After all, there are all of (maybe) 10 houses in our neighborhood that are families of Americans- every- one else is from other countries. Who knows if they trick or treat? Shelby was bemoaning the weather (it was raining) and asked if I would’ve gone out in the rain. My response was “for free candy? Heck yeah!” See, I wasn’t allowed to go house to house as a kid. I can remember going to Oglethorpe Mall a few times, but that was it. I chalk that up to the fact that either a) my mom and dad thought it was wrong to send me door to door “begging”, or 2) they were too old to follow a hy- peractive, sugar-buzzed kid from door to door, since they were both in their 40s by the time I came along. We eventually did get about 10 or 12 kids at the door- most of them accompanied by their parents. The last two to come by asked if they could have the rest of the candy, assuring me that they were, in fact the last kids out (I declined- I was taking the rest of the candy to RuSan’s). And I was right in assuming that there weren’t many Caucasian children in the neighborhood. None at all came to the house, in fact. And the cutest of the costumes I saw was the little boy around three or so who said “hola” when I opened the door and then “trick or treat” in one of those cute, little kid voices. One of my favorite creations in our world is that thing we call a “day.” You know, that 24 hours that comes to an end, only to begin another 24 hours. Now I know it doesn’t take much to intrigue me, but this has always been something that I have given thought to. And if you think about it, it is one of the most refreshing things about life. In hunting or fishing, it doesn’t matter what yesterday was like, to-day is a new day. It doesn’t matter that I never saw a deer yesterday, today will be better. It doesn’t mat-ter if I didn’t catch any fish yester-day, today may be the day they turn on. Again, if you really think about it, hunters and fishermen are men and women of optimism. If we were not, we would never get up the next morning and do it all over again. Today is a creation that is meant to be one of promise and

hope, not dread and despair. It is meant to be a time for leaving the disappointments and discourage-ments of yesterday and holding on to the possibility of something bet-ter. It is also an opportunity to for-get about the failures of days past and embrace new mercy. There is a very important verse in the Bible that says this; “Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each day.” I really, really like that……. and you should too. Let me tell you why. Some of you right now, really messed up yesterday. You made a promise that you broke. You perhaps succumbed to tempta-tion. The determination that you thought you had, left you yester-day. The self-control that had been your ally, suddenly abandoned you yesterday. But that was yesterday. Today is today. It is new. You do not have to bring the failures of yester-day with you today. God’s mercies begin afresh EACH day! You now have a choice; you can either run from God, ashamed of the failures of the past, or you can run to Him, with a heart-felt

confession, knowing that His faith-fulness is great and that He has new mercy that He longs to show to you, afresh, beginning each and every day.

very busy night. To compromise, we decided to start at 10, when things would (hopefully) have slowed down a bit. As always, the wait staff was in costume (with Tommy, in his “Joker Nurse” outfit from “The Dark Knight” the most impres-sive) and there were plenty of

customers dressed for the oc-casion, too. We had a Pinhead (“Hellraiser”), Jason (“Friday the 13th” part whatever), a Lara Croft (“Tomb Raider”), Coraline (from the Tim Burton movie), some anime guy, a couple of dudes in drag, a woman made up to be a zombie, a grim reaper (Mike D.), an Army specialist (his room-mate, Corey), a dude in a old man beard, and a girl wearing a felt magnet with chicks glued to it (a chick magnet- same as Mike’s

costume from two or three years ago. To his credit, he didn’t give her any grief about it- at least, not that I heard). I always consider it a good night at karaoke if I don’t have to do a lot of singing, and that made our Halloween show a good night (only three songs for me in two hours). It was made even better by something that happened at the end of the night. There was a 12 or so year old girl at the restau-

rant (with her mom and sister) who sang the Jackson 5’s “ABC” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” (apropos for Halloween, yeah?). For “Thriller”, she even did the dance. It was great. That’s not the cool part, though. As she was leaving with her party, the girl came over to me and said “thank you” and handed me some of her candy. I’m not a particular-ly sensitive guy, but I thought that was a really sweet gesture on her part. It kind of made my night...

That’ll do it for this week. I’ll be back next time with more news, notes, and rumors from all around. And maybe even some sports, too. As always, send your questions, praises, or gripes to [email protected], or via snail mail to: Bean Spouts c/o Spirit Newspapers P.O. Box 33 Pooler, GA 31322.

God, bless America.

BY AL CARRELL AND KELLY CARRELL

If you need a little more ro-mance in your life, why not install a fireplace? You don’t have to re-model your home to do so with the new “ventless” fireplaces. They can be put just about anywhere, even on a wall or in a corner. Here is what we found out about adding one to your home. You have several choices as to

your “flame source.” Some are bet-ter than others. The electric models use a standard 110 power source, making it easy to install just about anywhere. You can turn the “fire” off and on easily, and adjust the flames as needed. The “ventless” gas fireplaces use a gas source for their flames. They use the air inside the room as an oxygen source, so they don’t require a flue and vent. You need to make sure that the one you are looking to buy has an oxygen-depletion sensor to automatically shut it off should the oxygen in the room get down to a low level. Your third choice is a gel-flame fireplace. The gel comes in a can and burns for about two hours per can. It can be shut off if you want the fire to stop burning. No other power source is needed for this unit. The gas fireplaces will give off more heat and a more natural look, but they are the priciest of the three. The electric models give off less heat but cost less, and they are certainly easy to use. The gel fireplaces are mainly just for looks, as they give off little heat but can be put just about anywhere. Some even can be used without any “logs.” When you start shopping, you will see that these fireplace options can be a great addition to your home, because they don’t burn wood and can be installed easily in many different locations to give you and your family a warm and cozy feel as well as some additional heat this winter. Now you can have that fireplace without renovating your whole house, and you can have it in one shopping trip! Make sure your choice is OK with the local building code and is

installed with safety in mind.* * *

Q: I noticed a draft coming from inside my cabinet and found that there is a large gap around where the gas line comes into the kitchen. Is it OK to seal around this pipe, and what will work best? -- K.D.

A: As long as you are not sealing up a valve in the wall, you can seal the gap. The easier way is to use ex-panding foam insulation. It comes in a can and will fill in even large gaps and seal them from air and moisture. One can will be more than enough to fix that hole. You might as well look for more and seal them while you are at it.

* * *HO HO HO! Would you like to make a nifty Christmas gift for the home? Windchimes add a touch of music to your deck or patio. We have some simple plans for a set of windchimes made from electri-cal conduit (pipe), which is easy to cut and not very expensive. The other parts are available at your fa-vorite hardware place, or you may have them left over from another project. Just send a self-addressed, stamped envelope, along with $1 ($2 in Canada) to The Super Handyman in care of the paper, and you should have time to knock out the chimes before Christmas.

* * *VELCRO HELPS YOU KEEP IT TOGETHER IN THE SHOP Velcro is a super shop aid. Put a piece on the back of your drill-bit box and the other half of the Velcro on your drill storage case. The bits will be super handy when you need them. Put one half of an-other piece on your tape measure and the other on your ladder. Now you won’t lose your tape when you set it down after measuring. Keep

small hardware boxes right on your toolbox. You’ll be able to keep it all together with just one small package of Velcro.

* * *Dear Carrells: We have a custom-made foot scraper out at the fam-ily farm. Since we’ve been work-ing around our yard at home, I’ve sure missed it, so I designed a simple one for the house, too. I used the two license plates that I just switched out on the car and at-tached them to each other for ex-tra strength. Then I attached them to the side of the deck next to the steps. It’s the perfect spot to scrape off the mud before heading up to the back door. -- R.P.

* * *A SUPER HINT -- To save time on drywall repairs, make sure to smooth down the final coat with a sponge before it dries. If the top coat is smooth like the rest of the wall, then there will be much less sanding to do when it does dry. Then you can get to the painting.

* * *Dear Al: When we had our roof inspected for damage, the man who did it found a clogged down-spout on our guttering. I’m glad he spotted it, because I had no idea it wasn’t working right. I went up on the roof and tried using a snake but couldn’t break up the clog. Out of desperation, I stuffed the gar-den hose up into the downspout and turned the water on. That clog blasted out the top and rained down all over me. What a big mess. But the clog was out of the way, and in a short time, too! -- K.T.

* * *Q: I am getting ready to try tiling my bathroom. I have bought the tiles but am going to have to make some cuts to fit them in. What is the best method for cutting them, that will cost me the least and be the easiest to use? -- L.R.

A: A tile-cutting saw or wet saw is the best and fastest way to cut tiles without wasting a lot. You can rent them from a tool rental store, and they don’t cost much if you plan ahead. Get everything else down except for the cutting, and try to do it all in one day so you can re-turn the tool quickly so the rental fee will be less.

* * *A Tip From the Super HandyMom -- When my favorite mud boots developed holes in the bottom, I was heartbroken. I finally found a new pair, but created a neat planter from the old ones. I put rocks in the bottom for extra drainage (the holes added even more) and then planted ivy in the boots. They sit

on my back porch next to the door, and they are a real conversation piece!

* * *Got a question or a handy tip? Send it to The Super Handyman in care of this newspaper, or visit our Web site at www.thesuperhandyman.com. Those of general interest will be used in future columns.

Maytag, better known for many years of quality washing-machine manufacturing, entered the automo-bile business, in partnership with Mason, from 1909 to 1912.

The two-in-one car was a unique idea: A semi-enclosed delivery truck that easily could be converted to an open touring car, simply by switch-ing bodies. For $1,250, one could buy the two-cylinder Maytag chas-sis with two bodies, or else buy the touring car alone for $1,150, or just the delivery truck for $1,175. Why two bodies for a single chassis? The idea was that the owner could have a family car and also a work truck -- without having to buy two complete vehicles. The Model 12, as illustrat-ed, had 1/2-ton carrying capacity, but the heavier Model 11 could handle 3/4-ton, but was advertised as “not so speedy as” the 30 mph Model 12.

Also, there was a Model 11 light delivery open wagon with a pickup box that sold for only $650. It also was available with a covered cargo section ($40 extra). It was air-cooled, while the Model 12 was

water-cooled.In addition to various types of

touring cars, Maytag also offered a racy little Model H two-passenger speedster, an early sports car! There also was a bare-bones “Goat” racer available for the most adventurous buyers.

“Silent as the Sphinx” was one of the Maytag car’s mottos. Another one was “We claim quality, and give it.”

“I’m going to work, dear. Come out and help me take off the tour-ing car body and put on the delivery truck body, like we do every morn-ing!” Hmmm ... I don’t think so. By the time the bodies were switched, it would be time to be home from work, so why bother?

By C. Edward Wilson Red Raiders playoff season starts tonight There never seems to be any rest when you are considered the best. Constant preparations, viewing films and making coach-ingdecisionsbefittingyourteam’ssuccess are always at the front of your mind. The No. 2 ranked (3A-A) Savan-nah Christian Preparatory School

footballfindsitselfinanelitespotheadingintothefirstroundoftheSingle-Aplayoffs,whichbegin to-night at Westside Stadium in Gar-den City. Will Clark, Chris Barnwell and company will have its hands full from here on out as SCPS tries towin itsfirstfootballtitle intheschool’s history. One of its peren-nial nemeses, the Emanuel County Institute squad has regrouped since losing to the Red Raiders

earlier in the season. The Bulldogs come into this week’s poll ranked No. 6. The Grove’s football team fi-nally got on track by defeating Savannah High last week and will try to do its best to derail a surpris-ingly better than expected Jen-kins team. The Warriors ‘shocked the world’ recently by defeating Bradwell in Hinesville and have taken on a ‘we take no hostages’ attitude, which has parlayed into playoffaspirations. South Effinghamcontinues its‘Jekyll and Hyde’ ways. The Mus-tangs won four in a row and are currently on a four game losing streak, which hopefully will be snapped down in Jesup when it takes on Wayne County. The Yel-low Jackets are just as enigmatic this season, while posting a 2-7 re-cord. The two wins came against EffinghamCountyandGroves. Congratulations to the Redskins Just when you thought Bryan County wouldn’t win any games this season, the Redskins find away to get the job done in high fashion. Bryan County scored 23 pointsinthefirsthalfandheldoffa determined Savannah Country Day rally in the fourth quarter for theRedskins’firstvictory,23-21onlast Friday night in Pembroke. Alex Cruz scored twice on runsof12and48yardsinthefirstquarter for the Redskins (1-8, 1-4 Region 3-A East). An 11-yard run by Winston Johnson and a Cody Crowe 15-yard field goal, sand-wiched around a 1-yard scoring run by SCD’s Morris Watson, made it 23-7 at the half. The leading ball carrier in the contest was Cruz, as he led all rushers with 158 yards on 21 at-tempts. Quarterback Glaize had 210 yards passing for the Redskins.
