Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Club wins NRA naonal tle
The Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsman’s Club didn’t win the Pi#sburgh and Suburban Rifle League championship earlier
this year, losing to the Frazier-Simplex Rifle Club in a 'ebreaking match.
But Dormont-Mt. Lebanon, which is located near Eighty Four, found out this week that it took home a bigger prize.
Dormont-Mt. Lebanon’s Green team won the NRA Na'onal Indoor Smallbore Team Championship with a score of
4,478.
Team captain Dean Trew shot a 1,140 to win the Pennsylvania championship, while Cassidy Fairman shot a 1,135, Tom
Benedict a 1,105 and John Funk a 1,098.
Trew supplanted Fairman as the state champion. Fairman, a 2016 graduate of Indiana High School, won that 'tle in
2015 with a 1,139. Fairman did bring home another honor, as her score was good enough to win the women’s na'onal
championship.
Trew’s score was seventh overall among men and earned him third place in the Master’s Division.
“I was very surprised,” said Trew. “Cassidy and everyone on the team shot well, and I was fortunate enough to have a
good performance on that day. I was just hoping we could break into the top three.”
It was Dormont-Mt. Lebanon’s second na'onal championship. The club won the na'onal conven'onal 4-posi'on 'tle
in 2004 but had never before won the indoor 3-posi'on championship, which is honored with the Chief Army Reserve
Trophy.
In winning the 'tle, Dormont-Mt. Lebanon got a li#le revenge on their local rival, not that Frazier-Simplex had a bad
showing.
Frazier’s Gold team finished fourth overall with a 4,444. Former na'onal champion John Husk fired a 1,133 to rank
14th in the na'on, while Tom Morley had a 1,119, Sylvia Dreistadt a 1,087 and Zachary Nicolella a 1,105. Nicolella won
the individual 'tle in the PSL earlier this year.
The two local teams always push each other.
“When we were shoo'ng, we were more focused on bea'ng our Washington County rivals, Frazier-Simplex, than we
were worrying about a na'onal ranking,” Trew admi#ed. “They’re a really great group of people over there in
Wolfdale; they’ve got a phenomenal organiza'on and we love bea'ng them.
“They’re like the New York Yankees of rifle shoo'ng. We might be the Pirates.”
They also became just the fi!h team to win the Chief Trophy, which was first awarded in 1997, joining the U.S. Army
Marksmanship Unit, which has won it seven 'mes, the Black Hawks Rifle Club, which has won six, and Palmyra Rifle
Team and University of Alaska Fairbanks, which have won three each.
In the Conven'onal Na'onal Indoor Championships, DML Gold finished third with a score of 1,570-108X.
Trew again led the way with a 396-31X, while Ray Harvey (394-29X), Sarah Fink (391-23-X) and Ma#hew Lovre (389-
25X) made up the rest of the team. The Buffalo Sharpshooters won the championship with a 1,578-106X.
Frazier-Simplex Gold was sixth at 1,565-97X. Husk, who was second master class na'onally with a 793-63X, led the way
in that event with a 393-24X. Morley (392-27X), Nicolella (392-26X) and Dreistadt (388-20X) again made up the Frazier
team.
Dormont-Mt. Lebanon’s Silver team finished ninth in the event with a 1,544-92X. Benedict, Miles Ford, Funk and Kevin
Dufford made up that team.
In addi'on to Husk’s second-place finish na'onally, Harvey was fi!h, Trew seventh and Dreistadt eighth in the master
class. Lovre finished second in the sharpshooter class.

first ever NRA America’s Rifle Challenge Match. This inaugural event was enjoyed by all, and will
serve as a springboard for future action rifle matches here at DMLSC. The three categories were
iron sights, limited (includes all non-magnified optics, and open (includes magnified optics). John
Lechner took top spot with a score of 330; Wayne Thompson had the top iron score with 295; and
Jim Madar took the limited honors with a 319. The course of fire was deemed to be fun,
interesting, and challenging. The next Basic Level Match will be held on Sunday, Aug 28th

Another great day of shooting was shared by seven participants at the June High Power Match here at DMLSC. The
weather was super and as always, the camaraderie was excellent. Welcome back to Stephanie Sherman from her hiatus
on the firing line. Top score for the match went to Tom Morley with a 481-20X. Also noteworthy was putting 16 of 20
shots into the X-ring for the slow fire prone stage. Great shooting Tom! Next match will be on July 2nd
. All are welcome.

CMP MATCH June 19, 2015
What a great way to spend Father’s Day – nice warm weather and punching out holes
with your favorite rifle. Thus was the fate of these 16 shooters. Mike Kennedy took
top honors with a 485-17X and he cleaned the targets in both prone stages. Nice
shooting Mike! Gary Scherer was in strong form shooting his bolt action with a 476-
12x, and Chuck Augenstein was top dog with the Garand posting a 473-7x. Welcome
to newcomers Dave Nolder, Rob Denton, and Ben Davis. The next match will be a 200

CMP Carbine Match
July 10, 2016
The beast of combat rifles (a.k.a. The M1 Carbine) came out of its safe, saw its shadow, and thus we will have
15 more weeks of shooting. Thus goes the experience of the nine marksmen participating in the Annual M1
Carbine Match. Great weather! Great Camaraderie! Just a fun little match in sending 40 rounds downrange
for score. After 12 years of competition shooting here at DMSC, John Tupta finally hit the top of the charts
with a 349-3x. This certainly lends credence to the adage that given enough time, even a blind squirrel will
eventually find a nut. Nice shooting to all! The following cutoff scores will apply during the 2016 National
Matches: Gold 356+, Silver 342-355, Bronze 328-340, T – Shirt 400 or below.
