  • Dear Saints Families, We are finally here at the end of the semester and so close to the end of 2020! It’s incredibly hard to even think back on all that we have been through as a school community now that we are finally to this point. We would not have made it without the incredible support of our wonderful Saints families and staff. Please accept our gratitude and big virtual hugs. I pray that everyone enjoys some much-deserved rest and fun over the break. I know that the travel information and all the protocols you have to work around are difficult, but there is hope on the horizon. In spite of the concern that students around the world will be missing out on some academics and special events, I have to believe they are also gaining something that no other generation has had. They are learning patience, empathy, the importance of conversation and family, not to mention incredible tech skills for future careers. As adults we worry and worry and I wish you could hear the students laugh and participate daily in person or on ZOOM. They make the best of everything! It restores your faith and illustrates that they are much more resilient than we give them credit for. Give yourselves a pat on the back as you are doing a good job. None of us signed up for what we are being called to do right now, but we are making it work. Here’s to a much better year ahead in 2021. Hang in there, we’ve made it this far!

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

Suzanne Barto M.Ed. Principal HERE is a link to a great article by Dr. James T. McDeavitt from Baylor College of Medicine. Thank you to one of our Saints parents who shared his thoughts on the much-anticipated vaccine.

Mrs. Nickel and Mrs. Schurman would like to wish you and your family a

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Please stay well and safe.

We wanted to share some student survey results with you. The 4th-8th graders were given a survey to complete earlier in December. (It was shared with both remote and face-to-face students) It is interesting to note that over 63% of fourth-eighth graders have been at SLCS since either Pre-K or Kindergarten.

Students shared that some of their favorite things about coming to school at St. Laurence are seeing and working with their friends either virtually or face to face, learning about their faith, having different types of activities, feeling safe in the school environment, and they enjoy working with their teachers.

In regards to questions about something they would like to change or add to our school, students included being able to come face to face if they are remote, for COVID and wearing masks to be over, more recess or movement times, some changes with dress code and some said they did not really have anything they wanted changed.

Students also shared a strategy they have put in place that has helped the most during this first semester. Some of these strategies include using a schedule/agenda for keeping up with the work, being organized, studying ahead of time, taking good notes, asking questions and using Google classroom.

Students were also able to give suggestions of the careers they would like to hear about when we have a virtual career day during Catholic Schools Week. In reviewing the survey, it is apparent that many of the students are using the strategies we have discussed in our Study Skills and SEL lessons in middle school.

  • Parents and educators are feeling more stressed than ever, especially with the ongoing pandemic affecting us in so many ways. Now the holiday season is here creating added anxiety and stress. At this time, we think it might help to remember the First Rule of Love and Logic: Loving our children and our students requires that we first take care of ourselves in loving, unselfish ways.

Too frequently, we are led to believe that “good parents” and “good educators” should sacrifice their own needs to serve their children. While this sounds sweet and ever so appropriate, trying to accomplish it leaves our love reserves depleted. When our bucket is empty, we have nothing to give. Read more HERE!

TUITION ASSISTANCE FOR 2021-2022 The process to apply for Tuition Assistance for the 2021-2022 school year has begun. Completing the FACTS online application will qualify eligible families to be considered for assistance from the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and from St. Laurence Catholic School. The deadline to be considered for Archdiocesan assistance is February 19, 2021. Click HERE for more information.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SEMESTER EXAMS Fifth and sixth grade students will not be taking semester exams. Seventh grade students will take three exams and eighth grade students will take six exams. The schedule for exams is as follows:

Date Seventh Grade Eighth Grade Dec. 15 Religion Social Studies/Science Dec. 16 English English/Math Dec. 17 Math Religion/Literature

The first exams begin at 8:10-9:15 a.m. The second exam for eighth grade will be from 9:25-10:30 a.m. END-OF-YEAR GIVING OPPORTUNITY Say goodbye to 2020 with a gift to the Annual Fund to support St. Laurence Catholic School. We have raised $180,000 which is 86% of our goal, but we only have 45% participation from our school families. Once we hit 100% of our fundraising or participation goal, the whole school will get a Pajama Day! We could all use a day in pajamas, so please give today!

  • THANK YOU!  Thank you, Teacher Appreciation Committee, for organizing the Secret Santa drawing! Last week, nine teachers and six staff were lucky recipients of $25 dollar gift cards and nine classes received cookies. This is just one of the many ways that the parent-teacher community shows our appreciation for our teachers/staff.

Thank you, ECC, Elementary, and Middle School Coordinators for planning, organizing, and purchasing the snack for this Friday’s Class Christmas Parties. We would also like to thank the room parents for helping prepare the crafts for the students. Christmas parties will be drastically different than in previous years; however, it will still be fun for the students.

    REMOTE STUDENTS: DON’T FORGET!!

Don’t forget! There is a treat outside for you! Please pick up their treat by Friday. PTO PRAYER GROUP Our next PTO Prayer Group Meeting will be tomorrow, Thursday, December 17th, 8:30 am via Zoom.
