Molik, the top seed, has already sent out a psychological warning shot. Molik and Dokic both battled to win their matches in three sets yesterday with Molik beating Canberra’s Al- ison Bai 3-6 6-3 6-1, and Dokic outlasting Victor- ian Tammi Patterson 7-5 2-6 6-3. Molik, 29, and Dokic, 27, travelled as juniors together but have not met in a senior tour event. ‘‘We’ve practised so many years together and been on so many junior trips together, it’s all a bit of a blur but the junior rival- ry will come back out on Saturday, I’m sure,’’ Molik said. Molik recalled Dokic’s stirring run to the Aust- ralian Open quarter- finals two years ago, but warned even experi- enced players could be- come apprehensive. In the men’s draw, top seed Peter Luczak rea- ched the semi-finals with a 6-3 7-6 (7-5) win over Victorian James Lemke. He is set to meet West Australian Mat- thew Ebden. Good to be True Brett Young DEFENDING Sydney to Hobart handicap champion Two True took a giant step towards making her mark in this year’s race on a day when several of her rivals copped a solid drenching. The 40 foot South Australian Beneteau First 40 had her title de- fence thrown into dis- array last Monday week after she suffered mast breakage during her de- livery to Sydney. Her plight generated an extraordinary re- sponse in the sailing community, with a flood of offers of help and of replacement masts. Yesterday in Sydney, Two True installed her replacement mast loan- ed to her by Cruising Yacht Club of Australia vice com- modore Howard Pig- gott, whose First 40 Fly- ing Cloud isn’t contest- ing this year’s race. Two True boat man- ager Brett Young was overwhelmed by the re- sponse after the top third of her mast was damaged as the boat was being towed off a sandbar at Victoria’s Apollo Bay. Meanwhile con- tenders in the Rolex Tro- phy Rating Series on Sydney Harbour faced thunderstorms on Thursday; handicap honours went to TP 52 Hooligan, attached to Team New Zealand. Pocock would swap all personal accolades for World Cup success David Pocock POWERHOUSE flanker David Pocock collected yet another major gong yesterday — and then said he’d happily swap his swag of individual awards for the rugby union World Cup. Pocock added the Rugby Union Players’ Association’s Medal for Excellence to his John Eales Medal and People’s Choice award as Australian fans’ player of the year. The 22-year-old back-rower was also shortlisted for international player of the year honours af- ter a mighty season for the in- consistent Wallabies. While humbled by all the ac- colades, Pocock said helping Australia claim the ultimate team prize on offer in New Zea- land next year remained his No. 1 priority. Two-time champions Austra- lia has not lifted the Webb Ellis Cup since 1999. ‘‘You’d swap everything for that,’’ Pocock said. ‘‘Definitely, every rugby player’s dream and goal is to win a World Cup, so next year will be a massive year for us. We can’t get ahead of ourselves. We’ve put in a lot of hard work and we’ve pro- gressed a bit this year, but we’re still nowhere near where we need to be.’’ Prince in Olympics probe OLYMPIC authorities are seeking clarification from Monaco after an American, who claims to have been an em- ployee of Prince Albert II, alleged breaches of the International Olym- pic Committee’s code of ethics. In a letter to the IOC, Robert Eringer’s lawyer said there was evidence Prince Albert, an IOC member, received gifts from former Russia pre- sident Vladimir Putin before and after the vote to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. Snow blow to NFL game WORKERS wielding shovels and snow blowers tried to clear snowdrifts from the Uni- versity of Minnesota’s outdoor stadium yester- day in readiness for an NFL game on Monday. The university’s stadium — normally the home of the Golden Go- phers gridiron team — was tabbed to stage the Minnesota Vikings’ home game against the Chicago Bears after heavy snowfall last weekend caused the in- flatable teflon roof of the Vikings’ Metrodome stadium to collapse and three panels to rip. Rugby to rake in millions RUGBY World Cup organisers say they are on track to draw 85,000 international visitors and gross $A201 million in ticket sales for the sport’s 2011 showpiece in New Zea- land. Since the sales program was launched earlier this year, 864,000 tickets have been sold, nearly two-thirds of the overall target of 1.45 million sales across the 48 matches. About 662,000 of those have been sold through Rugby New Zealand 2011’s global public ticket phases. Tic- ket sales revenue totals $A124.5 million. Aussie short-course silver AUSTRALIA claimed its first medal on the opening night of the world short-course swimming titles in Dubai finish- ing second behind world record-breaking China in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay. China took almost three seconds off the old mark to take gold in 7min 35.94sec. The first four finishers all broke the old record, set by the Neth- erlands in 2008, with the Australian team of Blair Evans, Jade Neilsen, Kelly Stubbins and Kylie Palmer storming home to pip the US and France. Stosur heads Fed Cup squad SAM Stosur is set to reignite her rivalry with French Open champion Francesca Schiavone after being named in an ex- tended Australian Fed Cup squad to play Italy early next year. World No. 6 Stosur, who lost to Schiavone at Roland Garros, heads a seven-strong squad for the February 5-6 tie in Hobart. Jarmila Groth and Sophie Ferguson are a chance, while Anas- tasia Rodionova, Alicia Molik, Jelena Dokic and Rennae Stubbs were also called up.
