As the year turns and London’s big summer fades, we’d like you to join us in Spitalfields this December for an end of year musical celebration.

Come and explore the hidden corners of the neighbourhood as we conjure up intimate performances in Georgian front rooms, opera with holographs in the vibrant Hoxton Hall, and unlock the Tower of London with an a JS Bach-inspired composition project. We continue fill more familiar spaces with sound as we’re joined by Gabrieli Consort & Players, The English Concert, and London Handel Players

bringing the best in baroque, and I Fagiolini in David Lang’s poignant The Little Match Girl Passion. Also taking the helm will be local people of all ages, from our young programmers to our community choirs, as well as the return of the magical Musical Rumpus series.

So come and enjoy the sights and sounds with us this Winter Festival! Wherever you’re coming from, you will be most welcome.

When you buy your tickets, why not consider donating the value of another ticket? We give all donated tickets to local residents who have not been to a Festival before and wish to experience our events for the first time.

The London Handel Players, led by Adrian Butterfield, have wowed audiences around the world for over 10 years. Now they team up with the renowned Scottish fiddle player Alasdair Fraser for a new programme of folk-inspired baroque music from the Celts and the Gauls. It won’t be a quiet start to the Festival – join us to kick things off in style!

Your ears and feet are requested as Sam Glazer introduces musicians from the London Handel Players in a musical adventure based around Gaelic traditional songs and classically-styled airs. Tower Hamlets Arts and Music Education Service

Come and hear extraordinary young musicians from across Tower Hamlets showcasing their creative energy, musical skills and exuberance. BAFTA Award-winning screenwriter and lifelong East Ender Alan Gilbey invites you to join him on a journey in the footsteps of Arthur Morrison to hear tales of the mean streets of Spitalfields and beyond. To coincide with his new book, East End Backpassages: an explorer’s guide, Alan and other local writers and performers come together for a Shoreditch remix of his sold out Summer Festival event to create an immersive experience which is part oral history event, part site specific performance and full of intrigue.

In this unique concert, Gramophone Award-winning vocal ensemble I Fagiolini bring together one of JS Bach’s greatest motets with David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s heartbreaking story Lang’s Pulitzer Prize-winning piece takes its inspiration from Bach’s St Matthew Passion, and is here animated with exquisite shadow puppetry by Matthew Robins. Threading the works together are delicate and evocative carols from Germany and Denmark, creating a poignant yuletide concert.

Fresh from their Associate Artist series at our Summer Festival, Gabrieli Consort & Players return as part of their final celebrations of their 30th birthday year. Britten’s virtuosic choral masterpiece is built around a tapestry of medieval poetry which has inspired so much glorious twentieth-century English choral music. It is accompanied by another of the choral collections from across the ages for which Gabrieli are so widely renowned.

Join the Early Opera Company on a trip to the Ospedale della Pieta, where orphaned girls were taught to sing and play like angels by no less than Antonio Vivaldi, who dedicated 30 years of his life to this astounding institution. aDam DanT illusTraTOrTower Hamlets resident Adam Dant is widely known for his unique celebrations of British culture and history through reinventing historical prints and illustrations by combining their style with contemporary ideas and situations. Many will be familiar with his maps and plans, for example of Shoreditch, which have both charted histories and re-imagined areas. Between 1995 and 1999 he created Donald Parsnips Daily Journal a palm-sized ‘newspaper’ distributed at random on the streets – a contemporary take on the eighteenth-century pamphleteer.

For our Winter Festival brochure, Adam takes his inspiration from old playbills and chapbooks. In particular he’s playfully explored the characteristically baroque interplay between music and nature, resulting in the illustrations of animals quizzically exploring musical instruments. He also shows his appreciation for the local architecture in the full-page scenes, featuring vocal consort Gallicantus in restaurant Galvin La Chapelle, as well as the map of our venues for this Festival, appropriately perched on a Georgian-inspired music stand.
