PIRETTES
The history of the Pirettes begins with the old Hillyard high school.
Beth Noben was the very first "Pirate Girl." She led songs during her senior
year, using a small replica of the baton used by J. M. Tewinkel. The first
Pirate Girls did not march, but just led songs.
Evelyn Miranda, who is now book clerk at Rogers, was an outstanding
Pirate Girl for three semesters.
The group gradually grew until there were six song leaders. In 1935 it
was decided to enlarge the group to include a marching unit, and twenty-five
girls were chosen from a large number of volunteers. They formed various
letters on the football field between halves of the games and did marchingdrills. Practice was held each morning before school.
In 193(i it was decided to combine the forty-eight Pirettes with the band,
making a marching unit of ninety-eight to parade and perform at games.Marialese Kller was the drum major last fall.
Glenn B. Starr started the uniformed marching of the Pirettes and the
hand, and Miss Thelnia Thome, home economics teacher at Rogers, assisted
with tilt- colorful uniforms.

POME(Dedicated to Dick Hayes)
Once upon a midnight dreary
As he sat and culled her dearie
On a sofa made for one, but holding moreSuddenly there came a tapping
As of someone gently rapping
Rapping at the parlor door.
"Tis' my father, dear," she murmered"Only lie and no one more."
What cared he for her relations?
He was full of exclamations
Such a.s "Dearie, does OO love oo's dearie
more?"
Hut her father tired of wait inn
Waiting growing aggravating,
Opened wide the parlor door.
Oh how well that he rememberedThat cold night in bleak DecemberAs he flew out twenty paces from the door.
And for life will l>e branded
Where her father's foot had landed.
Quoth the raven "Never more."

ROGERS 0: GONZAGA 32
Getting off to a bad start but steadily improving. Rogers took a 32 to 0drubbing from the mighty Gonzaga eleven in the annual Shrine game.
Gonzaga scored 13 points in the first guarter and 12 in the second.Although Rogers was overcome by the score in the first half, they came
back fighting in the second half, repeatedly stopping the Bulldog threats. The feature og the game was the loyal support and enthusiasm from the
Rogers rooting section.
