THANK YOU STUDENTS! It took an army (actually, our whole school) to plan and organize this annual event, and SHP wanted to shout out THANKS to all of our special students who volunteered with their departments. It couldn’t have been possible without our students — so thank you and hooray to all who volunteered before, during and after the FunD Run! A big shout out and thank you also, to Michelle Conley who planned and implemented this awesome fundraising event! Great Job!

PT Faculty, I know that you know how very awesome your Students are. Yet, I must send this extra Shout-Out. The students pictured here volunteered their time (I understand they had just taken a big exam) to help at the ECI LAUNCH Holiday party. They staffed the craft, sensory and food tables, and sparkled with their clever hats and smiles. Their presence made it possible for the ECI LAUNCH staff to spend more time visiting with their children and families. Thanks to Dr. Farroni for making this possible. Virginia Niebuhr, PhD Pediatrics
ECI is the Galveston County Early Childhood Intervention Program that is part of the department of Pediatrics. They provide therapy services to children 0-3 in their homes.

On behalf of DPT c/o 2017, class officers presented the Pasadena Memorial Disabled Veterans Association Chapter 194 with a donation of over $2,000 to help local veterans with disabilities. This chapter provides immense resources for veterans within the community, including home modifications, adaptive equipment, healthcare necessities, and weekly PTSD meetings. We are honored to partner with this organization and help support their future endeavors as they continue their service to this country. Please see attached photo from the donation presentation with 2017 officers, Commander Tom Barbee, and Sergeant at Arms Rudy Sladecek. Our current philanthropy for the 2015-2016 academic year is the Adaptive Sailing Center of Galveston. DPT students work closely with this organization, volunteering on a weekly basis to assist in the adaptive sailing classes. The Sailing Center recently won the Outstanding Adaptive Community Sailing Program award at the US Sailing Forum in San Diego, CA. We are thrilled for the opportunity to partner with them to help those within the Galveston community. Written by Charlotte Mata

Susie Dezelle, left, a second year occupational therapy student at the University of Texas Medical Branch, and Karen Aranha, an
assistant professor, help Emmanuel Ibarra into his new wheelchair Friday Dec. 4, 2015. Occupational therapy students raised the
money to purchase the wheelchair for Ibarra and surprised him with it on Friday.
The last day of class for Susie Dezelle was different Friday than it had been in past semesters. One of her classmates dressed as
Santa Claus, and the students waited patiently for a client they’ve been working with for almost a year.
Dezelle, the president of the Student Occupational Therapy Association at the University of Texas Medical Branch, worked for
about six weeks alongside fellow students to raise money. The organization took part in a profit-sharing event with Orange Leaf, a
frozen yogurt shop, held a bake sale, and an adaptive equipment olympics, in which students voted by donating money on which
professors they’d like to compete against each other. The top five professors who raised the most money competed in various
events. “Our group has raised money for various charities, but this is our first very targeted fundraising effort,” Dezelle said. “I’m
excited about it. It feels really good to see a need and know that you’re filling that need.”
When Emmanuel Ibarra entered the classroom with his father, students started clapping. For a moment, Ibarra was confused. But
then a new wheelchair, decorated with streamers, rolled in behind him and he put his head in his hands. “For one second my heart
is out,” Ibarra said. “It means so much to me, and I will be more comfortable. I’m so thankful.” Ibarra was in an accident about 10
years ago that resulted in his confinement to a wheelchair. Students have been working with him at St. Vincent’s House, which
offers a student-run clinic. “He uses a wheelchair for mobility,” Dezelle said. “And the wheelchair he uses now is broken. There’s a
part that hits against his leg and hurts him.”
Karen Aranha, assistant professor for the Department of Occupational Therapy, was in attendance, and started to tear up a little
when speaking to the class. “It is that smile on (Ibarra’s) face that has motivated us all, and has made St. Vincent’s such an
enjoyable place to work,” she said. The chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy, Patricia Fingerhut, also came to show her
support. “It’s very impressive,” she said. “They’re very dedicated students. They’re here on a very intensive program, so their time
outside of class and studying is very limited, and yet they have taken on all of these projects and really are exemplifying what we’re
trying to teach them.”
Ibarra speaks mostly Spanish. So after he cut the streamer off the seat of his new wheelchair, a student went over the ins and outs
of using it with him and his father in Spanish. “It’s been really fun (to work with Ibarra.) He lets me speak Spanish to him without
laughing at me, which is great. He’s a really fun guy to work with, and he’s very patient with us,” Dezelle said.
As class time came to an end, and the student dressed as Santa took his costume off, Fingerhut sums up the morning. “(The
students) are seeing their clients as people, most importantly, and not as a condition,” she said. “They’re looking at changing
people’s quality of life, and I’m proud of them.”

Krystal, Heather, Caitlin and Stacey are first year PA students who served on a medical mission trip to Mexico over Christmas break. They served on one of the three medical teams. They helped care for patients who were in need of acute care along with management of chronic illness and patient education. This trip was in conjunction with Southern Nazarene University, and there were people from all different backgrounds serving. This gave the PA students an opportunity to volunteer in the community and educate other volunteers about the role of a PA.

The Student Ambassador Society voted to plan a fundraising event benefitting all SHP programs. They decided to bring back the Cuisine Carnival from 2012, since it was so successful in raising funds for all SHP programs. So they quickly rounded up all SHP program reps and signed up to sell tickets for this big event 3 weeks in advance. They sold tickets in Joe’s Café, Café on the Court, Moody Medical Library and in the lobby of SHP/SON. They also received permission to make this an IPE event to earn credit, and invited all UTMB schools to attend for this credit. Their booths included a food of their choice and a game that represented their program. When all tickets were counted, they raised $904.00! Way to go ambassadors and to all students who participated!!
