Spirituality As a Social Determinant of Health This program seeks to: • Establish a working definition of spirituality which will build our capacity for learning and shared understanding. • Challenge us to care for the whole person’s health, including spirituality, as embraced by the person in our care, assessed through various mechanisms and nurtured through various modalities. The 2015 Interfaith Health & Hope Coalition Prayer Event Grand River Tabernacle MBC ENTRANCE This program will review the classic concept of determinants of health, and then explore the expansion of social determinants to include spirituality. We will establish a working definition of spirituality which will build our capacity for learning and shared understanding. The program will look at spirituality as a determinant, as well as the protective and risk factors inherent in the spiritual domain. Attention will be given to critical components such as screening and assessment, spiritual interventions, and collaborative care. Creating this new framework impels us to care for the totality of the person, providing the opportunity for enhanced and persistent outcomes. Featuring Stephen P. Kliewer, MS, DMin, LPC Dr. Kliewer, executive director of Wallowa Valley Center for Wellness in Oregon, has written Creative Use of Diversity in the Local Church, and was the primary author of Healthcare and Spirituality, a basic text for health care providers, among other academic articles.
