Virtual Library Services As the long, lazy, relaxing days of summer begin, children and teens will be happy to discover that there is more to summer fun than the local mall, the beach, or even just hanging out with friends. Young people of all ages are invited to “ride the reading wave” at both the Grant R. Brimhall Library and the Newbury Park Branch, where they will find many exciting new books and events to enjoy as part of the summer reading program 2010! Beginning on June 14 and continuing through August 1, two reading clubs will be offered, one for children of all ages, Make a Splash – Read! and an- other for tweens and teens, Make Waves @ Your Library. All participants can join at any time. Because summer reading is meant to be relaxing and fun, there are no requirements for the reading clubs. Kids and teens are encouraged to explore the Library’s many collections and read whatever appeals to them – whether it’s graphic novels, early readers, pop- ular series fiction, or non-fiction books on a plethora of subjects. Children too young to read by themselves may have an adult or older sibling read to them. Members are given reading logs and book bags upon joining and are urged to record whatever or how much time they read. Listening to books counts, too! The Library has Playaways, audio-books, and book-cassettes that provide hours of listening pleasure. Additionally, there are puppets, music CD’s, magazines, and videos for all ages to enjoy. Each week Make a Splash – Read! club members receive small incentives to encourage them to keep on reading and visiting the Library. They also be- come eligible to enter contests and drawings to win other prizes, too! Through the generosity of the Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library, a number of excit- “Oakleaf” above this line. These resourc- es and services are available from the library website @ www.toaks. org/library. Research, Job Search and Homework Help: Special- ized databases provide authoritative information on academic, medical, literary, news, and practical subjects. For example, specific instructions on how to repair a specific make and model of au- tomobile are available in the Auto Repair Reference Center, full-text articles on current events are avail- able from General One File, biogra- phy and criticism on world authors can be found in Literature Resource Center and investment information on stocks, mutual funds, companies, and industries is available in the Morning- star database. All of these databases and many more are available for Virtual Library Services (continues on Page 4)
