In 1940 the German Nazi government occupied Denmark but kept peace with the country. In 1943, however, the Nazis decided to deport Danish Jews to concentration camps. Many of the non-Jewish Danes banded together and helped 7,000 of their Jewish neighbors escape to Sweden and safety.
