FORMULA STUDENT
In 1981 the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) organised the first Formula SAE as an American Uni-versity competition. The challenge the students are facing is to develop and construct a single-seat race car. In 1998 this concept was adopted in Europe with the FormulaStudent starting in Great Britain. Within the following years further international race tracks like Hocken-heim (GER) became part of that event. Momentarily, there are eleven official events worldwide in which about 550 Teams participate. The competition its-elf has developed over time. Since 2010 there is not only the category combustion but also a competition for electric powertrains. Students taking part in such competitions require broad knowledge. The challen-ging disciplines are split into static and dynamic ones. That means that on the one hand the race car’s per-formance is tested on different kinds of circuits and on the other hand the construction of the car has to be defended and presented in front of competent judges from the automotive industry.
DYNAMIC DISCIPLINES
AccelerationAcceleration on a straight distance of 75 metres with time measurement.
Skid PadSimilar to steady-state circular course driving, the par-cours looks like an eight and every circle has to be driven twice. Measurement takes place every second lap. This discipline requires good lateral acceleration data.
Auto CrossCourse with a length of approximately 1km, where the car has to prove its performance on straight lines as well as tide corners. The position of this discipline is relevant for the start ranking at endurance.
EnduranceVehicle has to finish the full distance of 22km, with a driver change after 11km. The whole construction of the car has to be inherently consistent (acceleration, hand-ling, suspension etc.) as well as the driver’s proficiency.
Fuel EfficiencyDuring the endurance race fuel consumption in relation to velocity is measured and scored.
STATIC DISCIPLINES
Design ReportDefending the development and construction process in front of judges in frame of a 45-minute discussion with diverse component responsible members.
Cost ReportRepresentation of cost efficiency of the race car in front of judges and defending the choice of materials and ma-nufacturing techniques. The cost report itself consists of an itemisation of every single component as well as the so called ‘Real Case’ with the solution for an Event specific task.
Business Plan PresentationPresentation of the business plan for a notional marke-ting concept comprising the real vehicle as a basis. Jud-ges should be treated as potential investors of a group. The presentation is limited to 10 minutes and 5 minutes of questions follow afterwards.
UPBRACING TEAM
Since its founding in 2006 the UPBracing Team has grown not only regarding technical progress of the vehi-cle and the corresponding know-how but also further to the number of its members. Having started with only seven foundation members in 2006 the team nowadaysconsists of about 200 active and passive members which have built up a huge network of knowledge. Due to the-se facts the university interest and public interest in our project have increased.
What characterises the UPBracing Team ever since is the passion every member has for this project. Whereas one member is fighting for every gram for weight reduction another member is refining the suspension setup and further members are managing public and teambuilding activities and organise Event participation. All of us are aiming at perfection. The vision of a progressively impro-ving race car keeps us focussed.
Our success proves us right: Since our foundation we could reduce the weight of our race car by about 100kg. Furthermore, motor performance has improved signifi-cantly and suspension setup could be optimised by me-ans of the development of a simulation model.

Especially the 10th place in Silverstone in the overall ranking, as well as the 5th place in the Skid Pad and the 8th place in the business presentation event in Spielberg in season of 2013 make us proud. Last season, we rea-ched second place in acceleration and 11th place in the overall ranking in Varano.

The PX215 consists of a one-piece monocoque, con-trasting to the two previous models, which were compo-sed of a hybrid construction of a CFRP monocoque and a steal-grid-pipe-rear-frame. By doing this, we could decrease the weight of the chassis by 10% and double the torsional stiffness at the same time. Concerning the areas motor and powertrain, the focus on the test bench
was put on optimising the weight and the motor controller. We managed to
decrease the overall weight of the mo-tor to less than 50kg by altering the gear shift drum, gearbox, crankshaft and oil lubrication. Additionally, we
could achieve remarkable results on the motor block and improve the torque
band.
Driveshafts could also be lowered in weight in compa-rison to the previous year, which now results in a re-duction of the unsprung mass. Here, improvements were achieved by the use of a wire-wrap technique and an optimisation of the layer structure.
TECHNOLOGY:OVERVIEW AND PROGRESS
Our team members have proved their courage and power by realising improvements related to the development and construction of the PX215. These improvements are directly visible at the front and rear wing. Underneath the trim, there are even more small and big innovations, which invite to discover our race car even further.
The goal of our efforts was a weight reduction and a better performance on track. For this purpose, every detail of the motor, suspension or chassis was questioned. In the fol-lowing, we would like to present a selection of the improvements. We have exploited the knowledge that we have acquired through the years in order to develop a concept that is modern and well-fitting to the new re-gulations of the season.
A noticeable feature of the PX215 is the aerodynamic package, consisting of the front wing, rear wing and dif-fusor. This package enables an optimal usability of the airstream, which occurs while driving, to press the race car on the track. This way it is possible to increase the downforce, which positively affects the grip of the tires. Simultaneously, we can specifically direct the flow to-wards the motor, oil- and watercooler.

FAIRS & EXHIBITIONS
Due to the fact that the UPBracing Team shows up on a number of fairs and exhibitions of companies every year, we also represent our sponsors in regular intervals to a regional, national and international audience. For example we were at the opening of the testing track Bilster Berg drive resort, at the SolidWorks launch days (at Coffee Solution GmbH), the Essen Motor Show or at the open days of the company dSpace. These are just a few examples for our presence at exhibitions at supporting companies. Furthermore, we are also present at the Essen Motor Show and the international reach is extraordinary at the Formula Student Events. Here are some further examples:

constant press releases. Consequently, your public awareness is going to increase which opens a range of new possibilities regarding advertisement potential. In addition to that, we present your name at the FormulaStudent events, where it will be recognised by an inter-national audience.
Next to these obvious advantages, the aspect of re-search and development perfectly fits entrepreneurship and should therefore also be taken into consideration.
You can already tell that an investment in our team is not only beneficial for your company and the recognition of its name. You will also profit in the future because of your access to young engineers and managers.
YOUR ADVANTAGES WITH THE
UPBRACING TEAM ON YOUR SIDE
Firstly, with us you are in contact with dedicated and resilient students which will make a career as engineers and/or managers after achieving their university degree. The UPBracing Team offers an excellent platform for the acquisition and transfer of knowledge with an extraor-dinary practical relevance. Besides, it is worth mentio-ning that numerous team members have written their dissertations in cooperation with our sponsors and part-ners. Additionally, many companies from the network of our supporters could make contact with each other and extract advantages from promising cooperation.
We are in the fortunate position to provide a steadily growing network consisting of regional, national and international industry. Not least because of our annual sponsoring events we offer exceptional opportunities for such encounters. Furthermore, we are not only ableto come up with event and user reports but also with

IMPRESSIONS
The students can touch their own desig-ned and produced parts, next to the theority studies, so they have to deal with a realisitc project. That is the most important result of
the Formula Student series.
