PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
T his National Day, we are expecting a bonanza of lights,
acrobatic feats and military drums – a sensory overload
that we’ve come to associate with the NDP. It is rather
hard and humbling to think that such a spectacle is pulled
off by mere volunteerism.
In our Club, our Sub-Committee members certainly
know the meaning of volunteerism. They have been
giving generously of their time and expertise in the Sub-
Committees they serve. For that, we thank our delicated
Sub-Committee members.
With this year’s NDP theme being “Many stories, One
Singapore”, we seem to have been adopting one of our
own in recent months, that of innovation.
Jackson Miller completely revamped its wine list in
June this year. We meticulously selected concoctions
with names like Avignonesi and Beringer, from the United
States and Italy rather than traditional wine country France,
as they meshed nicely in both quality and cost effi ciency
due to lower and smoother tannin levels. That resulted
in the doubling in wine orders!
With such decadence comes
indulgence, so dessert wines and sparkling Moscato are
not forgotten.
From August, SOM will be launching its on the spot
creative designer cocktails . Get a taste of a good ol’
Californian concoction of brandy, maple, raisins and
orange juice.
Sometimes change can come in the form of an old
treat. The Palms has brought back the Chinese Set Dinner
menus, saving you the hassle of selecting from our a la
carte menu. Look out for the classic Teochew Yam Paste,
otherwise known as “Or Nee”.
We are creating more card rooms due to popular
demand. We hope to have the new rooms ready by
September. As for the Club corrective works, a new
architect has been appointed and we will soon be
tendering out the work on the MSCP and the Cabanas.
We have in recent months infused creative thinking

into our Club events.
One such example was
the Mocktail Party cum
dance party with the
moniker Shuffl e to the
Beatz. This new quasi-
clubbing experience we
created turned out to be
not just a success but
enabled D’Tanjong to
break the highest single
day’s sales record for
the past few years! It is
certainly a precursor of more such events to come.
The renting out of retail spaces will directly impact on our
Club culture as we know it. The process is peppered with
heavy negotiation and the like. The novel embellishments
will hopefully see a Spa operator occupying the fi rst fl oor
of the Admin Extension Block along with a Chinese music
hangout which will occupy the
second fl oor. The only thing that
is holding this back is the approval of licenses which our
would-be tenants are working towards.
Finally, a little anecdote to share. Recently a member
who came to dine at Jackson Miller requested for a special
menu to be created for him and his guests. The staff of
Jackson Miller not only obliged, but customised a wine-
pairing menu for them. The guests were very pleased
with the service. This is the kind of innovation and service
excellence we are looking to develop at the Club.
I would like to thank you for your unyielding support,
and I look forward to sharing more good news with you
in the months to come. In the spirit of togetherness, on
behalf of the Management Committee and Staff, I wish all
Members a Happy National Day!

Recently, a member,
who had been away
from the Club for over
the last six years, revi-
sited us with his aged
father. He told one of
our MC members that
the events featured
in Splash were what
prompted him to
emerge out of hiatus.
Similar sentiments have
been shared with me,
from members revisi-
ting our revamped Club. Revolutionizing exists within
the walls and between the lines; so with our Marcom
Chair and team sprucing up our bi-monthly publication
and club communications on the whole, considera-
tions have and will be met. Implementation of a mass
messaging service to our communica-
tions cache is an interesting shift.
It is truly a tall order running a sprawling club with a huge
membership base. Words like exclusive and inclusive,
family and fun and even surplus and self-sustainability
all must exist within one terrain. With great expectations
also comes great support so your active participation is
requested and appreciated. Such camaraderie can also
extend outside the Club premises, inviting novelty to
experience something novel.
We are organising an Open House on 7 & 8 September.
If you are the proposer of a new member who makes a
direct purchase of membership from the Club, you will
receive an incentive of $750 credited to your account.
We look forward to welcoming your best of friends as
Club members soon.
Cheers!

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE
M y teenage daughter came home one day and announced
with great jubilation that one of our neighbourhood
supermarkets will be undergoing a major retrofi tting
and be rebranded with the term Finest. Curious, as she
is one who is more at home with haute couture than
supermarkets, I quizzed her resonance with the relayed
news. She then expressed that with such an addition to
the surrounding infrastructure, our neighbourhood would
become more “atas”, more up-scale, by default. She
added that our property value would also rise as a result.
At the Club, we have expectations to meet as well.
At the recent AGM there was a suggestion that our
Club could perhaps consider opening our doors to non-
members to patronize our F&B outlets as that would help
bump up our revenue. But another member pointed out
that such a step would erode member exclusivity. Such
appeasing of dual expectations is no easy task, but kudos
to the various committees for trying. The Palms Café, with
their Palms’ Wish List, polled members’ top ten favourites
menu items. Although seen as a
member’s privilege, it did serve a bigger
purpose of pinpointing dishes that sell and that therefore,
have a direct impact on the Club’s P&L. Quite the trick.
As important as striking a fi ne balance between
exclusivity and revenue is conjuring originality.
Our ever beloved Mocktail Party was recently held in
conjunction with a fresh initiative to attract the young
and the young at heart. It was aptly called “Shuffl e to
the Beatz”. The joint event enjoyed rather encouraging
patronage from two very diverse age demographics.
Our F&B Department jumped on the bandwagon with
the recent durian feast at the Cabanas. Patrons said that
a better deal would be at hand if we were to hold the
fare during the durian peak season instead. And we shall
be back with the king of fruits soon. Just like our dance
events, it never ceases to amaze me how our members
have all the enthusiasm and vigour to relay their two
cents’ worth making our Club better and expectations on
both sides stronger.
Great Expectations

We sometimes take things for granted – our jobs, our
families, public amenities, social and religious harmony,
living in secure neighbourhoods and so on. Before we
rock the boat, it is worthwhile for us to consider how
different will Singapore would be today if not for our
Independence.
In our Club, we have our own way to celebrate our
country’s birthday. The National Day Carnival has
become a tradition of the Club for as long as most of us
can remember. This year we are using the Many Stories
… One Singapore in line with the nation-wide theme.
Do come and enjoy the food, the games and the fi ne
company.
Many stories, One Singapore
Let’s come together tocelebrate National Dayby VINCENT ESPECKERMAN
We all look forward to public holidays. Because it means
we get to stay up late the night before and get up anytime
we like.
And why not? We work hard and we deserve a break
every now and then.
We have all kinds of holidays. Some are religious feasts
and cultural festivals. Others celebrate workers, heroes
and signifi cant events in history. National Day stands out
among all the holidays if only because it is a holiday for all
Singaporeans without exception.
Every year on 9 August, we look back to that date in
1965. That’s when Singapore secured its independence
from Malaysia and became a sovereign nation. That was
when we attained the rights to our freedom and self-
determination. When we see the many countries being
controlled by outside powers, or are not politically or
economically strong enough to stand on their own, we
realize that freedom and self-determination are not things
we can take for granted.
During its post-independence periods, Singapore has
had to struggle for its survival. There were threats, both
internal and external. But in the end, our people always
pulled together and closed ranks. It took a lot of time
and effort to build bonds and foster trust among our
people from the various ethnic and religious groups. But
over time we realized that our diversity was actually our
strength. Our mix of people is what made us colourful
and given us our unique identity as Singaporeans.

DJ Jason warmed up the crowd with his brand of music

CLUB HISTORY
A slice of history:
We waited 37 yearsto get our firstSwimming Pool!by VINCENT ESPECKERMAN
Many members might be assuming that being a swim-
ming club, we’ve always had a swimming pool.
That’s not the case.
In the early years of Singapore Swimming Club we had
a beach front and, in fact, our members used to swim in
the open sea.
In 1899, we built a diving stage right in the sea near
the Club. It was a simple wooden structure with thatched
roof. It added to the fun of swimming, but swimming in
open waters in those days was risky business.
One fateful day, one Miss Boyer Smythe made a dive
before she spotted a shark in the water. There was a
sharp scream, a puddle of blood appeared in the waters,
and she disappeared never to be seen again.
To solve the problem with sharks, a temporary pagar –
a rectangular shaped wooden fencing – was constructed
around the diving platform, and swimming was henceforth
restricted within the confi nes of the pagar.
Later a more permanent pagar was built with concrete
bed. The pagar seemed to solve the problem with sharks
and sustaining cuts from sharp objects in the muddy sea-
bed. Then one day, member Edward Ted Morgan made
a full-blooded dive from the platform and ended up with
a broken neck. There was insuffi cient depth of water in
the pagar area!
It was then that members started talking about having
a swimming pool of their own where they could bathe
any time of the day rather than having to wait for high
tide which occurred eight to nine times a month in the
afternoons.
The idea was mooted at the annual general meeting in
1928. But it was only in 1931 that we fi nally had our fi rst
swimming pool! That came 37 years after the Club was
offi cially inaugurated in 1894.
The pool’s diving platform at that time was a structure
with a triangular frame. Every time a picture of the Club
appeared in the newspapers or a news clip, the triangular
diving platform would be the most prominent object. It
remained an icon of Singapore Swimming Club right until
1989. The children’s pool was at the opposite end from
the diving platform, and remains in the same position
today.

5-a-Side Soccer Tournament 2013: 29 June
Well in command by MUSTAJAB KASSIM
T he tournament took place at The CAGE on the last
Saturday of June. The objective of this annual event was
to bring our soccer ethusiasts together whilst providing a
platform for young emerging soccer talents to shine.
The competition saw four teams – namely Commandos,
Rangers, Snipers and Warriors – taking part. For a start,
the teams went head to head in a round robin challenge
to establish which two teams would face off for the
Champions title. The scoring was based on the two
with the most points. As it turned out, the Commandos
emerged as the top team followed by Rangers, Warriors
and Snipers in that order.
And so we had Commandos and Rangers facing off in
the fi nals. Commandos eventually overcame Rangers to
win at 2-1 and claim the Champions title. In the succeeding
match Warriors beat Snipers to claim the third spot.

15th Taekwondo Open Championship: 25 May
Taekwondo Take-Down by MUSTAJAB KASSIM
T he championship saw a total of 34 participants battle
it out in three core events, namely Individual Poomsae,
Individual Freestyle Destruction and various Sparring
events. The umpires were from the Singapore Taekwondo
Federation (STF).
In the Freestyle Destruction round, participants had to
break planks using their bare fi sts and feet. They were
assessed for style as well as execution. The sparring rounds
also proved exciting as opponents tried to outpunch and
outwit each other.
The most coveted award of the night, the Best Performance Award
2013 went to Adon See. Our Martial Arts and Fitness convenor, Dr William
Choo, presented the medals and souvenirs to all the winners, and tokens of
appreciation to all the referees and coaches.

More than a few heads turned at the
mention of the teams’ names: Team
Murray, Team Federer, Team Nadal

those tennis luminaries were not there
to play. But still we were in good
company!
The objective of the tournament
was to allow our tennis players to
come together to play good tennis
and enjoy each other’s company.
Winning was secondary. So each
team had both adults and juniors and
players with mixed experience.
39 players signed up for this year’s
champions tournament. Going with
tradition, the players were grouped
and ranked into four teams to play
fi ve doubles ties in round-robin
format. The four teams were named
after the four tennis greats – to remind
them that they are all champs in their
own way!
For the records, Team Djokovic
ended up as tournament champions.
But everyone had a prize, or at least
a souvenir, from Tennis Convenor,

Haze or no haze, play went onby PHILIP TAN
Keppel Club was the appointed venue for our Club’s 6th Golf Competition this
year. The format of play for the day was System 36 Stableford and despite the
haze, our golfers teed-off with not much problem.
After all had been said and done, the Dinner and Prize Presentation Ceremony
was held at a private function room in Keppel Club. After a sumptuous buffet,
the winners from all three divisions were awarded their medals.
4th Inter-Social Club Golf
Tournament (2nd Leg): 31 May
SSC are champions!by PHILIP TAN
S ixteen of our golfers took part in
the second leg of this challenging
tournament, held at the beautiful
Ria Bintan Golf Club. Tanglin Club
played host for the event, with over
100 golfers from seven different clubs
taking part. The scoring format was
altered in an effort to foster greater
camaraderie among the players.
Each club had to elect three to six
players per division, namely Division A (0-12 HCI), Division
B (12.1-18 HCI) and Division C (18.1-24/36). The scores
of the top two players were tallied based on System 36
Stableford. The results determined the winners of each
division. The Overall Champion Team was determined by
the top two scores for the three divisions.
After the event, the golfers had lunch at Ria Restaurant.
For this leg of the tournament, SSC Golfers were placed
within the top three positions in all three divisions! And
Francis Chia was named the Overall Best Gross Golfer.
To top it all off, SSC emerged as the overall Champion
Team. Kudos to all our golfers for a job well done!

prestigious meet bringing together
emerging swimming stars from

Zhang Chanyan accompanied the
Singapore team.
SSC Swimmer, Chloe Wang had
the honor of claiming the fi rst gold
medal for Singapore in the Girls
14-15 years 400m Meter Freestyle,
and in the process smashed her
personal best time. That was just a
prelude to a slew of medals and great
performances by SSC Swimmers.
Chantal Liew also won a gold,
while Nadine Staes-Polet, Christoper
Cheong and Chantel picked up
silvers. We had some bronze as well.
We congratulate our swimmers
who did the Club and our nation
proud!

swimmers put that little hiccup aside to swim a whopping 203 swims, 184 of

T he Fun Swim Camp was
deliberately planned for the long
mid-year school holidays so that
freed from their school work, the kids
could really hang lose and have some
fun. 31 children up to nine years old
participated in the event.
The fi rst two days’ activities were
all held within the Club. The children
played games, viewed videos and
pool training. On the third day they
ventured out to the Butterfl y Park and
the Underwater World on Sentosa.
The Butterfl y Park gave our
swimmers the chance to hold
colourful butterfl ies of various sizes.
Some even got to feed the birds
from their hands! Later the children
explored the fascinating plants and
sea-creatures in the Underwater
World. The mighty shark and the
graceful stingrays were just some
of the things that captivated them.
The kids then spent time with some
awesome organisms at the feeding
area. After that there was just enough
time to take some snap shots with
Sharky and Pinky before they were
whisked to dinner.

TRAVELLER’S TALES
A trip to Cebu & Bohol
Crawling up C
When Nazri fi rst told me the gang was planning to go
away on a short trip, I jumped in and said, “Let’s go to
Cebu! I have a friend there, maybe he’ll show us around.”
Everyone agreed. And so Cebu it was – no debate!
We – meaning Nazri, Azmi, Tang and I – arrived at
Cebu and made straight for the Alba Uno Hotel where we
stayed while we were there. We had to wait for my friend
Chris Dizon who knocked off from work only at 3pm.
Chris used to work in Singapore some years back. Let’s
just say I was good to him. And now it’s pay-back time!
Chris fi nally arrived and we wasted no time hopping
into his eight-seater boneshaker. Chris brought us to
this restaurant called “Jo’s Chicken”, which specialized
in BBQ. I must say the chicken meat was succulent - not
leather dry as BBQ meats tend to be.
We spent the next couple of hours taking a spin around
town and got a fl avour of the Cebu traffi c. On Cebu roads,
the bravest gets the right of way.
Chris was working the next day and could not be with
us during the day. But he was helpful enough to draw
up a checklist of must-see, must-do and must eats in
Cebu. So we hired the hotel van to take us through the list
which included the Taoist Temple, Santo Nino Basilica,
Majellen’s Cross and Fort San Pedro.
We covered all the destinations on the list quickly
enough and had some van time left over. So I asked the
driver, “Anywhere else would be nice to visit?”
“I can take you to Tap,” the driver replied.
“Tap? What can we see there?” I asked
“You can see the whole City of Cebu from there sir.”
We had to crawl up a steep hill to get to Tap. It was
only after we arrived at the bald summit that we had our
Eureka moment. Tap!? ... Oh, TOP!!! Top of the hill!!! You
know la how those Pinoys say it.
On “tap” of the hill with Cebu city in the backdrop. With certain individuals
showing off. No names mentioned.
These three mermen are from Singapore (the fourth one was on the boat
refusing to get wet).
White Sands Saavedra Beach Resort is situated at the southern tip of
Cebu Island about a two-hour car ride from Cebu City.

On Wednesday, the third day, we drove up to the
Saavedra Beach Resort with its pristine beaches. While
there, we made it a point to hop over to a nearby rock
island to snorkel in the crystal clear waters.
And on Thursday – our last full day in Cebu – we took a
speed ferry to Bohol Island. The one-way ferry ride took
close to two hours. Bohol was a fascinating showcase of
Philippine culture. It was a bit messy though - but in a nice
way. As countries develop and become sophisticated,
they become sterile as well. A bit of dirt is good for the
soul! We had a full day of sightseeing on the island. At
fi rst, I didn’t know what they meant when they said Cebu
is where you work, Bohol is where you have fun! Wisdom
just sank in!
The tour van took us through country roads and dirt
tracks, and we got to see how the natives lived and
worked. Along the way we saw padi fi elds and small
poultry farms. The itinerary included stopovers at the
Butterfl y Park and the Tarsier Sanctuary.
Our last stop was Chocolate Hills! These series of
conical mounds spread over a large area. They were
all similarly shaped - like hershe chocolate cones some
people say. It seems that hundreds of thousands of years
ago, they were coral reefs. Then in a series of ground shifts,
they became islands. Over the millennia, the movement
of the tectonic plates pushed them further up to become
hills. Only grass grows on them, that’s why they look like
bald hills. Now that we’d seen Chocolate Hills our lives
were fulfi lled; we could depart Bohol in peace.
As a last favour to me, Chris picked us up at the hotel
and drove us to the airport and we were on our way home
to our daily grind.
Dahang salamat, Chris! Owe you back when you come
again to Singapore.
And HERE’S the reason (sorry Christopher Dizon !!!) for our trip to Bohol
- CHOCOLATE HILLS! Ok, the hills don’t look anything like chocolate here
- but at the height of summer they are supposed to turn brown. We were
forced to use our imagination.
LEFT: On arrival at the ferry-pier in Bohol, we were greeted by a rondalla
band made up of elderly Filipino men (oh, those old boys certainly know
their guitar!).
TRAVELLER’S TALES
hocolate H illsby VINCENT ESPECKERMAN
We alighted on a little platform to the joyful strains of the ukelele played
by the native folks. They also performed the tinikling (Filipino bamboo
dance) with real nifty footwork.
In Bohol, we took a river cruise in one of these boat. There was a live
music and buffet lunch on board.
