Socktober
October is Mission Month and Socktober is an initiative of the Catholic Mission. The ‘sock it to something’ concept is an Australian expression, that means to strike out at. This year, our school Chaplain, Mrs Christine Maltby has coordinated Socktober. Her aim was to increase the children’s awareness of social issues, such as poverty, child labour, child trafficking, homelessness and lack of education. On Wednesday this week, all children were encouraged to wear crazy socks to school. We also hosted a sausage sizzle meal deal, with all funds raised supporting Catholic Mission. Mrs Maltby visited each class and they all made a soccer ball using plastic bags, old socks, string, bubble wrap, styrofoam, scrunched up paper and old shirts. The purpose of this activity was to teach the children how children in third world countries have very different access to resources. The students then compared their soccer ball with those in our sports shed and discussed those who are disadvantaged and marginalised in our world. We thank Mrs Maltby for enriching the lives of our students and increasing their awareness of global social issues.

On Saturday evening at 6:30pm, we invite all members of our school and wider community to join us for a Family Mass. Each term we host a Family Mass at the St Mary’s Church. This is a wonderful opportunity for us all to gather as a community in prayer. We have many students who have been working hard to learn the ropes of altar serving. Mrs Christine Maltby coordinates altar serving for the St Mary’s Parish and she has been absolutely thrilled with the dedication displayed by all students. We would like to congratulate all children on becoming altar servers. They will altar serve at our School Masses and also at Family Masses.
