14. fund a need

hoWell mountain elementary School—muSic educationhowell mountain school would like to have instrumental music instruction two times a week as part of our academic program, grades 5–8. We purchased woodwind and brass instruments from last year’s auction and were able to offer one day of band instruction. howell mountain school wants to expand our program and we have two wonderful local musicians who are interested in helping us build a dynamic music program at our school. research shows music education prepares students to learn, facilitates student academic achievement, and develops the creative capacities for lifelong success. music facilitates learning other subjects and enhances skills that children inevitably use in other areas and is found to have a positive effect on language development, an increased iQ, spatial temporal skills, and overall the brain works harder when learning the skills required for music. (Cutietta, hamann, Walker, 1995 & rauscher, 1996). having an instrumental music program, grades 5–8, gives our school an additional opportunity to engage students and maximize their learning experience! this amazing opportunity carries a cost. thanks to previous efforts of this founda-tion and its generous donors, we now have woodwind and brass instruments so we are ready to expand instrumental music instructional minutes and hopefully add keyboard sections.

in order to see this goal met, we need funds to cover music instruction, instrument repair and the purchase of keyboards for our school, which we estimate will cost $15,000! our hope is that we can open our doors on august 17th and have choral music instruction for every child, K–4, instrumental music available to our students, grades 5-8!

Thank you for supporting and funding this need!
