The Sussex Academy Foundation is delighted to announce the return of a Hot Air Balloon Festival to Sussex County, Delaware on Friday and Saturday, September 14 and 15, 2019 at the Delaware Coastal Business Park/Airport, Georgetown.

In 1990, Dr. and Mrs. Charles Wagner launched the first Delmarva Hot Air Balloon & Craft Festival in Milton, DE. Charles and Patt Wagner owned a hot air balloon and had attended the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Festival. Their love of ballooning, their experience at the Albuquerque Festival, and their desire to raise funds for the American Diabetes Association, where Patt was working as a diabetic educator and held a position on the Board of Directors, were the reasons behind Sussex County’s first hot air balloon festival. The festival was held at the H.O. Brittingham school grounds as well as on their own private property adjacent to the school. The area was filled with vendors, crafters, rides, and games and the skies were awash with many colorful balloons. The popular event was well attended and continued for 13 years, raising money for the American Diabetes Association and later for the Historic Milton Theatre.

In 2019, The Sussex Academy Foundation contracted with Friendship Hot Air Balloon Company to bring back a Hot Air Balloon Festival to Sussex County, DE. Balloons Over Sussex will be held at the Delaware Coastal Business Park/Airport from 2pm - 8pm on Saturday, September 14, 2019 and from 2pm - 7pm on Sunday, September 15, 2019. The event will feature hot air balloon rides, tethered balloon rides, a balloon walk -about, a balloon glow, kids zone, crafters, food vendors, and entertainment.

The Sussex Academy Foundation serves as the fundraising entity for Sussex Academy. Sussex Academy is a public charter, tuition free, school that serves grades 6-12. Centrally located in Georgetown, Delaware, Sussex Academy is open to all students in Delaware. The money raised from Balloons Over Sussex will be applied to building improvements that are necessary to accommodate both middle school and high school students.

TRASH COLLECTION We are in need of a trash company to supply trash cans for the festival and empty them during and at the conclusion of the event each day.

SPECIAL SHAPE BALLOONS The sponsorship amount for a special balloon is $5,000. The balloons will remain on the ground during the festival and will be in the air for the balloon glow.
