Let New India arise outof the peasant~' cottage,

grasping the plough: out of thehuts of the fishermen, the cobbler and the sweeper.

Let her spring from the grocer'sShop, from beside the oven ofThe fritter - seller.

Let her emanate from thefactory, from marts and from makets.

Let her emerge from groves and forests, fromHills and mountains!-Swami Vivekananda

This childcouldhavebeenyoursbut foramereaccidentofbirth. HeisTegungSeiju,a ISolung' child from a remote corner oftheEast Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh. Solungs are a tribe among whom no student has, as yet, passed the High schoola community whose entire life isspent in poverty and back -breaking labour, doing menialjobs for others. Nowonder, Tegung'sparents could not dream oftheir child leaving his environs, entering a residential schoolor ultimately becoming someone differentin life till Kendra - teachers came and selected him as a hostelier in the Vivekananda KendraVidyalaya (VKV). Now Kendra meets the entire personal expenses of Tegung - clothes, shoes, bedding, mosquito -net, notebooks, stationery and scores ofother little things that he needs for hisdaily lifeand which the schoolcannot provide from the grants...Then there isBageli Manyu, a Mishmi girl from the interior Hayuliang where the villager's onlyway oflivelihood isan occasional crop - opium (poppy) fieldscover the hills for the rest ofthe year;where the people are physically and nutritionally starved most ofthe year -places which are fivetosix days of footmarch from the nearest town, in the best, dry winter - weather. Bageli's parentsshudder at the thought ofsending their girIsto a distant school, asshe comeswith a pleading lookand holding a bag ofold books....

Akhu Wangpan is a bright teenager from Tirap district; He is of the Wanchoo tribe, one of the most backward communitiesaddicted to the shifting (slash-and-burn)' Jhum' cultivation.

This leavesAkhu' s parents with barren, burnt hill- slopes over which they can hardly grow anything for more than two or threemonths. They would rather expectAkhu to lead them a helping hand onthe land, rather than spend his longhours inschooL..Tegung, Bageli and Akhu are students in the Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalayas in Arunachal Pradesh. There are many more likethem..And stillmany more who have not been able to continue inthe schools, due to their abject poverty.

So that Bageli could have an education that would ensure women equal social status, economicindependence and scope to develop expertise infields ranging from social work to ComputerEngineering.

Wewish we could extend to them a ray of hope -with YOURASSISTANCE, naturally. Toenable themto have a man -making education, ennobled by the inspiring ideals of Swami Vivekananda. So thatTegung could get educated to free himself and his family from perpetual slavery and social subjugation.

Sothat Akhu would learn to lead his society from the evilsof opium ofJhumming to the blessings ofliving inharmony withNature. There are many more such examples who have been helped by the goodness ofpeople likeyou. Here is sample ofthree deservingchildren on the waiting list.
