About Dubai Leadership Live (working title)

Developing the next generation of leaders is seen as a strategic challenge of national importance in theUnited Arab Emirates of late (Sage, 2017.) However, the situation is both complex and uncertain.

We will explore this challenge through the lens of ‘wicked problems.’ The concept of wicked problemswas articulated by Churchman in 1967 and Rittel and Webber in 1973. Wicked problems areunstructured, cross-cutting, overlapping and relentless and both politically and socially constructed.

The UAE was, 40 years ago, a fisherman's settlement and has since rapidly grown its GDP. This growthhas brought political, societal and leadership demands which are being explored now more closely thanever.

Sarah Jones would like to introduce an initiative of empowering and motivating diverse backgrounds, particularly women in leadership, through a programme of hands-on action-focused workshopsexploring leadership concepts with young people, women leaders and rising management hires. Over aperiod of a few days, Sarah Jones and a local team of experts will share their leadership practice.

Over 2 days, participants will build their capacity in self-awareness, assertiveness, management, teamdynamics, leadership and mindset growth. Delivered in partnership with local Universities, businessesand entrepreneurs the event boasts a vibrant platform which will showcase emerging leadershipinitiatives, unusual suspects in UAE leadership and position Dubai as a powerhouse market fordeveloping ripe talent in its international position between East and West.

This prestigious event will take place at Dubai International Chamber of Commerce with an exclusiveevening reception hosted graciously by the British Embassy.

Context/Situational Analysis Developing the next generation of leaders is seen as a strategic challenge of national importance in the United Arab Emirates of late (Sage, 2017.) However, the situation is both complex and uncertain. We will explore this challenge through the lens of ‘wicked problems.’ The concept of wicked problems was articulated by Churchman in 1967 and Rittel and Webber in 1973. Wicked problems are unstructured, cross-cutting, overlapping and relentless and both politically and socially constructed. The UAE was, 40 years ago, a fisherman’s settlement and has since rapidly grown its GDP. This growth has brought political, societal and leadership demands which are being explored now more closely than ever. The UAE has a population of approximately 9 million people, of which 16% are locals. In 2017 Mathias identified concerns about the values of the next generation of UAE leaders. Current leaders for instance view the younger generation as holding individualistic values that are in conflict with the collective orientation required of good service in betterment of the country and its prospects. Young Emiratis are conditioned by a generous welfare state, high financial expectations and rapid promotion. The Mathias study also uncovered that those in middle management roles tend to be micro leaders and not ‘macro leaders.’ The UAE is committed to a strategy of localisation, replacing foreign workers with more nationals. Time-limited formal learning programs are the most common method of leadership development in the region. The Government of Dubai recognises that there has been too much of a focus on technical skill development and not enough focus on values and behaviours. There are also concerns around building leaders focused on ‘brand image’ rather than a more collectivist approach. (Al Dabbagh and Assad 2010.) Most programs remain classroom based and very few include experiential trips or learning or expert seminars. A survey by Adam Bradford Associates (2018) discovered that many young people, women and non-traditional recruiters have trouble both identifying and developing leadership skills in their employees and managers. 2. Project Description Sarah Jones would like to introduce the initiative through a programme of hands-on action-focused workshops exploring leadership concepts with young people, women leaders and rising management hires. Over a period of a few days, Sarah Jones and a local team of experts will share their leadership practice.
