GHOSTS, witches and things that go bump in the night – there’s nothing more fun for kids than Hallowe’en and the best part for most is going Trick or Treating. When they are very young this is no problem because you will be going with them but if they are older and want to go with friends it can be worrying. National personal safe- ty charity the Suzy Lamplugh Trust says it shouldn’t be as you can easily make children safer and ensure your own peace of mind by taking the following pre- cautions. Before they leave the house, impress on them that they must stay with their friends and never wander off alone, even if it is to come home. Discuss with them which route they will be taking, which houses they can visit and when they need to be back. Make it clear that they should never enter any- one’s house – even those of people who they know, unless they have arranged it with you previously or they clear it on the telephone with you first. The same goes for accepting lifts home in people’s cars. Explain to them that some people, especially the elderly, can get frightened or annoyed by Trick or Treating so it’s best to only visit peo- ple they know will enjoy it and if people don’t come to the door then they should move on to their next visit. If possible, ensure they have a mobile phone with them and that they ring home at regular intervals – and make sure they have a watch Trick or Treat? Young ghouls on their Hallowe’en rounds. with them so they can’t lose track of the time. Be careful when making their costume. If they are going to be carrying a turnip or pumpkin lantern, then make sure that their cos- tume is flame-retardant and that it doesn’t restrict their movement. It is a good idea to put reflective tape on their costume to make them clearly visible when cross- ing roads. Also, think about using face paints instead of a mask as some masks can stop the wearer seeing easily, which could be dangerous in traffic. Finally, if you are not happy about your chil- dren Trick or Treating but don’t want them to miss out, why not hold your own party – with fancy dress, bobbing for apples, doughnuts on strings and all the other fun and games of Hallowe’en?
