Who We Are
Girls on the Run® is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. Our 10-week curriculum offered in the fall and spring is a physical activity, positive youth development program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade. The goals of the program are to develop and improve competence, unleash confidence through accomplishment, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care and compassion, create positive connections with peers and adults and make a meaningful contribution to community, all while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.
What We Do
At Girls on the Run we inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained volunteer coaches lead small teams of 8-20 girls twice a week through our research-based curricula, which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Girls in 3rd to 8th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k event.
Why are we seeking funding?
Girls on the Run South Louisiana has the capacity to serve girls in 18 parishes of Louisiana. Over 55% of our girls are in need of financial subsidy to be able to participate in our transformational program. The program cost is $185. Participants may request financial assistance based on a sliding income scale. More than 75% of girls requesting assistance request the highest need ($25 fee for 10-week, 20-lesson curriculum) No girl is ever turned away. By supporting Girls on the Run SOLA, you will help more girls in the South Louisiana community be able to enroll and participate in this incredible experience. Your support helps fund and expand our program!
Girls on the Run South Louisiana serves: East Baton Rouge, Ascension, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, West Baton Rouge, West Feliciana, Acadia, Iberia, Lafayette, St.
Landry, St. Martin, Vermillion, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa & Washington.
Girls on the Run has served over 1.5 million girls since it was founded in 1996. Over 200,000 girls in all 50 states experience the
power of our transformational program every school year.
Girls on the Run South Louisiana started in 2009. 10,100+ girls served in council’s history. 1000 served annually at 40+ sites.
More than 55% of participants request financial assistance to participate in the program.
INNOVATIVE AND DISTINCT
EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACH
Girls on the Run was recognized in Harvard University’s 2017 report Navigating SEL from the Inside Out for its innovative and distinct approach to social emotional learning.
Girls on the Run was one of only three afterschool programs recognized as a top research-based social
emotional learning program, acknowledging that there are few examples of evidence-based programs like Girls on the Run that have been specifically designed for out-of-school time contexts.
Why it matters
• Girls’ self-confidence begins to drop by age 9 • 50% of girls ages 10 to 13 experience
bullying such as name calling and exclusion • Physical activity levels decline at age 10 and continue to decrease throughout adolescence
What we do
Using 10-week intentional curriculum that integrates physical activity, our
trained coaches teach girls critical life skills and strategies they can apply to
all aspects of their lives.
