A fter a rough start to spring sports — snow days, canceled school and practices — things are rolling on for the season. The crack of the bat is a sure
sign that spring has arrived, not to mention the beautiful greens, the thrill of the race, and the swing of the racket.
This season means track and field, golf, tennis, baseball and softball.
Our high school student-athletes and coaches have been working hard in a shorter amount of time to make sure they’re ready for that first track meet or baseball game. It’s our turn to show up to cheer them on each week, rain or shine.
In this special issue, published by the Itemizer-Observer, we take a quick look at all of our high school spring sports teams. We’re excited to see how they do.
The section is by school, alphabetically, making it easier to find the sports and schools you’re most interested in.
Each story includes the full team schedule, so keep the section around or feel free to cut out that schedule and put it on your fridge. We have included team photos and pictures of each student-athlete on the roster.
Our featured athlete this season is senior Jaydon Aydelotte, who runs track and field for Central High School. Check out page 8 to read more about why he de-serves the title of spotlight athlete.
We’re thrilled to see the start of spring sports, and hope you enjoy this look at our young athletes.

The rundown...Head coach: Tom Roberts
(second season). 2018 record: 13-13, losing 3-2
to Marist in play-in game in the postseason.
Key returners: Kaleb Kantola, Ruben Cedillo, Conner Laeng, Brendan Lesmeister, Brando Lopez, Hunter Chase and Emilia-no Alarcon.
Newcomers to watch: Kyle Holt, Trent Cyphers and Ricky Taylor.
Outlook for the season: Tom
Roberts is back as head coach of the Panther baseball team, and it’s the first time his senior players have had the same coach two years in a row. Roberts said he is hopeful it will add some stability to the team that they haven’t had in a while.
“I know that instability in coaching can be a hard thing to overcome,” he said.
Another obstacle the team will have to face and overcome is the gap left by the graduated seniors last year, specifically one player.
“Replacing a Peter Mendazona
is never an easy thing to do,” Roberts said.
However, he’s confident the guys will step up to the challenge.
“We are fortunate to have Emiliano (Alarcon) back this year, as he played in an academy in Mexico last year. He will bring a lot of leadership that we will need. Guys like Kaleb (Kantola), Ruben (Cedillo) and Conner (Laeng) all played high levels of summer ball with a lot of success, which will translate to our team and help lead us on and off the field.”
Overall, Roberts said he is
expecting this season to be a good one.
“I am expecting big things out of these guys,” he said. “We have very high expectations with a se-nior-heavy team, but realize that we need to keep focused and take it one game at a time. We just can’t wait to get on the field and get to work.”
The Panthers first league game is April 8 at West Albany at 5 p.m.

“Our boy’s team has the potential to make the regional tournament this year,” Everett said. “They are a solid group of golfers all with
another year of experience. We should be better this year as a team and not as reliant on one or two individuals as in the past.”
The girls squad might be inex-perienced, but they’re hungry to learn and have a good season.
“Our girl’s team is going to be young on the experience side, but I’m really excited for the ladies
that we have out,” Everett said. “They are a very coachable group and want nothing more than to do this right, no matter the time it takes. That is very important mind set to have in golf, and I’m glad these ladies are here to play.”

their first playoff game 6-0 at Putnam.
Key returners: Mariah Hyre, Allison Wells, Kassidy Noon and Sydney Nash.
Newcomers to watch: Na-turelle Perez and Peyton Fore-man.
Outlook for the season: With head coach Amber McLean back in action after a five-year
hiatus following her twins being born, the Panthers are ready for another round of softball.
“This is actually my ninth year as head coach at Central, and 20th year of being a part of the Central Panther softball program in one capacity or another,” Mc-Lean said. “I am looking forward to returning to the Central soft-ball family, something that was a major part of me for so long. I’m also looking forward to introduc-ing this aspect of my life to my twins.”
Last year, the team fell in the
first playoff game at Putnam after a 15-4 record. The girls return this year determined to work hard and make it farther in the postseason.
“We have a very talented group of young ladies that are ready to work hard,” McLean said. “We hope to make a deep run in the state playoffs, and of course the ultimate goal is to be playing in the State Championship come June 1.”

The rundown...Head coach: Patti Youngren
(sixth season).2018 record: Key returners:
Antonio Martinez, Zach Stone, Chase Magill and Moshe Mar-tinez.
Newcomers to watch: Har-rison Eberly, Nathaniel Thom-as, David Glade and Jean de Wouters.
Outlook for the season: The Panthers tennis team is off to an interesting start for their 2019 spring season. Their first week
of hitting the courts was met with two snow days and canceled practice, and with their first meet on March 12, it was a quick turn-around. Additionally, head coach Patti Youngren broke her ankle sliding down a hill that first week.
“My daughter, Alice Holliday, will be assisting me this year,” Youngren said. “She helped me when coaching the girls almost two decades ago.”
Beyond those obstacles, Youn-gren is looking forward to another tennis season.
“We will be working hard on
teamwork this year,” she said. “I will help the boys instruct each other at matches, because I won’t be able to run around the outside of the courts for a while. It was something I wanted to work on anyway, so this is going to be a great excuse to get players in-volved outside of their own game. I think the players will learn so much by watching and helping their teammates. I think it will probably be our best year in a while.”
Youngren is relying on some of her returners, such as Martinez
and Stone, to guide the newcom-ers this year.
“Last year was a building year. Most of my returning boys will have played only one year,” she said. “I still have players with other commitments to complete, so to be truthful, as the season opens up, so will their skills.”
The boys traveled to La Salle Prep for their first meet on March 12, to North Marion on March 19 and will head to Philo-math on March 21 at 4 p.m.

JaydonAydelotteathlete spotlight
On the track and on the stageIndependence – Jaydon
Aydelotte is always on the move. From rushing off to play rehears-als after track practice to dealing with student council issues, the senior from Central High School is constantly busy.
And he puts 100 percent of himself into each activity, said head track and field coach Eli Cirino.
“He does everything you could possibly ask a kid to do,” Cirino said. “Not only does he show up for all of this, but he’s also in the play. And he does it year-round; he’s always totally maxed out. … And he even shows up to all of the fundraisers that we do, and it’s like, Jaydon, how do you actually
do all this?”He does, somehow, and all of it
with a big grin on his face. He said he’s looking forward to
another season of track and field.“I’m feeling pretty good,” he
said. “I feel like I’m a bit slower on the start of things because I’ve also been doing the school play, Fiddler on the Roof, it’s another one of my passions — acting — so it’s been balancing both and doing winter training while the play has been a balancing game, but I’m so excited to be back in track.”
Last year, Aydelotte placed fourth at the OSAA 5A State Track and Field Championships in the intermediate hurdles.
“Last track season was pretty monumental for me, as compet-ing went,” Aydelotte said. “I quali-fied for high hurdles, intermediate and the 4x400 relay at state, which was super cool, especially with Hayward Field’s last year of being there. And I was able to advance into the finals for the intermediate hurdles and placed fourth. And for me, I was very proud of that accomplishment because I have never gone to state for the intermediates before and so to have run that race was awesome.”
He’ll do the same events this year, and said he wants to finish off his last high school track sea-son with another shot at state.
“My goals for this last track season is to qualify for state again in both hurdle races, and I hope to race in the top three for both events. That’s my goal for the year. My, kind of sub-goal to that, for me is just to making the most of this year and not being fixated so much on place or times, but just experiencing the moment and the people here with all the positive energy, just really taking it in and being present.”
Cirino said Aydelotte is a model student-athlete.
“He’s awesome,” Cirino said. “There are so many factors to being a successful student-athlete beyond being a gifted athlete, and Jaydon covers all the bases.
He takes care of everything in the classroom, he takes care of himself physically, he comes with a positive attitude, and he’s never having to make excuses. He’s really disciplined. He’s committed. And really truly understands what that means.”
Beyond being a top-tier athlete, Aydelotte has always assumed a quiet leadership role on the track team.
“His teammates admire him and look up to him, and coaches fight for him,” Cirino said. “He’s been a natural leader. The kids really respond to him.”
He’s the kind of person who leads by example, Cirino said, and last year he did that not only
with his positive attitude, but with discipline and determination. He only lost one race last year, and Cirino is expecting big things from him again this year.
“I would be surprised if he didn’t set a personal record and run his lifetime best. I know that this year in cross-country, he had a healthier and more successful season than he’s ever had before, and I look forward to seeing that continue in track season.”
So is Aydelotte, and he’s plan-ning on working hard to get there.
“I know if I show up here every day and give my 110 percent energy, I know the rest will carry through.”

The rundown...Head coach: Eli Cirino (12th
season).2018 record: The girls squad
finished their season with a fifth-place spot in league, and the boys nabbed a third-place title.
Key returners | Girls: Sophia Henke, Morgan Metzger, Ana Becerra, Samantha Londigan, Diana Nye, Kennedy Kantola and Naomi Vega.
Key returners | Boys: Jay-don Aydelotte, Jonathon Brown,
Caylen Thomas, and Maynard DeWitt.
Newcomers to watch | Girls: Sophia Bliss and Faith Sanchez.
Newcomers to watch | Boys: Jamie Deckard-Light.
Outlook for the season: Head coach Eli Cirino is looking forward to another season of track and field. The loss of the graduated seniors on the boys side who helped to carry the team last season will be felt, he said, especially in the sprinting events, so he’s looking to seniors
like Aydelotte and Brown to fill in those gaps.
“Our boys are very young and we lost a lot of experienced seniors,” he said. “We don’t have the strength in the sprints that we have had in the last couple years. But we do have some depth in the distance crew. I am looking forward to a season of growth and opportunity.”
It’s a different story on the girl’s side.
“Our girls, though, have more depth than we have had in many
years, returning most of the girls from the league champion 4X100, as well as adding some talented freshman who can help us all over the track,” he said. “We have a strong coaching staff and our numbers are a little down, so I am excited that our kids will get a lot of attention from some great coaches. I expect to have a lot of fun, a bunch of surprises and tremendous growth.”

The rundown...Head coach: Danielle Landis
(fourth season).Key returners: Seniors Emma
Johnson and Madi Shuck, and sophomores Annie Johnson and Tori Woolner.
Outlook for the season: The Dragons girls golf team is small, with only four girls to make up the squad, but it’s a team that’s ready to start up another season and have a good time on the green.
“We are looking to improve each week and have tons of fun,”
said head coach Danielle Landis. It’s been a cold start to spring,
with unexpected snow days and some canceled school days.
The season took off quickly, and the girls have already com-peted in two tournaments: on March 11, they traveled to Salem
Golf Club, and March 18 they traveled to Mallard Creek in Lebanon.
April 1, they host at Cross Creek in Dallas, starting at 11 a.m.

The rundown...Head coach: Brandi Jackson
(Ninth season).2018 record: 24-2 overall,
18-0 Mid-Willamette Confer-ence.
Key returners: Kaelynn Sim-mons and Emma Classen.
Newcomers to watch: None mentioned.
Outlook for the season: Hard work is the name of the game for the Dallas Dragons soft-ball team this season.
“We are anxious for this sea-son and expect to work hard and compete day in and day out,” said head coach Brandi Jackson.
Their season is packed with games, which gives the team plenty of time to demonstrate what they’ve been working on so hard in practices.
Last year, the team graduated Jayden Wynia, Jordan Dipple, Lauren Wallace and Emily May, but Jackson said the other girls have stepped up into those lead-ership roles.
“We had some key players graduate last year, but we are excited and confident in our girls filling those spots this year,” Jackson said. “Our goal every year starting out is to focus on playing our game by working hard, being consistent and completing everyday.”
The team’s first league game is at home on April 9 against Leba-non at 5 p.m.

The rundown...Head coach: Caleb Gillette
(fifth season).2018 Record: Not given.Key Returners: Jacob Gil-
lette, Quentin Foster, Caleb Jones and Casey Tilgner.
Newcomers to watch: None mentioned.
Outlook for the season: Head coach Caleb Gillette wants to make sure that his team has fun this season, first and foremost. It’s
not all about wins, he said.“I really don’t have any expec-
tations this season, and I don’t mean that to be negative. I’m more focused on seeing the boys improve day by day, while enjoying the process,” Gillette said. “They’re often far to critical of their prog-ress and you can’t succeed that way. My hope is for them to learn how to play for their love of the game. I’d say that’s the focus of our season. Let’s be focused and intense, but maintain the inner joy
for the game and keep everything in perspective. We’re blessed by God to be out here playing this game; many people in the world don’t have this opportunity, so be thankful for it. Perspective chang-es everything and we need to re-member this, myself included.”
The team consists of many returners from last year as well as some newcomers, and Gillette said he’s excited about the team make-up and its chemistry.
“Many of them are juniors,
and I believe this will be the year they actually see the reward that comes with perseverance and determination,” he said. “So far we have three freshmen that are new and have picked it up quicker than most. So I’m excited for them, hopefully they can stay relaxed and play for the joy of the game.”
The Panthers have already knocked out three matches against Silverton, Cascade and Molalla. Their next meet is April 2 at Lebanon at 4:30 p.m.

(fifth season).2018 record: 10-4.Key returners: Peyton Fast,
Amanda Schafer, Kinzi Boer, Le-anne Sleeper, Jasmine Contreras, Rebekah Rocak, Madelyn Kenne-dy and Megan Johnston
Newcomers to watch: Emily West, Sarah Baer, Hadley Nel-son, Brieanna Howard and Molly Burger
Outlook for the season: An-other season of tennis is underway
for the Dragons girls tennis team, with many returners from last year to help lead the way for the newcomers.
“We returned about half of our varsity line-up from last year,” said head coach Jordan Sollman. “I believe we have just the best girls here at Dallas. Every year we have a great turn out for tennis. Every year we have girls that come out ready to get better and grow as athletes and tennis players. Ex-cited to see how some of our re-turners do, filling in shoes of some of our seniors from last year, and
I am equally excited to see some girls embrace the opportunity to play some varsity tennis for the first time and experience that level of play. Very exciting.”
The season kicked off early, with two meets already in the books for the Dragons, and with the late-winter weather and can-celed school days, the team had to buckle down to make sure they were prepared for the start of the season.
Sollman said he is excited for what this season will bring.
“We have a very dedicated
group of girls that are ready to compete and come out to the beautiful Oregon weather to continue to grow and get better,” he said. “I believe we have a lot of potential this year to do very well, and I can’t wait to see the growth we make as a team and individual-ly throughout this tennis season.”
The Dragons next match is April 2 against Lebanon at 4:30 p.m.

The rundown...Head coach: Bill Masai
(eighth season).2018 record: The boys team
finished fourth, and the girls squad nabbed a fifth place spot at districts.
Key returners: Trevor Cross, Toby Ruston, Malaki Connella,
Hailey Van Well, Marie Marshall, Ellie Osbourne, Kristi Cook, Taylor Williamson, Sage Arneson, Jack Anderson, and Carlie Sher-man.
Newcomers to watch: None mentioned.
Outlook for the season: Last year, the Dragons track and field team took three individuals
to state: Connella, Van Well and Marshall.
The goal is to take more than that this season, said head coach Bill Masai.
As the season takes off, the biggest obstacle the Dragons will face is not having a home base to practice on.
“This year will be challenging,
not having a track facility. We will use LaCreole one a week and have been invited to use Central High Schools facility for practice and meets as well,” Masai said.
The track renovations at DHS will begin this spring.

Outlook for the season: The Mountaineers track team has expanded this year, and head coach Ronnie Simmons is excited about it.

kins, Kyndle Moore, Kenzy Law-rence, Sydney Lawrence, Megan Freeborn, and Nathalie Juarez.
Newcomers to watch: Naomi Cruickshank, Courtney Burbank,
Keirsten Moore,Sophie Junghans, Sarina Russi, and Jenna Tompkins.
Outlook for the season: This season’s Pirates softball season is a mix of experience and new-comers.
“We have experience up the middle, and our pitchers throw strikes,” said head coach Chris Gubrud. “We will need to man-ufacture runs in the back of our
lineup, but we are pretty solid hitting in our first one through six spots. We are shaky in the out-field, but getting better fast. Lots of inexperience out there.”
The season has started off quick, with a few non-league con-tests under the girls’ belts to get things going, 20-1 victory to start things off. Their first league game began a series against Knappa on
March 19 and 20. Next up is an away game at St. Paul on April 2 at 4:30 p.m., followed by a home game doubleheader, also against the Buckaroos, opening at 4 p.m. The Pirates will see each of their opponents three times this sea-son, so plenty of opportunity to knock the season out of the park.

Head Coach: Brian Evans (fifth season).
2018 record: Girls took fifth in state.
Key returners | Girls: Amity Deters, Alyssa Lux, Jessica Cruik-shank.
Key returners | Boys: Josh Crawford.
Newcomers to watch | Girls: Sophie Junghans, Kiyla Clement, Kenzy Lawrence and Sydney Lawrence.
Newcomers to watch | Boys: Jalen Baker and Brandon Graber.
Outlook for the season: It’s a good year to be on the Perrydale
Pirate track and field team.“We have almost doubled the
size of our team this year,” said head coach Brian Evans, “which is a little stressful as a coach, but it gives us such a good opportunity to be very successful on both the girls and boys sides of events. I am very fortunate to have quality, talented coaches surrounding me who are great at guiding all of our new athletes to become the best they can be.”
Last year, the Pirates girls team nabbed a fifth place spot in state, with multiple individuals who placed at the meet returning this year.
Amity Deters was the high
jump state champion, and took fourth place in both the long and triple jumps.
Alyssa Lux took sixth in javelin.Lux and Deters were also part
of the 4x100-meters relay team that took second in state, joining Jessica Cruikshank and graduate Kieley Griffin for the victory.
This track season will be differ-ent, but in an exciting way.
“We are hosting our very first track meet at Perrydale on Sat-urday, May 4,” said Evans. “Nine schools will be attending with well over 100 athletes.”
It’s been a yearlong effort to make sure that their first annual track meet will happen.
“We had a fundraiser last sea-son which raised not only money for our team and track facilities, but awareness to the community that we are serious about track and want a meet that the com-munity can be proud of,” Evans said “It’s taken a lot of work this year, some of it still ongoing: a new run-up for our javelin throw-ers, discus pad relocation and shot-put landing sector filled in with rock. We are having another fundraiser this year with a goal in mind of adding pole vault next year to our facilities.”
