GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

• The DEADLINE to PREORDER your 2018 YEARBOOK is Friday, March 30 @ SNACK. Save money and guarantee you get a book when they arrive at the end of the school year! The price goes up after the preorder deadline. All purchases made through the student store.

• Seniors: GRAD NITE Guest Passes are now available in the Assistant Principal's Office, due by Friday,

March 30 at 1:00pm. All students purchasing tickets with a guest pass must buy the tickets at the Student Store.

• If you took the AMC 10 or AMC 12 (American Mathematics Competition) your scores are in! Stop by room 7308 before school, at snack or lunch to check out how you did. Congratulations to senior William Jeon who had the top score out of CV students on the AMC 12 and to juniors Edan Bash and Nicolas Suter who tied for second. Steven Yu, a sophomore, earned the top score for the AMC 10 followed by sophomore Minju Kang and freshman Prashanth Bhaskara. Great job to all who participated!

• ~ Community Service Opportunity~ The City of Glendale Student Ambassador Program is a volunteer program through the City Clerk’s Office. It gives students the opportunity to be trained on the agendas and proceedings of City Council Meetings, and to act as representatives, welcoming new attendees, explaining the agendas, and answering any other questions pertaining to the Council Meetings. The Ambassadors will help the City Clerk’s Office reach out to, and inform, the community about meeting protocol and decorum, and will act as liaisons between City Hall and our community. • Congratulations to Cinema students Emma Kupershmidt, Austin Marks, Paul Rosette, and Justin Wang. Their

short film "The Driver" has been chosen as an Official Selection by the Los Angeles Film Awards. The film will be screened as a part of the 2018 film festival.

• Attention Students: Please drive carefully and be respectful of our neighbors. Please do not block driveways or move trash bins to park. It is important not to litter and clean up after ourselves. Falcon Pride!

• Students please remember the basic rules of street-crossing: stop at the corner and look both ways, be aware of your surroundings. Our intersections are not for diagonal crossing. Be safe.

• Would you like to be in the most dynamic class on the CV campus? Yearbook is full of opportunity and experience. Writing, photography, design and more are just a few of things you will become expert in. Applications are located on the cvhsfalcons.com website under activities then yearbook. The deadline has been extended to Friday, March 30. So don’t miss out - there are cupcakes in your future!!!

• Journeys Magazine submissions are due by Saturday, March 31! Send in your literary and arts submissions to [email protected] with your name student ID, grade, and title of your work.

• ~SENIORS COMMUNITY SERVICE REMINDER~ Spring Break is coming! Look through your backpacks, your locker, your cars and your room for any Form C's that have been lost or forgotten. The deadline for Senior Community Service forms is Monday, April 30. Questions, concerns, email Mrs. Gay at [email protected]. This deadline applies to the Class of 2018 only.

• Attention 9th-11th graders: The CV Tech Team is looking for responsible students interested in technology to join next year. Tech team members receive Career Prep credit. Pick up an application in the Counseling Office, if interested. For more information, stop by room 1306 at snack.

• ~Community Service Opportunity~ The Montrose Library is the recipient of a grant and would like teens to come and give their ideas and opinions about what our community needs. Right now the grant is the “community conversation” stage. This is where the grant team is going out to high schools, teen organizations, and individuals to ask: What kind of community do you want to live in? The first volunteer project will be Operation Paperback where teens will help create care packets of donated books that will be sent to military families across the country. Interested? • Attention all Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors: The Verdugo Creative Technologies Consortium and GCC are hosting a “Saturday Academy” program. The purpose of the Saturday Academy is to motivate and prepare high school and community college students for careers in the high-growth creative, entertainment, and technology industry sectors. • Want to have fun roller skating with friends? Come to the Armenian Club social today, March 19, from 1:30pm-4:00pm at Moonlight Rollerway.

• Beatboxing Club is now changed to every Thursday, at lunch, in room 5208. Come bring lunch, a friend, and a water bottle. No experience needed.

• Students who would be interested in learning more about tobacco, e-cigarettes and hookah smoking and how

it affects your health, there is a TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention and Education) program meeting every Tuesday lunch in room 1106. All are welcome, pizza provided.

• SENIORS: GCC Field Trip - If you signed up for the April 10 GCC field trip, you must attend the lunchtime workshop in the CV Library, Thursday, March 29. You will receive your field trip permission slip at the workshop. The workshop is mandatory. Questions? See Counselor.

• Junior Boys: The American Legion Post 288 is looking for students interested in attending BOYS STATE, a

program similar to Youth and Government. Boys spend one week in Sacramento in a mock local, county, and state government learning the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of citizens. Interviews will be held Saturday, April 14. Selected candidates will have an all-expense paid trip to Sacramento, June 16-23. Please see Mrs. Bomar in the Counseling Office or email [email protected] if you are interested in applying.

• Ladies: Dream It, Be It. Dream It, Be It is a global career support program dedicated to helping girls grow up to be strong, successful, happy adults. The program is offered to high school girls by Soroptimist International of Glendale. The one-day conference will take place on April 28, 2018 at the Glendale YWCA, located at 735 East Lexington Drive, Glendale 91206 from 8:30am to 3:30pm with refreshments and lunch provided but you must register by April 14. • Are you 18 and interested in careers in healthcare? Then you’re in luck. Healthcare careers are in demand and the Verdugo Jobs Center is offering Care Coordination Training. This training will enhance your chances of finding employment and will look very impressive on a resume. The cost of the program is $1500, but students can enroll for FREE with the Verdugo Jobs Center. The class will run from Saturday, March 17 until Saturday, April 28 (7 Saturday sessions), from 9:00am–3:30pm. You can find more details on the flyers posted outside the Counseling Office.

• College Bound Juniors should register for the spring SAT or ACT so you will have scores available when researching "best fit" colleges/universities. Remember the essay portion is required for the University of California campuses and several private schools. When registering, take advantage of the 4 score reports included in the registration fees to avoid having to pay more later on. SAT subject tests are not required by UC or CSU but students should check other out of state or private college requirements, as needed.

• Ladies: Are you interested in learning about programming, electromechanical and environmental

engineering and design? Are you interested in designing and building robotic weather station and air pollution sensor? Glendale Community College is offering a Makerspace Summer Academy for our female students from June 18-July 12. Students will earn one college unit for Engr 49 (Engineering Independent Study). • Students, your opinion matters. What kind of community would you like to live in? Montrose Library is starting the Small Steps Project and looking for input from teenagers to express the type of community they want to live in. La Crescenta Elementary School Foundation has renewed their commitment to award scholarships to 2018 CV grads who formerly attended La Crescenta (min. of 3 years). Students must have satisfactory academic achievement with plans to enter a 4-year college in the fall. Applications are available from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration office. Deadline is March 30, 2018.

Lincoln Elementary Scholarship – open to graduating high school seniors who previously attended Lincoln Elementary (preference given to students who attended Lincoln K-6). Applications are available from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration office or on Lincoln’s website – https://www.gusd.net/lincoln. Deadline to apply is March 30, 2018

Monte Vista Elementary Scholarship - award open to graduating seniors who attended Monte Vista Elementary for at least 3 years. Students must have participated in extra-curricular activities, community service and/or work experience and have satisfactory academic achievement. Mountain Avenue Elementary MACK Scholarship - open to graduating seniors who attended Mountain Avenue for a min. of three years. Students must be enrolling in a 4-year college in the fall and have participated in extra-curricular activities and/or community service. Dunsmore Elmentary School Foundation Scholarship – open to graduating seniors who attended Dunsmore Elementary for a min. of 3 years, have satisfactory academic achievement and plan to enrolled in post-secondary education in the fall. Fremont Elementary School - is offering 3 different scholarships (Bear / STEM or Arts Awards). Students must have attended Fremont for a min. of 3 years and have satisfactory academic achievement. Taiwanese American Scholarship Fund offering (10) - $5000 scholarships to help economically-challenged Taiwanese American youth fulfill their dreams of obtaining high education. Applicants must show financial need, have a min. 3.0 GPA, be a US citizen or permanent resident and be a direct blood descendent of a Taiwanese citizen. Application and additional information is available at www.TAScholarshipFund.org and deadline to apply is March 28, 2018. Royal Business Bank Scholarship Program is offering (20) $1000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning to attend a 4-year college as a full-time student in the fall. The scholarships are open to ALL seniors (no ethnicity requirement) with a min. 3.0 GPA and demonstrated financial need. Application and additional information is available at http://apcf.org/2018-royal-business-bank-scholarship-program and deadline to apply is March 28, 2018 Glendale Chapter, CSEA (CA School Employees Association) Scholarships – organization is offering (2) $1000 scholarships awarded to graduating seniors who will continue their education in a Vocational Trade such as police, fire, nursing, tradesman, etc. One of the awards will go to a direct dependent of a CSEA Glendale Chapter 3 member (parent currently works for Glendale Unified School

American Postal Works Union (APWU) - is offering (10) $2000 academic and (5) $3000 vocational scholarships to children or grandchildren of a current or retired APWU member. The Hallbeck Academic scholarship is for use at an accredited college or university. The vocational scholarship is to be used for three years of study in a specific trade, technical, industrial or vocational school. Application and information is available at http://www.apwu.org/pay-benefits#Scholarships Deadline is March 31, 2018 Kim & Harold Louie Family Foundation - this scholarship is for high school seniors attending college in 2018-19 academic year. Applicants should have demonstrated outstanding personal achievements, academic merit, leadership qualities and/or community service. In addition, students must have a min. 3.5 (on 4.0 scale) GPA and SAT score of 1200 (out of 1600) or 1800 (out of 2400) or ACT score of 25. La Canada La Crescenta-AM Kiwanis Club – offers scholarship awards in 4 different categories – Deadline to apply is April 13, 2018 and you can pick up a copy of the application from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration Office. The awards they offer are:

Kiwanis Scholarship - open to ALL seniors who are active in extracurricular activities Key Club Scholarship - open to graduating seniors with a min. 3-year membership in Key Club who also held an officer

position in the club JROTC Scholarship - open to graduating seniors enrolled in their 3rd or 4th year of ROTC who also held an officer position Scouting Scholarship - open to graduating seniors who have earned the rank of EAGLE or GOLD scout

Student Insights is again sponsoring the 2018 Student-View Scholarship Program which offers $11,000 worth of scholarships to high school seniors who plan to attend a 4-yr/2-yr college or career school in the fall. Student Insights is a marking research firm helping colleges and universities communicate more effectively with high school seniors. To compete for the scholarship awards, students log on to www.student-view.com and complete a 15-20 minute application survey about colleges in your area. Deadline is April 22, 2018.

Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) scholarship program is designed to offer local government and planning experience that students can use to develop long-term career goals. Scholarship applicants must have a min. 3.0 GPA, submit a 500-word essay and intend to pursue a college major in urban planning, environmental planning, engineering and/or political science. AMVETS (American Veterans) is the nation’s most inclusive Congressionally-chartered veterans service organization. This organization will be offering two scholarships specific to children/grandchildren of Veterans, Active Duty, Guard/Reserves who are current high school seniors graduating in 2018. The application process and additional information is available online at www.AMVETS.org/scholarship. Deadline to apply is April 30, 2018

Community Scholarship Foundation of La Canada Flintridge, Inc. – offering scholarships to graduating seniors attending any high school within the city of La Canada Flintridge and including Crescenta Valley HS. Applications must have a min. 3.0 GPA, be U.S. citizen. Recipients are selected based on various factors including triumph over an obstacle, hardship or extenuating circumstances, financial need, community service, future promise and academic achievement. Scholarship award can be used at either a 4-yr/2-yr college/university, or trade/technical school. Applications are available from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration office or online at www.csflacanada.org Deadline is April 30, 2018.

The Canada Auxiliary of Professionals of Assistance League of Flintridge – is offering $2000 scholarships to graduating seniors from CVHS who will be continuing their higher education at a 2-year college or accredited occupational program. Interested students must have a min. 2.5 GPA and prepare a one-page essay addressing your career goals, achievements, and activities. Applications are available from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration Office and deadline to apply is May 4, 2018

CTE – Career & Technical Education Scholarship – sponsored by the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation – is offering awards to graduating seniors planning to attend a non-degree certificate or vocational training program that is 12 months or less at a community college or private career school. Applicants must be a child of either an (1) active duty or reserve U.S. Marine, (2) Veteran U.S. Marine who has received an honorable discharge, (3) an active duty or reserve U.S. Navy Corpsman who is serving, or has served, with a U.S. Marine unit or(4) Veteran U.S. Navy Corpsman who served with a U.S. Marine unit. Applicants must also have a min. 2.0 GPA. Additional information and application are available online at https://www.mcsf.org/cte. Applications are open year round and accepted on a rolling basis.

2018 Aspiring Nurse Scholarship - is a $1000 scholarship sponsored by the Nursing Schools Almanac. Award granted to a graduating senior with a track record of academic excellence, particularly in science and math as well as a passion to pursue a nursing profession. GEF Summer School is offering a wide selection of classes for advancement at Crescenta Valley and Glendale High Schools from June 11 to July 13, 5 days a week. All classes are academic in nature and full credit will be given. Tuition is charged for these classes.

REGISTRATION 5 CREDITS per semester. A student must take BOTH semesters to count toward a year-long 10 CREDIT course. ONLY students needing to remediate/repeat a D or F semester grade may take one semester of a year-long course. No refunds given after classes begin.

Tuition: $570 for a year-long, 10 unit class $285 for a semester long, 5 unit class Tuition reduction for students participating in the Federal Lunch Program: $470 for a year-long class $235 for a semester class If class specifies a lab fee, include that amount with payment. Classes filled on a first come, first served basis.

COUNSELOR VERIFICATION: Name BEHAVIOR & STUDENT CONDUCT—Rules, policies and procedures are available online www.gefsummerschool.org My student and I understand that my student is required to abide by GEF Summer School rules, policies (available on the summer school website: www.gefsummerschool.org) as well as the laws for student behavior according to California Education Code. Failure to comply with the above mentioned rules for student behavior/conduct may result in the dismissal of my student from the GEF Summer School with no refund. Drop Policy: Students who drop summer school must fill out a drop slip before the end of the semester. Drop slips are located at the desk of the GEF Summer School Registrar, and on the GEF Summer School website, www.gefsummerschool.org. Parent and student signatures are required. Textbooks must be returned. No refund is given. This action is final. Transcript Policy: GUSD students may elect to have their summer school grade not appear on their home school transcript. This will mean that the class taken may not be considered ‘completed,’ no credit will be given, and it may not be used as a prerequisite for any sequence of classes. Withhold Grade form must be returned to the GEFSS office by July 19, 2018, 1:00 p.m. This action is final.
