DURHAM UNION SOCIETY SPONSORSHIP OPTIONS
Dear Prospective Sponsor,
I am writing to enquire whether your company might be interested in any of the sponsorship
opportunities available at the Durham Union Society for the forthcoming academic year. As the
largest, and most prestigious student society at Durham University, we can offer your company
unparalleled access to a large number of high-calibre potential graduate recruits.
Durham University is ranked one of the top universities in the country. Its Law Department is
consistently ranked second only to Oxford and Cambridge, and the History, Theology, English, and
Physics departments are amongst the best in the world. However, the University is divided into
departments and colleges which has meant that graduate recruiters who seek employees from
multiple disciplines struggle to gain maximum exposure across the University. This is where the
Durham Union Society provides unique access.
With almost 3,000 members, the Union consists of around one in three undergraduate students. The
Durham Union Society holds daily events, ranging from high profile debates and celebrity
addresses to large and small scale social events. Recent speakers include: Bertie Ahern, Professor
A.C. Grayling, Nick Clegg, Attorney General Dominic Grieve, David Miliband, Lord Robert
Winston and Tanni Grey-Thompson. The Union also runs a competitive debating squad which is
considered the second most successful in Europe. The Union’s diverse activities mean that it
transcends the University’s organisational structure. The Union is the University's largest internal
organisation and has unmatched access to students across departments and colleges. However, it is
only with the support of sponsors that we can continue to thrive.
Firms including: Clifford Chance, Slaughter and May, and Linklaters, regularly place adverts in our
professionally-produced publications, using them as an opportunity to advertise recruitment
presentations at Durham, vacation placements or just to promote their company brand. Companies
such as Grant Thornton have also sponsored our weekly Friday night debates. We have many
opportunities which enable organisations to take advantage of our widespread reach within the
university.
Please find attached a comprehensive overview of our sponsorship options for the academic year
2013/2014.
Thank you for taking the time to consider publicity and promotional opportunities with the Durham
Union Society.
Yours sincerely,
Suzi Green

ADVERTISING IN THE TERMCARD
The Termcard is the cornerstone of Union publicity and is the most popular method of advertising to our
members. The A5 Michaelmas, Epiphany, and Easter Termcards will be delivered to almost 3,000 members
in Durham; this includes a wide range of students in every college, undergraduates and postgraduates alike.
It is the main source of information about the Union Society, packed full of details about our debates,
addresses, and social events and is used by students for reference throughout term.
If you are interested in sponsoring us for the duration of the next year then we would like to offer you the
option of reserving a place in the term cards for all three terms in advance. Annual term card sponsorship
would come to £1,900 for three full-page adverts, which is a discount of £200 compared to placing the
adverts separately.
Two-termly Sponsorship Deal
If you would like to sponsor just the next two terms, we can offer a £50 discount, with a price of £1,350.

ADVERTISING IN THE FRESHERS’ BROCHURE
The Freshers’ Brochure is a glossy A4 publication introducing the Union Society to all new undergraduates
arriving at the University next year. It is sent out each year to 3000 students before they arrive in Durham.
The Freshers’ Brochure offers our potential new members, and their families, an insight into the history,
events and the running of the Union prior to their arrival at university.
The Freshers’ Brochure along with the Freshers’ Fair at the start of the Michaelmas term is our main
medium of attracting new members. We offer our resident members:
• The chance to hear, question and argue with national figures and celebrities.
• Use of club facilities, including our own bar 24 North Bailey Club, Reading Room and beer garden.
• Some of the biggest University-wide social events, from our Michaelmas and Epiphany Balls to our
famous Garden Party in the Easter
term.
• The opportunity to learn to debate and
speak with confidence in public.

CELEBRITY DEBATE SPONSORSHIP
The heart of Union life is our weekly Friday Night Debate
which attracts a distinguished line-up of speakers. It costs the Union Society around £800 to run each debate, so sponsorship
plays a vital role in making sure that these events go ahead. The Debating Chamber is almost always full (capacity ~300) and
sometimes overflowing during Michaelmas. Our debate publicity package includes, but is not limited to:
Corporate Branding on:
• The debate page in the Termcard, delivered to almost 3000
members across Durham.
• The A3 posters produced to advertise the debate, distributed
to all 18 colleges, the Union Society building and our bar.
• The order papers of the debate, handed to every audience
member.
• The debate page of our website www.dus.org.uk,
accompanied by a hyperlink.
Pre-Debate Presentation, given to all members who come to
watch the debate
Debate Dinner: four complimentary seats at the Black Tie pre-debate dinner and drinks where you can meet the speakers, students and officers of the Society and invitations to the Reading Room for post-debate drinks
with a larger pool of invited members from the debate and our guests.
Banner Display in the Durham Union Debating Chamber on the night of the debate.
Publicity Stand erected in the Union and the right to distribute promotional material on the day of the debate
or social event. Between the debate and the bar we estimate a turnover of 500 people per night.
Special Thanks and address, announced in the Chamber by the President and the option to deliver a 10 - 15
minute presentation to the audience before the debate commences.
Email Special Thanks, a recruitment message and a hyperlink in the Union’s weekly email newsletter “What’s On” and Facebook email, sent to over 3000 members. Our mailing list far exceeds that of any other
student society, and indeed any individual college. The Union offers what no one else can.

GRADUATE RECRUITMENT EVENTS
Throughout the year we hold graduate recruitment and networking events. In our chamber students are
invited to meet professionals from banks, advertising firms, Inns of Court and many more. We advertise the
evening well in advance and we expose your company name in the same way as we would at a debate.
These events can take many different forms, from networking and drinks in the chamber or our members’
bar, to a formal question and answer session. Numbers depend on the type of event. Stand-up networking
may well be the best option with a few score of students or a lecture may well work best with our chamber
at its 300 capacity. Whatever type of event you wish to hold we can help. Please do not hesitate to get in
touch if you have any questions.
Pricing: It costs £600 for exclusive sponsorship for a graduate
recruitment and networking event. Naturally, all options can be tailored to your specific requirements.
SOCIAL EVENTS
Corporate Logos on all tickets, posters, flyers and in the Termcard produced to advertise the event, distributed to colleges and central University and Union Society buildings and displayed for the first half of
the relevant term, as well as on the menus for the evening.
Email Special Thanks, a recruitment message and a hyperlink in the Union’s weekly email newsletter
“What’s On” and Facebook email, sent to over 3000 members.
Banner or Stand Display in the venue on the night of the event.
Distribution of promotional material at the event.
Special Thanks announced at the dinner by the President.

over 180 debaters from many different countries including Australia, the Philippines, and Canada. The two

SPONSORING OUR DEBATING SQUAD
An integral part of the Union is the competitive
debating that occurs in all three terms. We have some
of the best student speakers in the country and the
world. The Durham Union is ranked second in
Europe for debating and 11th
best in the world.
We attend over twenty UK competitions annually,
sending an average of six speakers and judges to each
competition.
2012-2013 we’ve been building on our competitive
successes, with teams in the semi-finals of the Oxford
IV and the Cambridge IV.
Our debaters have won notable competitions such as:
- Manchester IV
- BOGWALL (Scottish novices)
- Roosevelt Academy Open
- York IV
- Sheffield IV
- GUU Ancients (the oldest debating competition in
the World).
We have an established reputation on the international
circuit. This year in the World championships, for the
second year in a row, Simon Tunnicilffe and Ben Dory reached the Octo-finals.
Sponsoring our teams as they go around the country and the world will provide your
company with exposure at almost every University in the UK and associate it with one of
the best University teams. The Debating circuit is occupied by many of the brightest
students, most of whom are exactly the type you would want to recruit.
When you sponsor our debaters, publicity packages include, but are not limited to:
Corporate Logos and names on all competition related media. The teams may wear corporate T-Shirts or
hoodies at the competitions and workshops, and if you wish they can use corporate stationery. Your
company’s logo and name would also be included in a newsletter, which goes out to well over four
hundred Durham student debaters, the Durham Union Termcard, and through a hyperlink on our website.
Pricing: It costs £1500 for exclusive sponsorship of all our debating teams for one year. Naturally, all
options can be tailored to your specific requirements.

SPONSORING OUR DEBATERS - INTERNALLY
To maintain our position within University debating, we run an intensive programme of in house training
and competitions. Three internal competitions are held every year for all Union members. The three internal
competitions hosted by the Union are:
Each competition has a similar format with preliminary rounds spread over several weeks followed by a
final in which the top eight speakers take part. However, each competition has its own distinctive
atmosphere. The Novice Cup has well over one hundred participants every year and is accompanied by a
programme of workshops, which take place every Monday evening during term time. The competition
sponsorship would include sponsorship of the complimentary workshop sessions; these continue running
throughout the year except during the three-week examination period during Easter term.
Sponsorship of the Inter Collegiate Cup and the Robson Cup, the latter a competition to find the best
individual speaker in Durham, includes a free social, as there are no workshops.
Pricing: Please email the Sponsorship Secretary at [email protected] for further details and prices for
the individual competitions.

Social Media - £300
Using social media has been a very effective way at getting brands across to our
members.
This entails following companies on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
We will ‘share content’ via social media at least twice per term.
We will display logos and promote your events on our social networking sites.
We will display your logo on our website homepage: www.dus.org.uk and on our debating website.
We will provide two news stories if requested (of up to 250 words) per academic year e.g. a progress
update or event/match/competition report which your company can publish on Social Media at their
discretion.
We will send a recruitment message of 100 – 150 words in length which will be included in emails which
are sent out to the debating mailing list, twice a term.
Poster in Bar
For £500 we will place a company poster in our bar 24 North Bailey Club.
The bar at 24 is the centre of social life at the Union. It is popular among a variety of students, from small
groups having a quiet drink with their friends, to bar-crawlers and sports socials.
There is something on most nights of the week. Currently we have open mic on Sundays and themed
cocktails on Wednesdays which would give your brand further exposure.
- As part of this sponsorship deal we would put up a framed, A2 or A3 sized poster in our bar 24NBC. - It would remain there for the entire academic year.
