Dear Rotary Club of Calgary Sarcee Members;

Every year, approximately 110 children are diagnosed with cancer in Alberta. The Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta (KCC)

welcomes these brave families, ensuring that no family, no child, is left to fight this battle alone. KCC is dedicated to fighting

childhood cancer on all fronts and provides funding and programs in four areas; camp, childhood cancer research, hospital

programs and scholarships.

We have an incredible opportunity for the Rotary Club of Calgary Sarcee to support kids affected by cancer and celebrate your

generous role of giving back to the community. With funds raised from the Art from the Heart fundraiser, we propose $20,000 be

invested in the 2012 video and the remainder be directed towards renovations at Camp Kindle.

To educate the community about the impact of childhood cancer and our response to it, we produce an annual video. This moving

portrayal of the families as cancer takes over their lives is both heart-warming and heartbreaking. In five minutes, the video speaks

volumes about the importance of the programs and services of the Foundation. It is one of the best tools we have to communicate

our mission to others and we use it consistently throughout the year.

KCC’s camp programs offer young people across Alberta a chance to escape the rigours of cancer treatment for days of fun-filled

adventure with kids their own age. After months of bed-ridden isolation, children at camp soon discover they are not alone in their

struggles. Plans are underway to customize Camp Kindle to meet the specialized needs of children with cancer. There is an

opportunity for you to create a legacy and become a key builder of Camp Kindle, a special healing place for children with cancer.

On behalf of the children at the heart of our Foundation, thank you for your consideration of this proposal. If you need any

additional information, I would be pleased to meet you and discuss this opportunity further. I can be reached at (403) 984-6208 or

[email protected].

Sincerely,

Ashlee Guise

Community Initiatives Coordinator

Building community support and awareness through

cancer diagnosis has on a child to potential donors;

The video is used extensively for fundraising

purposes, is shown at all KCC signature events, as

well as community initiatives and school

presentations;

The video is shown on hundreds of occasions for

one full year and then intermittently in the future for

various events;

Last year, over 27,000 people visited the KCC

website and 460 people viewed the video online

Meet Karlee & Danielle, stars of the 2012 video

The 2012 KCC video showcases Karlee Lewis and Danielle

Rettie. Two young woman who’ve been through more hardships

than most adults in a lifetime.

At just three years old, Karlee was diagnosed with Acute

Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). In just one moment, life was

turned upside down as the Lewis family began the fight for

Karlee’s life.

Danielle Rettie was just 15 months old when first diagnosed with

cancer. She was diagnosed with astrocytoma, a central nervous

system tumour, which normally occurs in the brain but, in Danielle,

appeared in her spine. Her parents and doctors feared that the

first spinal cord surgery would leave Danielle paralyzed for life, but

through regular physiotherapy, swimming and a large measure of

love and encouragement, Danielle has learned to walk twice in her

lifetime and overcome incredible odds.

The 2012 video takes us into the lives of these two different

families at two different stages of the cancer journey, yet share

one common thing; Kids Cancer Care. The video takes us inside

these girls lives and captures the amazing hope and courage

these children demonstrate.

Background

KCC has been providing camp programs for kids since 1991. Our primary location

for these camps has been Camp Horizon which is owned and operated by Easter

Seals.

This rental arrangement has worked but there were aspects that hindered the

capacity and quality of the programs offered by KCC.

For the past five years, the KCC board of directors and staff have been

investigating the possibility of owning our own camp.

When it was determined that to build our own camp would be financially unfeasible

-- costing close to $20 million--we began to pursue other options.

In 2009, we were presented with an attractive alternative when Silver Creek Guest

Ranch became available for sale.

After a careful assessment of the property and the long-term impact on our

organization, our board of directors chose to pursue this exciting opportunity.

Current Situation

KCC purchased the property on February 25, 2009 and took possession August

28, 2009. The property was renamed Camp Kindle.

Make the Dream Come True

Purchase Price

The funds will cover the purchase of the 160-acre site with the existing buildings for $2.2 million. A mortgage was necessary to complete the purchase so campaign funds will cover the cost of the camp purchase.

Renovations

Renovations to many of the existing buildings and the camp roadways and infrastructure are required to bring them into compliance with existing building codes, to enable accessibility for people with disabilities and ensure hygienic environments for sick kids. The cost of making the upgrades is estimated at $1 million.

New Facilities

Several aging buildings need to be replaced and we need to add a small medical clinic. The cost of these new facilities is estimated to be $4.1 million.

Recreation

Several installations are required to make the camp a challenging adventure for children, including a swimming pool, a ropes course and a climbing wall. We estimate the cost of these new facilities to be $.7 million.

All the existing programs operated by KCC will continue to be funded during the time of the capital campaign, requiring new funds to be raised to make these changes to Camp Kindle.

We have embarked on a $8 million capital campaign for Camp Kindle.

Your financial assistance can make the dreams of children with cancer come true.
