We are ramping up for the TROUT SHOW. We will again be hosted by the Valley Forge Middle School on Walker Road in Wayne. The day is Thursday, March 29, 2012 and the doors open at 7:00 pm. All of us that put together the show look for-ward to seeing you there. It will be another fabulous night of great raffle prizes – the greatest variety you will find anywhere – and a really terrific presentation by Dave Hughes. For those of you that don’t recognize his name he is a fisherman/author. I think he even titles himself that way - fisherman first and then author second to pay the bills. He is a prolific author

with more than 20 books to his credit and lots of fishing articles in periodi-cals. Anyone that I have talked to that has seen him before says his programs are not to be missed.

Topping the main raffle this year is a truly magnificent rod. with his exclusive ties – at least 150 flies in an Orvis box. There is a Ross Evolution LT fly reel for 2-4 weight line and a Weber Q 120 gas gill that is per-fect for portable barbequing and tailgating. Round-ing out the special raffle is a Simms Headwaters tackle bag.

As great as the main raffle is, I am feeling that we are a bit behind in donations for the Special Raffle and Bucket Raffle. We have a good start to where we need to be but we can always use a donation from you. It is really your donations and those of the very generous shops that adver-tize in BANKNOTES that make the TROUT SHOW a success. Of course we are always looking for volunteers to help with the evenings activities such as setup, selling raffle ticket, general assistance and taking down the show at the end of the evening. If you wish to volunteer please con-tact me be email or phone – my con-tact info is inside the back cover. It would also be very helpful to us if you are donating prizes that you let me know of your intention prior to the TROUT SHOW so we can recog-nize you on the program. Please, also list the prizes and their retail value on a 3 X 5 card with your name and give that to me when you give me your prizes. That is a great help. It will ensure that you are rec-ognized for your donations and that you get a “Thank you” letter.

So, that is the big project we have been working on, but there are many other projects going on at the same time. By the time you will be reading this we will have participated in the Fly Fishing Show in Lan-caster, PA – another Chuck Furimsky extravaganza.

It was a fun show. There were several of our adver-tiser fly shops represented. If there was something that you wanted that was related in any way to fly fishing it was at the show.

KOS Keeps Rolling

Be sure to look over the environmental update article as there are several items noted in that article that the chapter is working on. Specifically, the last item discussed is the Keeper of the Stream program which is a partnership between ourselves and Valley Forge National Historical Park. It is unique since it is the first time that a National Park has worked in

partnership to develop a volunteer program that works beyond the park’s boundaries. It is especially good for us in that with the park’s involvement it adds resources and credibility to this very important program. For more information check out the program’s web site at http://sites.google.com/site/keeperofthestream/home . It you wish to become involved in the pro-gram please contact me. We had more than 30 volunteers attend the first meeting/training on Feb. 16. We are looking for students for our Valley Forge Trout Unlimited, 2012 Fly Fishing School. This year the school

will be held on Sunday, May 20. As you might recall the school is an all day affair. We try to keep our students alert and interested by keeping them chal-lenged with information and keeping their stomachs full. The school is held at the Paradise Farm Camps in Downingtown, PA. The day starts with sign in and a continental breakfast. The morning is comprised of classroom instruction on knots, bugs, and where the fish are. After a hearty lunch it is off to the nursery for a tour to see the trout that West Chester Fish Game & Wildlife Association has raised from fin-gerlings. After the tour it is either to the casting pond for hands on one-on-one casting instruction or to the stream for an actual streamside demonstra-tion of techniques and tactics – these groups switch part way through the afternoon. When both groups have completed both exercises the students are paired with a “guide” and head off to a stream beat to try their newly acquired skills in an attempt to

T he current most evident environmental impacts are the ongoing local road constructions.

Route 202 appears to be cleared between Route 401 and North Valley Road to a way over-wide condition. However, there are to be commuter lanes off the main highway that will be running parallel. That may account for some of the width but… That was a huge loss of trees in the watershed in the span of a week.

Slip Ramps

The PA Turnpike’s Slip Ramps at Route 29 is another monster project. The cut and fill is incredible. Then the bridge piers come into view – monstrous “T” struc-tures. Even though I know what it is supposed to look like when completed, it is mind numbing. The scale of the project defies understand-ing and that entire new road way is new impervious sur-face – new to the watershed. We were able to ensure some pretty good post construction stormwater management. I am just hoping that their Best Management Practices work as well as they said they would.

The cumulative effect of these projects and the up-coming Turnpike widening project does not bode well for the future of Valley Creek. Even with today’s

stringent regulations I fear for our precious Creek.

The PA Turnpike Wid-ening Project from Valley Forge to the Slip Ramps at Route 29 is in final design and their permits are in to DEP. We are in the process of review-ing the 6 ½ mile pro-ject’s documents. We are far from accepting what the Turnpike is proposing for their

required stormwater management and protection of Valley Creek. There certainly will be more on this in the months to come.

Crabby News

Crabby Creek is still in our hearts and minds. There are currently two pieces to this puzzle. The first and oldest is the stabilization of this much worked on stream. We are seeking funding from the Valley Creek Trustee Council for an extended project that will offer long term creek stabilization, habitat im-provement and stormwater mitigation. The second piece is the Crabby Creek Sanitary Sewer mainte-

nance and reconstruction pro-ject that Tredyffrin Township is planning. This is challeng-ing since I firmly believe that a good portion of the problems in Crabby Creek are the result of the installation of the origi-nal sewer line in the Crabby valley. At this point, although we have been part of meet-ings regarding our concerns, we are being held at arm’s length and not really being allowed to be in the project design process.

A meeting with a group of Chesterbrook residents was held in February. This is a group that we at VFTU have trying to pull together for some time. They are calling themselves the Friends of Valley Creek. Owen Owens and Chuck Cutshall from VFTU and Bill Bellew of the Valley Creek Restoration Part-nership are working with the group to help them or-ganize. There is talk of this group doing a project in their area to benefit the stream. It may develop into something related to the Tidy Up Tredyffrin/Valley Creek Stream Clean Up that is to occur on April 21, perhaps even and earth Day Event. Stay tuned and if you are interested in becoming a part of or work-ing with this group please contact Owen or Chuck – their contact info is inside the back cover.

Lastly, but certainly not least is the Keeper of the Stream program. We held our initial meeting Febru-ary 16 and had a turnout of more than 30 interested

OWENS LIVING WATERS REMEMBER THE TROUT

B lue sky, fall color in the remaining leaves, Valley Creek glistening in the warm November sun--

what a day to be fishing! The water was so clear and clean every rock stood out, even though the current moved rapidly over them. Rod in hand I watched as a trout rose to a midge invisible to me--and then an-other dimpled the surface.

Along the path came Amy Ruhe, Valley Forge National Historical Park Ranger. “Hi, Owen,” she said. “This seems like a good day to finish repairing this deer ex-trusion fence.” As I walked up to where I was going to start fishing, I felt thankful for the pioneers who had preserved this park and for rangers like Amy who were doing their part to hand it down to future gen-erations.

As I cast to rising fish and waded slowly upstream, I remembered the engineer for a big developer who many years ago said to Trout Unlimited leader, Carl Dusinberre, “Why are you worried about trout? When we get done there won’t be any left!” Today that de-veloper is long gone, but Valley Creek’s rare wild trout are still very much alive--as I saw when I netted and released a beautifully marked fish.

I thought about the last article Ralph W. Abele, direc-tor of the Pennsylvania Fish Commission, wrote in the Pennsylvania Angler (May 1987).

One person with enough stubbornness can dig in his heels and say, ‘This much and no more.’ Beware of the cause that you choose for this kind of stubborn-ness, because you will surely prevail! There are great causes to be followed, and victory always starts with one person hanging on by his teeth and saying, ‘I will never give in.’ All the greed and shortsightedness of the exploiters and developers—and that includes peo-ple in state and federal governments—will not prevail if that one individual rises up and says, ‘Why should we put up with this?’ I insist that if one is stubborn enough—unmovable, unchangeable—that person can and will prevail.

When that engineer told Carl Dusinberre to stop wor-rying about the trout, he made a big mistake. Carl dug in his heels and fought for the streams of Chester

County. Joined by Mitsie Toland, John Hoekstra, John Johnson, Chuck Marshall and many others, a revital-ized Valley Creek Coalition in the 1990’s sued the PADEP twice to get them to enforce their own laws protecting the Creek as an exceptional value stream. On a fishing trip to Valley Creek not long be-fore he died, Carl said to me, “You know if it weren’t for us stream conservationists, there wouldn’t be a trout left in this stream!”

Sometimes it feels good to get away from everything and cast to a rising trout. As I learn what Marcellus Shale gas drilling is doing to the streams of Pennsyl-vania, I feel I am living again through the same old environmental mess that was done to Chester County in the 1970’s. Somebody sees they can make a lot of fast money, and once again they ignore what will hap-pen to trout, our canaries in the mine. “So what if we cut down the trees, sediment from roads we build washes into streams,” they say. “Who cares if we drill in wetlands and next to exceptional value streams? So what if deer and dairy cattle are at-tracted to salt and lick it up from our pits and spills, and their flesh is contaminated? So what if some peo-ple’s water is poisoned? You can’t fight progress!”

Remember the trout. Don’t believe all you are sold (oops, told)--learn for yourself how Marcellus Shale gas drilling is polluting the water. Dig in your heels! Find out who are your state legislators--tell them about your concerns to protect streams for those who come after us. Support the local FRAC Action Coalition--come to our monthly meetings.

Rare wild trout are indicators of healthy systems of natural and human life, like canaries in a mine. When we save the trout from plans to devastate watersheds and poison water, we also save the people. There is hope. Valley Creek is alive today. George Washington is still looking over our shoulders seeing how we are doing on liberty and justice for all. Let’s speak out, and do our part to preserve, protect, and restore the cold-water streams of Pennsylvania.

TROUT SHOW proves that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Then I started fishing those Jim Lowe and Jim Clark wets and I was hooked for life.

So back to Dave—he has written articles for such di-verse magazines as "Salmon, Trout, Steelheader," "Flyfishing & Tying Journal," "Fly Rod & Reel," and "Fly Fisherman." He authored the "Fly Fishing Success" col-

umn for "Fly Rod & Reel" for five years; those articles, and many others, were gathered into his book Taking Trout. Dave has also been a contributing editor to "Field & Stream” and was editor of "Flyfishing & Tying Journal."

An active Trout Unlimited member, Dave was founding president of Oregon Trout in 1983 and in 1985 was awarded lifetime membership in the Federation of Fly-fishers.

So if you are just a beginner or a lifelong devotee of the fly fishing arts, Dave has something for you. So join us on March 29th for an show that you don’t want to miss!

S teelhead and salmon flies have a lot of the same features in their design. A century or more back

fisherman didn’t have a lot of choices, the flies they had came from Europe, and they were tied for trout and Altantic salmon. Once Americans started tying their own flies the designs started to change and soon many tyers became specialized in their designs.

I tie mostly hairwing styles and feather wings and both work well. Some of the patterns are tied with marabou, flash materials and some even have rubber legs. Steelhead do rise to dry flies now and then which can be some of the most exciting fish-ing to be experienced. These dries often use deer hair or foam bodies to keep them buoy-ant. But often these floaters are standard dry flies tied on salmon hooks with heavy hackle. Egg fly patterns can also be effective, but I prefer to stick to the old classic and standard styles, which to me are more fun to tie.

Hairwings and Classics

I started with hairwings which are much easier to tie than the built-wing classic Atlantic salmon flies. The bodies on the hairwings are the same as the classic built-wing patterns, so this will shorten your learning

curve as you work your way up to the classic tying style. But anyone beyond the beginner stage of fly tying should be able to tie steelhead patterns and eventually the classics.

I always wanted to tie this style of fly and about five years back I decided that I have plenty of time to learn, and I am still learn-ing as I go. I found a few good books that provide step-by-step instruction, so you too should be able to tie these beautiful and ef-fective fly patterns. The books I recommend are

Steelhead Flies by Jon Shewey, Modern Atlantic Salmon Flies by Paul C. Marriner, Trout and Salmon Flies of Ireland by Peter O’Reilly and Building Classic Salmon Flies by Ron Alcott—this one is the best I’ve found for tying the full dress classics.

Some material for tying these flies would be found in any fly tyers kit—but some of the materials are spe-cialized and only used for this style of tying. Espe-cially the full dress classic salmon flies—once you are ready to tie these it will be best to go online and

search for places that specialize in these materials. Just a note of caution—some of these items are very expensive, and that is if you can find them at all. The classics call for golden pheas-ant, bronze mallard, blue mal-lard, grey mallard, jungle cock and Guinea Fowl to name a

few. Many of the patterns call for golden pheasant so this one is a “must have.” When you buy this item try to get the best feathers you can find—these would have a nice golden color, the tip should be rusty red on the last 3/8” and the feathers should have a nice curve.

Another feather to discuss is the bronze mallard as these feathers have a mind of their own when it comes to tying them on top of the wing. Make sure you use the best part of the feather, one from the left and one from the right. When cutting these feathers make sure the quill is left intact. I marry them to the top of the wing starting at the rear of the wing and work forward to the head of the fly. This method works for me most of the time, but I did a lot of talk-ing to myself until I got this method worked out.

Try looking for the more exotic feathers at the Fly Fishing Shows. I get my materials from Castle Arms, 1145 Main St., Suite 421, Springfield, MA 01103.

Two of the easier patterns to start with are the Durham Ranger and the Orange Parson, so my suggestion is to start here.

I hope this will help you get started. I have more to tell you on the hairwing patterns so look for Part II in a future issue of BANKNOTES.

folks. The meeting was an initial training session and stream beats were volunteered for. All attendees re-ceived manuals and other documents necessary to begin as stream monitors. If you missed this meeting and are interested in being part of this exciting new program, email or call me (my contact info is inside the back cover) and let me know. A brief description of the program follows.

Keeper Program

Keeper of the Stream (KOS) represents a partnership between Valley Forge NHP and the Valley Forge Chap-ter of Trout Unlimited (VFTU) to increase community involvement by developing a network of citizens that become stewards or “keepers” of the stream and help promote and facilitate the protection and restoration of the Valley Creek Watershed. Through observation, education, monitoring and conservation projects this program addresses the following goals: 1) promote the long-term protection, preservation, and restoration of the Valley Creek Watershed through the establish-ment of a network of community volunteers whose efforts outside the park boundary have a direct posi-tive impact on water resources within the park; 2) im-prove understanding of the natural and cultural impor-

tance of Valley Creek and the primary threat to the continued health of this ecosystem; and 3) develop an informed network of volunteers that will provide for early warning/early detection of threats to the health of the Valley Creek Watershed and promote rapid re-spond to address and/or mitigate these threats. Stream Watch and the Valley Creek Conservation Corps provide a variety of opportunities for KOS volun-teers to help with watershed protection.

Happy Spring in February.

catch a trout. After all, isn’t that what it is all about? After an hour and a half or so everyone returns to the dining hall one last time for a great dinner and stories. It is a long satisfying day for both the students and the instructor. We take considerable pride in this school and for me personally it is the most fun event that we do all year. For more information on the fly fishing school visit our website at http://www.valleyforgetu.org/calendar-events/fly-fishing-school/ or contact our school director John Det-trey at 610-220-9147 or [email protected] . The school is not just for beginners. We frequently have students who are looking to hone their skills or find what they are doing wrong. I especially like families that come to learn together. You know that you can-not teach you wife (or husband) to fly fish, come let us do that. For only $60 for the day you get it all - $30 if under 16. The cost barely covers the meals plus you get a great pocket guide and you learn an outdoor ac-tivity that will entertain you for a lifetime.

See you all at the TROUT SHOW.
