I recently took what I think, is my last river trip for the year. It was a beautiful float on the Pow-ell River. Even though the fishing wasn’t too good, the fall landscape was picturesque; and it was good to visit with a friend that I hadn’t seen for several years. There was, however, one twist to this trip that made it unique for me…….. We fished from kayaks. I always had certain ideas about kayaks. First of all, I thought they were for folks who loved the water, but cared little for fishing. (My first mistake) Secondly, I thought they would be unsteady when it came to keeping me above the water. (My second mistake). And thirdly, I thought they would be ergonomi-cally lacking when it came to fish-ing. (Wrong again). I am officially hooked, but please don’t tell my wife; all she needs is for me to be hooked on something else. But this was truly fun and it will not be my last time in one of these plastic boats. It’s funny that as I was admir-ing them, I wondered if perhaps Fisher Price or Little Tykes had a kayak line. Heck, if they can build indestructible toys for kids, they undoubtedly can build a good plas-tic fishing boat. But I digress. One of my fears in getting old is that I will turn into a cranky old

man. You have seen the type. They look at the antics of children today as if they were never a child them-selves. They think young people ought to act like adults and they absolutely refuse to change or try anything new. They are not known for kindness, patience, and under-standing, but criticism and cantak-erism. And while the world passes them by, they blame it for not stay-ing still, in their era, in their gen-eration. The truth is, things change; yes, some for bad, but some for good. And people change. That doesn’t make them bad, only dif-ferent – and different is not bad. Since people change, if we are to be able to communicate with them, we must change too. To simply decry change does little. What we all must be able to do is keep the things that matter and change in the ways that don’t. This is really a good prescrip-tion for churches, because if we are going to be able to communicate with the new, we must be willing to keep the things that matter and change in the things that don’t. In many churches today, one could walk in blindfolded on a Sunday morning, and not know if they had stepped back into the decade of the seventies, or if they were in the present day. And we

wonder why we are not effective. I’m glad that I got in that kayak the other day, and the main reason was not for the fun or the fishing, but for what it did to dispel my negative, preconceived ideas about something that I had never tried, simply because I didn’t want to change.

By C. Edward Wilson Red Raiders still ranked No. 2 Savannah Christian remains in second place in the Georgia High School Coaches Poll as Wesleyan holds down the No. 1 spot as only two games remain in the regular

season for both teams. SCPS will host Portal this Fri-day at Westside Stadium in Garden City as its hopes to remain unde-feated headed into the final week of the regular season. Groves’s defensive end earns local honor During the regular football season, members of the Savannah Quarterback honor two local foot-ball players. There is usually a back (quarterback, running back, etc. and lineman of the week chosen). After finally winning its first game of the season a member of the Groves defensive front Four walked away with one of the ac-colades. Defensive end Terrence Brehler was named Lineman of the Week, after posting nine tackles, five solo, in Groves’s victory over winless Savannah High. Earning Back of the Week hon-ors was Country Day quarterback Tate O’Connor. The junior cur-rently holds the passing record for the Hornets, with 1737 yards.

Cutter finally getting recognition The Groves Rebels had plenty of expectations before the currrent season opened. Their only exhibi-tion game against Richmond Hill

featured Quaterback Chris Cutter, receivers D. J. Edwards and Richie Wilson. All three players shown like dy-namite waiting to show its poten-tial, unfortunately the regular sea-son only delivered puffs of smoke. That ending last week in a closely fought contes against Sa-vannah High where the Rebels were victorious by a 21-14 count. After the win Cutter mentioned to the media how happy first year Coach Gred Hunter was and was relieved that all the hard work had finally led to a win. The Rebels have only two games remaining in the regular season and won’t be in the playoff picture, but it is reassuring to see that the team with so much poten-tial did have a chance to walk away with so much recognition after its first victory as the aforementioned clippings were expressed by the lo-cal media and the Greater Savan-nah Quarterback’s Club. SSU Homecoming schedule The Savannah State University football team will play Edward Wa-ters College of Jacksonville, Flori-da on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. at Ted Wright Stadium. The game is a culmination of a week’s activities. A 9am parade will begin on MLK, Jr., Blvd. and Anderson Street followed by the game at 2 p.m. At 8pm in Tiger Arena, the R&B group “The Manhattans” have a scheduled concert. For more information, please con-tact the sports media office at 351-3181. schedule that look to be a chal-lenge are Georgia and South Caro-lina...

Alabama is another team that needs to send a “thank you” gift to the zebras after Saturday’s game. If you think official calls (and par-ticularly non-calls) didn’t sway

the outcome of that game, you’re seriously deluding yourself...

Curiouser and curiouser, though, is that college games weren’t the only ones where the refs blew calls this weekend- the NFL had its share of official stu-pidity, too. Just look at the rul-ing that the hit on Marty Brooker wasn’t helmet to helmet. What a crock. I guaran-freaking-tee you if a

Falcon player had put a lick like that on one of the Cowboys, there would’ve been flags flying in from every which way...

I read a note on MentalFloss.com about what MLB does with pre-printed championship shirts that don’t get used. You know, like the ones that said “Boston Red Sux- 2009 American League Champions”? Seems the the tees are donated

to an organization called World Vision, who also collects mis-printed apparel from the NFL and the NBA to distribute it to people living in impoverished nations. Neat. Bud Selig still sucks, though...

I think we’ll call it quits on this week but, before I go- happy birthday Shelby. I love you.

That’s it for this week. I’ll be

back next time with more news, notes, and rumors from the sports world. As always, send your ques-tions, praises, or gripes to [email protected], or via snail mail to: Bean Spouts c/o Spirit Newspapers P.O. Box 33 Pooler, GA 31322.

God, bless America.

Flexible ductwork is so popu-lar and is in many homes today. It has some advantages over metal ducts, in that you will have fewer joints that can leak, but because of its flexibility, it can easily be kinked, twisted or even torn. Here are some tips for getting the most from your flexi-duct. Mastic is sticky, messy and stinky, but it still is the best way to seal all joints in your heating and cooling system, no matter what type of ducting you have. It comes in a variety of containers and dis-pensers. It’s been around for cen-turies and hasn’t changed all that

much. Use it with all other sealing choices as extra insurance. One popular way of connect-ing flexible duct to other air-sup-ply components is with cable ties. You want to pull the insulation back to expose the actual duct-work, and then pull it up onto the metal connection and install a plastic cable tie as tightly as you can. Apply a little mastic around the connection to ensure that it is as airtight as it can be. Now pull the insulation up over the connec-tion and use another cable tie to secure it. Tape also can be used, but use aluminum tape, not duct tape. Duct tape never should be used for sealing ducts. It won’t hold at all.

The aluminum tape does a pretty good job on metal ductwork, but not as much on flexi-duct. If your ductwork is suspended or hanging, make sure that it isn’t kinked or pinched. You can add more pipe strapping if you need to in order to prevent this. You even can use a piece of cardboard between the bottom of the strap and the ductwork to act as a wider support and prevent this type of pinching. Plastic strapping also seems less likely to cut or tear the ducts than the metal types. In most cases, the insulation around these ducts is sufficient, but if you need to add more, you can. Just make sure they are sealed up tightly before adding it.

* * *Q: We have an older home with glass shower doors that slide. One of them has been hard to open for a while, and the other one is start-ing to do the same thing. What can we do to fix these, or will we just have to replace them both? -- T.E.

A: These type of doors have built-in wheels that slide on the upper part of the track. Try to carefully lift the door a little and remove it from the track. Then clean the wheels and track thoroughly, and apply a light lubricant to both. They should work much better af-ter this treatment. If you have to replace the doors, it’s not very dif-ficult, but we would suggest trying this first.

* * *If you are one of those people who likes to make things for the home or to give as gifts, you’ll love our Hardware Chess Set. The plans are easy to follow, and use a vari-ety of different hardware items to make the individual chess pieces. You may already have some of these odds and ends lying around in your workshop. If not, it won’t cost much to put a complete set together. We’ll show you how. Just send your request, along with $1 ($2 in Canada -- no coins, please) and a self-addressed, stamped envelope, to The Super Handy-man here at the newspaper and we will gladly send you a copy of the plans. Of course, you’ll have to master the game yourself!

* * *SIMPLE TRICK CUTS DOOR-PAINTING TIME NEARLY IN HALF Painting a door is a two-part job. You have to paint one side, flip it and then paint the other. Well, we have a way to cut that lengthy process in half, sort of. Once you have the door taken down and laid out on your sawhorses to be painted, drive a couple of nails into each end of the door. Place the door on the sawhorses so that the nails are supporting the door

on each end. Now you can paint one side, flip it by the nails, place it back down so the nails are on the sawhorses again and paint the other side. You still have to paint both sides, but you won’t have to wait until the first side has dried to get to the other one.

* * *Dear Carrells: Here’s a tip for you and your readers. I’ve gone back

into painting, and am doing quite well. One thing that I remem-bered was to paint from your light source. Start at your light source -- a window or lamp -- and work away from it. It makes it much easier to spot any missed areas and wet edges. I always bring a high-intensity light with me just for this purpose, and I get great results us-ing this method. -- S.D.GETTING THE MOST OUT OF

The Rohr automobile is ex-tremely rare. Even back in the 1970s, less than a half-dozen of them had been rescued by collec-tors or museums. Obviously, these, like many fine European cars, were annihilated in the ravages of World War II -- lost in bombings, fires or scrapped for the value of their steel.

Fortunately, one of the few sur-viving Rohrs is this very attractive 1933 F-Type sport cabriolet, obvi-ously a luxury car, judging by its fine design.

The manufacturer also built a one-of-a-kind classic for a 1933 German automobile show: a radi-cally streamlined fastback four-door pillarless hardtop (22 years before this style was revived in the U.S.). Its sloping grille was differ-ent from the one on the car seen here. It, too, has been preserved by an admiring owner, and was pur-chased years ago by Edgar E. Rohr (the past president of the Antique

Automobile Club of America, but not related to Hans Rohr, founder of the automobile company). (See the September/October AACA magazine for information and pic-tures).

Hans left his automobile com-pany while it was still function-ing (as did Ransom E. Olds, Harry C. Stutz, Robert C. Hupp, Henry A. Lozier and Billy Durant, who founded General Motors and left the organization twice, to eventu-ally found Durant Motors and then leave it as well). The first four men mentioned in this paragraph went on to establish new automobile companies named for their initials: REO, H.C.S., RCH and H.A.L.

Are there other Rohr automo-biles still remaining, but not yet discovered? That’s quite possible, and car collectors are fanning out around the globe in search of hid-den automotive treasures -- cars, as well as books, catalogs and ar-tifacts.

1933 ROHRONE OF THE VERY FEW SURVIVORS FROM THIS HIGH-QUALITY LINEBY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI

Dear Tom and Ray: My husband actually said this: “If you ask Click and Clack, and they say I did something wrong, I’ll stop doing it.” So here we go: When my husband backs my new Toyota minivan out of our driveway (he’s backing it down a hill), he doesn’t use the brakes. He just shifts it from reverse into drive as the minivan is still rolling backward, and then goes forward. I gasp when he does this, and he says, “What?” I tell him he’s going to ruin my transmission. He gives me a list of excuses why I shouldn’t worry about it. When he almost has me convinced, he says: “And by the way, I’m not even sure I did anything. But IF I DID, I’m sure it

won’t hurt the car.” How’s that for covering his bases? But I think he made a crucial mistake in agreeing to abide by your decision. Give me some hope, guys! I need to know the correct answer, because my newly driving teenagers are often in the car with us, and I want them to learn to drive correctly. -- Dar-lene

TOM: Well, I’m less worried about your teenagers picking up bad driving habits than I am about them picking up some awful debat-ing skills.

RAY: Yeah. I think “I didn’t do it, but IF I DID” tends to be a sure-fire loser in most marital disagree-ments, at least according to my brother’s four ex-wives.

TOM: And four different judges!

RAY: What he’s doing IS bad for the car, Darlene. Cars can’t say “ouch.” But if they could, yours would be saying “ouch” and grabbing its transmission when your husband did that.

TOM: He’s using the transmission in a way it was never designed to be used -- to stop the car. That’s what the brakes are for. And they tend to be cheaper than transmis-sions to replace.

RAY: While reversing directions without stopping the car first may not do a tremendous amount of harm if you’re going, say, half a mile an hour, if you’re backing downhill at several miles per hour and then change directions, you’re putting a serious load on the internal parts of the transmission.

TOM: And the damage isn’t con-fined to the transmission itself. Other parts of the drive train and suspension get jolted, too. Instead of being allowed to stop and start moving the other way, each part is suddenly slammed against the next part down the line. This leads to premature wear, and large outlays of money.

RAY: Here’s how you can demon-strate the concept to him. Next time you’re in the supermarket, let him go ahead of you, and then have him walk backward, at nor-mal speed, to where you’re stand-ing. Tell him that when you tap him on the shoulder, you want him to stop and then move forward.

TOM: Then, while he’s still walk-ing backward, slam him in the tuchis with the grocery cart, hard enough so that he starts moving forward.

RAY: When he’s grabbing his back-side and shouting: “Ow! What’d you do that for?” just say: “What? I didn’t do anything. But IF I DID, it might be a reminder to stop shift-ing from reverse to drive while the car’s still moving.”
