The Catechism of the Catholic Church is certainly the greatest of treasures given to the whole Church during the 25-year pon ficate of Pope John Paul II. During a me in which forces both in and outside of the Catholic Church worked to sow confusion at all levels of society and the church, God sent us Pope John Paul II to clarify a few things. In his Apostolic Cons tu on Fidei Deposi um (the Deposit of Faith), upon publica on of the universal Catechism of the Catholic Church, the late Holy Father a ested to the doctrinal value of the text: “The Catechism of the Catholic Church (…) is a statement of the Church’s faith and Catholic doctrine, a ested to or illumined by Sacred Scripture, the Apostolic Tradi on, and the Church’s Magisterium. I declare it to be a sure norm for teaching the faith and thus a valid and legi mate instrument for ecclesial communion. May it serve the renewal to which the Holy Spirit ceaselessly calls the Church of God, the Body of Christ, on her pilgrimage to the undiminished light of the Kingdom!”

It is my hope that as we turn our a en on to our celebra on of the Sunday liturgy, we will, together, turn to the “sure norm for teaching the faith,” the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Perhaps you’ve already discovered its wealth of teaching since it draws upon Sacred Scripture, the Fathers of the Church, various Saint’s wri ngs, early Councils, and, especially the documents of the Second Va can Council (1962-1965). Part Two of the Catechism is on the Celebra on of the Chris an mystery. That is, the celebra on of the Holy Mass, the Sacred Liturgy. I recommend your reading of this part of the catechism on the liturgy so as to grow in your apprecia on and understanding of what a tremendous privilege it is to gather at least weekly for the Eucharist as a parish. You’ll find Part Two of the Catechism begins at paragraph #1066 thru #1075. Quo ng from the Second Va can Council document Sacrosanctum Concilium, paragraph #1010, answering the ques on: What does the word liturgy mean?, says in part: “In the liturgy full public worship is performed by the Mys cal Body of Jesus Christ, that is, by the Head and His members. From this it follows that every liturgical celebra on, because it is an ac on of Christ the priest and of his Body which is the Church, is a sacred ac on surpassing all others. No other ac on of the Church can equal its efficacy by the same tle and to the same degree. Finally from the same Va can II document the Catechism reminds us: “The liturgy is the summit toward which the ac vity of the Church is directed; it is also the font from which all her power flows” (see paragraph #1074).

Welcome back to Mass in person, to all who are able to join us at this me. Thanks to our Re-Opening Team Volunteers!

God has revealed Himself to us as our Father. Throughout sacred scripture we have many appealing images of God as the Father of all. At one point the Apostle Philip said to Jesus: “Show us the Father and that will be enough.” Who among us cannot relate to the parable of the Prodigal Son? It is his father who surprises us and warms our hearts as we read of his healing love for his wayward son. The mercy of our heavenly father is experienced so o en through the pa ent and compassionate ways of our own fathers in life. Our earthly fathers, living or deceased, are God’s gi reflec ng, in flesh and blood, the love of the Father of us all. Today, especially, thank the Lord for Dad in thought, word and deed. Happy Father’s Day!

Sincerely,

Fr. Albert

In today’s gospel reading Jesus tells his followers to have no fear. The claim that whatever is covered up will be uncovered and secrets made known arises from the power of the gospel, in which the disciples par cipate through the means of their mission. Their simplicity, vulnerability, and dependence on God demonstrate the reality of God’s presence and character in the face of the world’s claims to possess real power. Even though proclaiming the gospel will bring suffering, the gospel must be proclaimed “in the light” and “on the housetops” (Mt 10:27), for the gospel proclaimed and lived is the most powerful tool at the disciples’ disposal against fear. Reflect this week on how you might use the Bible to confront whatever fears you may have and how your proclama on of the gospel can calm the fears of others.

Although fathers do not physically carry their children from concep on, fathers can s ll be overwhelmed by an unexpected pregnancy. We Chris ans must support men who, in following the example of St. Joseph, choose to embrace their role as a father in all circumstances, but especially in challenging situa ons. St. Joseph was unexpectedly called to fatherhood amid extremely confusing and difficult circumstances. However, despite many obstacles, St. Joseph chose to be faithful. St. Joseph chose life by listening to God’s will and consciously deciding to be a father to Jesus, the Son of God. Pope Saint John Paul II said that fathers are called to exhibit “generous responsibility for the life conceived under the heart of the mother” (Familiaris consor o 25). Like St. Joseph, all fathers are uniquely entrusted with the protec on and defense of both mother and child and, in this way, safeguard the sanc ty of human life. But biological fathers, because they do not physically carry the child, some mes fail to truly father their children.

Our society increasingly tells fathers that they should have no say in the lives of their unborn children, no opportunity to choose to father their children. Our society seems to restrict the decisions regarding an unborn child solely to the discre on of the mother. In the face of false messages about fatherhood, we must respond with the truth that the role of a father “is of unique and irreplaceable importance” (FC 25). We know that the assistance and support of the father of a child, or lack thereof, can o en be a deciding factor in a woman’s decision to choose life. Tragically, there are men who some mes pressure mothers to make the decision to abort the child, sinning grievously and making the cowardly choice. These men are not following the example of St. Joseph and are not exercising true, spiritual fatherhood.

This is because fatherhood extends beyond simple procrea on and biology. Fatherhood is first a spiritual reality, because fatherhood has its origins in God who chose to reveal Himself to us as Our Father, sending his only Son for the sake of our salva on. Fathers therefore have a special and unique role “in revealing and in reliving on earth the very fatherhood of God” (FC 25). Fathers have a vital, unique, and important role to play in the personal and spiritual development of their children, and in reflec ng the love of God the Father himself. Fathers are called to show the world the virtues of a tender protector, while living out the virtues of humility and courage.

In all circumstances, but especially in difficult circumstances, a father needs to be encouraged to faithfully accept the role entrusted to him by God and support the mother of his child. Through our prayers and through the intercession of St. Joseph, patron of fathers, may fathers come to know the irreplaceable role they hold in the lives of their children, and the responsibility they share in welcoming God’s gi of new life!
