The Hawai‘i Pacific University identity reflects the values of Hawai‘i in the Pacific. Our dedication to excellence

The Pacific nurtures us as wayfarers in globally relevant education, seekers of the highest and the best,

providing a training ground for leaders in diplomacy and right action in a global village.

Inspired by the impact of the Pacific on our culture and lifestyle, And by the traditional Hawaiian amakua (family

god), once representing a sea warrior, the shark is a natural transition for the university. The shark showcases

purpose, strength, and balance - which is the type of student athlete that HPU has. This athletics logo

demonstrates the University's sense of Hawai‘i pride and its place in the Pacific. Accents of the shark refer to

the new HPU logo, inspired by the vast Pacific Ocean that surrounds our state, a visual identity that

synchronizes our movement forward and our openness towards future possibilities.

As of August 1, 2014, the university’s athletics teams are called the Sharks. They compete in the Pacific West Conference as part of the National

Collegiate Athletic Association's Division II. Hawai‘i Pacific University's first venture into intercollegiate athletics came with the formation of the

men's basketball team. The university previously competed in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics before joining the NCAA in the

mid-1990s,
