protected] or 612.625.9618.

Pakistani International VisitorsMIC recently hosted four parliamentarians from Pakistan visiting the U.S. to discuss “Young Political Leaders and the U.S. Policy-Making Process”. This high profile delegation was accompanied by Ms. Alma Candelaria, director of the International Visitor Leadership Program. While in Minnesota they met with Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher at the State Capitol and observed a session on the House floor. Governor Tim Pawlenty also discussed future relationships between Pakistan and the U.S. At the Minnesota Supreme Court, Justice Paul Anderson and Chief Justice Eric Magnuson gave an overview of the Supreme Court system and presented the group with a Native American Pipestone-carved peace pipe “as a symbol of continued friendship and peace between our two nations.” The delegation also observed a U.S. Politics and Policy class taught by former Vice-President Walter Mondale and Professor Larry Jacobs at the Humphrey Institute. At the end of their visit, the delegation said that they were greatly honored to have met such distinguished leaders and said, “they had met true Americans, and they were from Minnesota.” The National Council for International Visitors (NCIV) is funded by the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State under the authority of the Fulbright-Hayes Act.

Behind the Scenes

MIC invites members to a reception with eight emerging global leaders who will be visiting the Twin Cities under the auspices of the State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program. These English-speaking women are lawyers, members of parliament, directors of NGOs and university-level professionals,

who are here to discuss “Women and the Law: The U.S. Experience”. They are from Ethiopia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa and Togo. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the “power of the personal” by meeting and sharing international dialogue with these African leaders.
