• Since the restoration of its legitimate seat in international sports organizations in the late 70s and early 80s, China has actively taken part in various competitions, including the last five World Cup championships held by FIFA.

• But on all occasions it was knocked out/ eliminated in the zonal preliminaries and failed to advance to the final stage.

• Over the past two decades or so, the Chinese sport circles have raised an inspiring slogan ‘Rush out of Asia and march into the world’.

• In some sports, such as table tennis, weightlifting and fancy diving, China has reached the continental/ European and world levels.

• But the picture/situation is quite different in the world’s No.1 sport football / soccer.

• To be exact, here we mean the men’s soccer, not women’s soccer. The Chinese women's soccer, which got the second place at the Atlanta Olympics, is still quite strong.

• It will take us a long time to fill the gaps between China and world’s soccer powers. To achieve this, first of all, our players must improve their individual skills in all the technical movements, such as dribbling, passing and shooting.

• Second, they must improve their tactical cooperation. This is particularly necessary for a national team with its members coming from different countries /clubs and playing different styles.

• The 11 team members must pull together to make an organic whole. As has been proved by the World Cup games, whatever style a team plays, there must be a good balance between attack and defense, and it is wrong to overemphasize one and neglect the other.

• Our players must also improve their psychological training. They must build a strong desire to win and confidence in victory, trying to catch up when falling behind and never giving up when meeting strong opponents.

• Our national team has almost always lost to South Korea mainly because of the deep-rooted “phobia of South Korea”.

• A player will never be able to conquer his opponents if he fails to overcome/defeat/beat himself and his own mental barriers.

• More and more Chinese people are enjoying a fashionable sporting lifestyle.

• They start to spend their spare time doing keep-fit exercises in gymnasiums and stadiums where they did not use to go.

• With the rising living standards, people require to keep themselves fit and beautiful. The trend has created a need for our country to open more gymnasiums and stadiums.
