Career & Literacy CourseThis course is designed to give scholars the opportunity to examine their post-secondary options based on their aptitudes, skills and interests. Scholars learn about decision making in regards to academic and personal goal setting while designing action plans to achieve their personal and professional goals after Equality. As part of our preparation for Career Day and the College Fair, we study career opportunities, read stories and interviews from real people, and conduct career assessments so scholars are better educated about career choices and paths.

Career DayAll scholars at Equality Charter School attend an annual Career Day (January 19, 2018) with presenters from over 50 different careers represented. Our scholars learn about the pathways that each individual took to reach his/her goals, including obstacles and challenges encountered. This day is crucial to introduce our scholars to professionals across a range of fields while providing them with the opportunity to explore their own interests.

College FairWe have over 30 different colleges from the tri-state area and over 500 students from the five boroughs at our in-house Annual College Fair (March 15, 2018). Our scholars impress the college representatives after being thoroughly prepared in our Career and Literacy classes. This opportunity gives our scholars the head start they need in order to make sound decisions toward a college major and a fulfilling career in the future.

Peer 2 Peer Tutoring (P2P)Tutors for Equality’s P2P program are scholars in the 10th and 11th grades who excel academically, have strong emotional intelligence, and are motivated by a desire to help other scholars improve. The student tutors are officially hired by Equality Charter School and go through the process of applying and interviewing for a job, onboarding, and getting their first work experience within the safety of Equality’s environment.

Our tutors work with other scholars during our academic support and enrichment sessions to provide support in English and Math. Tutors use instructional strategies to teach struggling scholars the respective content as well as organization and note taking skills in order to help increase understanding and achievement. Tutors are also responsible for observing their tutees, reviewing observation notes, and planning lessons and accommodations for their assigned tutees. The true strength in P2P is that scholars are able to connect with their peers in a way that is educational, friendly and supportive.

Internship and Paid Work ExperienceEquality’s 11th and 12th grade scholars have the opportunity to connect talent, education, and workforce development by participating in our internship and paid work experience programs in partnership with companies/organizations in a variety of fields, including but not limited to electrical engineering, education, and medical services. Scholars have a chance to explore their career interests, learn 21st century job skills, and develop positive work behaviors while also building relationships within their communities. They have a modified school schedule to accommodate their travel and work time during the week. The internship is accompanied by a year long seminar where scholars reflect upon their work experiences and discuss topics in career readiness.

AP Courses and College Credit Bearing ClassesEquality offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses and college credit bearing classes to its 11th and 12th grade scholars. Initially, AP courses are offered in Math and English.

Athletics/NCAAEquality Charter School was approved by the NCAA; they reviewed our course offerings and graduation requirements and determined we meet their required criteria. This means our scholar-athletes will be considered academically prepared and therefore eligible to apply to to any Division I or II college that is pursuing them with athletic interest. We already have four seniors starting the recruitment process and have a handful of juniors showing interest!
