About The Summit

Previous Speakers

Brian Prestidge has 8 years experience working within elite football at Bolton Wanderers FC delivering analytical support to coaches, sport science teams and players. Brian transitioned to Head of Recruitment during the 2012/2013 season before moving into his current position as Head of Analytical Development which also sees him oversee the Recruitment & Analysis departments at the club. His current remit is to establish and develop best practice throughout the club with innovative data collection, efficient analysis and insightful visualisation and presentation.

Technology Driven Insights in Football

Technology plays a key role in the day to day practices of players, coaches and support staff in football and this is no more evident than in analytics. The continual improvement of measurement technologies, the advancement of analytical platforms and the innovative presentation tools now available places practitioners in the industry in a precarious position of implementing these tools to advance the game, whilst ensuring they don’t fall foul of being caught up with novel systems that provide no functional impact whatsoever. This session will take a look at the daily impact technology has at Bolton Wanderers FC and the processes they follow to ensure each system has impact on the day to day practices of the club.

Darren Sandbach heads up the digital learning team within FA Learning and is responsible for the delivery of online learning environments for multiple disciplines and groups across the football family in England. Joining shortly prior to the opening of St. George’s Park, his focus is on providing engaging, relevant and cutting edge content to coaches, referees, clubs, volunteers and the full coaching workforce. Darren and his team take direct responsibility for producing all educational content – from online CPD to magazines to editorial content on websites.

Prior to joining the FA, Darren worked in digital marketing and communications at Experian, Severn Trent Water and Ricardo AEA.

Supporting the Development of Football Through Digital

Over the next 12-18 months online learning and content delivery will be vital to the success of various FA initiatives, including St George’s Park and the FA Licensed Coaches’ Club. With such vast participation in the sport, it’s simply not possible to service the educational needs of football via face to face delivery. With 17,000 online course completions purely from the coaching fraternity in the 2012/13 season we’re off to a good start but our technology is outdated, too costly to maintain and presents a problematic user experience. With 30,000 new coaches qualified per year, 27,000 currently qualified referees, 400,000 volunteers and participants mobilising every weekend there is clear room for growth. It’s not just e-learning, it’s content delivery through relevant platforms – apps, websites, mobile and anything else relevant will be leveraged to achieve our goals.

Darren is the High Performance Manager for Red Bull UK. Extreme sports athletes are extra ordinary people, doing extra ordinary things - as such they have unique performance demands which Darren and the rest of the high performance team have to meet all over the world. Darren has been working with Red Bull and it’s athletes for the last 10 years, prior to that he worked with Premiership and Superleague rugby teams as well as spending 9 years in the armed forces. Away from work he has a keen interest in cycling and triathlons, competing in a number of ironman distance races over the years.

Are The Batteries Included? - Challenges Facing Technology In Extreme Sports.

Technology moves at an exponential rate in the consumer market.   However is this the case in sports? Are we still grounded in heavy, complex, static equipment which is better suited to laboratory conditions?

Information needs to be captured from the athlete in their performance playground, which are often in hostile environments using wearable technology providing instant feedback. Where are these innovations going to come from? Who are the leaders in these technologies, and will sport be at the front of any new developments?

The Officiating Replay System: Enhancing Sport for All.

Developed for the London 2012 Olympics, the Officiating Replay System (ORS) allows for live review of an unlimited number of broadcast camera feeds simultaneously. All feeds are recorded in sync and multiple feeds can be viewed for fast and accurate incident reviews. Additionally, recorded footage can be replayed after the event for: post-match, medical and coaching analysis. By providing a robust, quick and accurate technology; officials, players and fans alike can all enjoy the game knowing the correct decisions are being made without significant interruptions.

Analytics and the Olympics: The Development of Performance Analysis Systems for Elite Sport

In 2008 UK Sport invested in projects to design, develop and deliver performance analysis systems for Team GB's Olympic sports. The aim was to capture data and collect information that would lead to more medals at London 2012. The systems developed ranged from the simplest of video feedback devices, to complex 3-dimensional tracking of trajectories. Thirty projects supported 15 sports and helped win 24 medals at London 2012. The keys to the success of the projects were their apparent simplicity stemming from a design process that involved the end user (usually the analyst) from inception. Systems will be described that were developed for boxing, tae-kwondo, swimming, diving and athletics.

Richard leads the creative output at Bigballs Films who since 2006 have evolved from the pioneering production outfit behind the world's first social network drama Kate Modern and the Cannes Gold Lion winning football game I AM PLAYR, to Europe's leading YouTube original content partners, creating and producing new sports and entertainment channels on the platform. The first channel to launch, the football focused Copa90 has reached over 360,000 subscribers and 28m views in less than 9 months and will be followed by action sports channel Line9 and soon to be announced US College Sports channel in late 2013.

Creating a global sports network for a new generation.Sport speaks   to people across the generations. But how it articulates itself can be different for people of different ages.

That was the   central belief behind the launch of Bigballs’     first sports channel, the football   themed  Copa90 on YouTube in October 2012. In only nine months it is already ranked fifth in the world among YouTube channels for football and has been built   without access to   match footage. This might seem to present a disruptive   challenge for football businesses   that have grown exponentially on the back of  an explosion in the value of television rights. But, as YouTube has reportedly   forecast the online-video audience to be larger than linear TV’s by 2020, it is clear that online is here to stay. And in fact, that presents enormous   opportunities for the football business, which is no longer restricted to peaks   in interest   around 90 minutes’ match action, or in fact for the wider world of   competitive sports  whose digital native fans and supporters all call YouTube home.

In this session   Richard will discussing just how a company with a funny name is setting out   to   create the next generation sports network on YouTube with the help of a global audience of fans, who are underserved by traditional media.

Athletic Brain Training - The New Frontier of Human Performance

The brain of an expert athlete is different. Athletes have to be experts at taking in visual information, processing that information into manageable “chunks”, and then making rapid and precise high-speed decisions. Athletes build these skills through practice and game experience. Our evolving understanding points at ways to isolate and train high-speed decision skills through the application of neuroscience and athlet ic brain train ing. The GlaxoSmithKline Human Performance Lab and Axon Sports are developing training programs and tools that speed up this learning process and accelerate the acquisition of athletic cognitive expertise.  This application of neuroscience and sports science enables athletes to “Train Above the Neck”.
