Twenty Spiritual Gifts

The table below categorizes and briefly defines 20 spiritual gifts explicitly identified in Scripture. It should be noted that others might categorize spiritual gifts in different ways, so this is not to say there are exactly 20 spiritual gifts.

The gift of Administration is the divine enablement to understand what makes an organization function, and the special ability to work through the details of the organizational process that needs to be taken in order to facilitate and execute the goals and purposes of a ministry. Does this describe you? A detail person making ministries run smoothly – Willing to step into chaos, bring about order and then go on to another project – Skilled at making ministry efficient and organized – Complete projects in a way that others grow and God is glorified – Effectively use resources by organizing people and delegating responsibilities.

2. Apostleship

To be sent with a message

The gift of Apostleship is the divine ability to start and oversee the development of new churches or ministries. Equivalent to a pioneer missionary. Does this describe you? Intimate  knowledge  of  Christ’s  teachings  – Enjoy leading in the formation of new ministries – Consider myself a messenger of  God’s  Word  – Love  to  start  ministries  but  don’t  enjoy  long-term work – Multi-gifted – Cross-cultural adaptability.

3. Discernment of Spirits

To separate or make a distinction, differentiate

The gift of Discernment is the divine enablement to distinguish between truth and error. It is the ability to discern the spirits, differentiating between good and evil, right and wrong, seeing through phoniness and insincerity before the difference is manifest to all by the results. Does this describe you? Can sense wrong motives in others – Can discern evil in a situation – Strong ability to feel the presence or absence of the Holy Spirit.

4. Exhortation To come along side of

The gift of Exhortation is the divine enablement to minister understanding, encouragement, and council in order to uplift, comfort, and strengthen others. Does this describe you? Others seek guidance and counsel from you – Visualize goals and develop a step by step process to achieve them – Spark others to action – Speak with conviction and sometimes urgency – Enjoy new insights   into   God’s  Word   – Positive outlook on life – Often remind others what God has done for them – Willing to challenge others.

5. Evangelism To bring good news

The gift of Evangelism is the divine enablement to effectively communicate the Good News to those who have yet to believe so they respond in faith and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Does this describe you? Always want to extend an invitation for people to begin a relationship with Christ at church – Feel natural sharing the gospel – Enjoy getting out among unbelievers – Often pray for the Lord to put people in your path so you can tell them of Jesus – You have a passion to see believers around you actively reaching out as well.

6. Faith To trust, have confidence, believe

The gift of Faith is the divine enablement to act on God's promises with confidence and unwavering belief in His ability to fulfill His purposes. Does this describe you? Confidently believe the promises of God – See the ability of God as bigger than the obstacle to be moved – Your faith manifests in unusual deeds of trust and boldness – Have a vision for accomplishing the work of God – Inspire others to boldly take claim of God’s  promises  – Optimistic in the midst of trial and even persecution.

7. Giving To give part of, share

The gift of Giving is the divine enablement to contribute money and resources to the work of the Lord with cheerfulness and liberality. People with this gift do not ask "How much money do I need to give to God?" but, "How much money can I give to God?" Does this describe you? Give liberally, consistently, and sacrificially to the Lord’s   work   – Are resourceful, but not necessarily wealthy – Wise with money – Give beyond your tithe – Bless and encourage others with your cheerful generosity – Enjoy giving in many ways (money, possessions, time, energy, and love) to support ministries.

8. Healing To restore instanta-neously

The gift of Healing is the divine enablement to function as an instrument of God for spiritual, emotional, and physical healing. Does this describe you? When you pray others are miraculously healed – God is glorified when people are healed – You have seen people delivered from spiritual, physical, emotional or mental bondage instantaneously.

9. Helps To take the place of someone

The gift of Helps is the divine enablement to accomplish the practical and necessary tasks which free-up, support, and meet the needs of others. Does this describe you? Like short-term projects – Not comfortable in the limelight – Enjoy working behind the scenes to promote the growth of a ministry.

10. Interpretation To translate, interpret

The gift of Interpretation is the divine enablement to make known to the Body of Christ the message of one who is speaking in tongues. Does this describe you? Can decipher messages from God even though spoken in another language unknown to you.

11. Knowledge To know The gift of Knowledge is the divine enablement to discover, accumulate, analyze, and effectively apply information or revelation/biblical insight to special needs in the Body of Christ. Does this describe you? Enjoy   studying   God’s   Word deeply; especially doctrine – Stronger emphasis on thought-life.

12. Leadership To stand before

The gift of Leadership is the divine enablement to cast vision, motivate, and direct people to harmoniously accomplish the purposes of God. Does this describe you? Good at motivating others for service to the Lord – Willing to accept responsibility – See the BIG picture – You can delegate, but also know when not to – Enjoy being in charge of a ministry rather than behind the scenes – Others tend to seek you out for direction and are interested in your views.

13. Mercy To have compassion

The gift of Mercy is the divine enablement to sense the emotional needs of others and translate that compassion into cheerful and practical help to alleviate the suffering of those in need. Does this describe you? Sensitive – Compassion that transcends human sympathy and normal Christian concern – Patient/tolerant – Tend to befriend those who are needy, undeserving, abandoned, or undesirable – Perhaps  too  personally  involved  in  other’s  pain  and  problems  – Run more on feelings that facts – Assume  the  best  in  people’s  motives.

14. Miracles To do powerful deeds

The gift of Miracles is the divine enablement to serve as a human intermediary through whom God effects powerful acts which change the normal course of nature in order to authenticate the message of the Good News and bring glory to God. Does this describe you? When you pray the natural course of events are altered and God is glorified – When you pray and God performs miracles, people believe because they see the power of God.

The gift of Prophecy is the divine enablement to reveal truth and proclaim it in a timely and relevant manner for understanding, correction, repentance, or edification. There may be immediate or future implications. Does this describe you? Generally see things in black and white – Understand the mysteries of God – A lot of time is spent alone with God in prayer – Have definite opinions about the Christian life based on communication with God – Speak the truth of God from God in order to enlighten a situation – A  unique   ability   to  discern  God’s   plan   – Evaluate the spiritual conditions of your time.

16. Service To serve The gift of Service is the divine enablement to perform practical tasks, faithfully behind the scenes and in practical ways, which directly bless and minister to others' physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Motivated by meeting the needs of others – Often more concerned with practical needs than spiritual needs – Do not emphasize verbally witnessing for Jesus Christ instead witnessing by actions – Answer quickly to needs.

17. Shepherding To shepherd a flock

The gift of Shepherding is the divine enablement to nurture, care for, and guide people toward ongoing spiritual maturity. Does this describe you? Feelings of protection and care for others in their Christian walk – Especially relational in small, personal groups – Enjoy helping others grow and mature in the Lord – Others look to you as a strong example of a follower of Christ – Enjoy providing spiritual leadership  and  nurturing  those  around  you  through  God’s  Word.

18. Teaching To instruct The gift of Teaching is the divine enablement to clearly understand, present, explain, and apply the word of God effecting greater Christ-likeness in the lives of listeners. Does this describe you? Enjoy  seeing  people  grow  in  God’s  Word  – Enjoy the   study   and   practical   application   of   God’s   Word   – Have an ability to explain biblical truths clearly – Look at Biblical passages in relation to their context – Interested in accuracy of words and their meaning – Investigate sources of knowledge.

19. Tongues (Spiritual Language)

Tongue, language

The gift of Tongues (spiritual language) is the divine enablement to speak, worship, or pray in a language unknown to the speaker. People with the gift may receive a spontaneous message from God, which is made known to His whole Body through the gift of interpretation. Does this describe you? At times can break language barriers to share the Word of God without knowing the language being spoken.

20. Wisdom To apply truth practically

The gift of Wisdom is the divine enablement to apply spiritual truth effectively to meet a need in a specific situation. Does this describe you? See clearly consequences of behavior – Others come to you for advice – Enjoy practical application of Scripture – See clearly   when   and   how   to   apply   God’s   truth   effectively   – Emphasize understanding  God’s  will   – Strong grasp of various worldviews and how they   affect/inform  people’s   perception   of   the Truth – Can easily discern non-Biblical insights – Ability  to  bring  forth  from  God’s  wisdom  the  current  application in life.
