WITH A GRATEFUL HEARTThank you. These two simple words hold such meaning as I reflect on the 2014-2015 school year at Lakewood Catholic Academy. My first year as part of this faith community has reminded me of the value of gratitude which the ancient philosopher Cicero reminds us is the greatest virtue and the parent of all other virtues.

This year we proudly celebrated the 10th anniversary of the founding of our school and to further celebrate this landmark year, I would like to offer 10 things that I am grateful for at Lakewood Catholic Academy . . .

I challenge you to ask yourself what are you most grateful for? My hope is that LCA is among your list of blessings. Thank you for being an important part of what I am most thankful for – Lakewood Catholic Academy.

I am grateful for the donors and benefactors listed in this annual report. Their generosity and gifts both big and small all made a difference in the lives of our students, faculty and staff.

I am grateful for our students. They bring such joy to our hallways and classrooms. Their academic and athletic accomplishments are amazing and their service-work locally, nationally and internationally is remarkable.

I am grateful for our Holy Family Learning Center. Holy Family is a home away from home for families desiring a faith-filled day care environment for their children as young as six weeks old.

I am grateful for the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine and our supporting pastors (both past and present) for their spiritual leadership and extraordinary vision in creating a new model of Catholic elementary education.

I am grateful for our faculty, staff and administrators, all of whom educate, love and care for children in the most inspiring ways.

I am grateful that LCA knows how to celebrate. From Nights at the Races, to a record-breaking gala, from marching in parades, to Sippin’ with the Saints, our school family knows the importance of celebrating success.

I am grateful for our Board of Directors and Committee Members who help to lead LCA. They are a dedicated group of professionals who have strengthened the school with their fiscal management and strategic planning.

I am grateful for our parents - the unsung heroes of our school. They volunteer with SSO and athletics, they chaperone field trips and work in the dining hall, they sacrifice to make this incredible education possible for their children.

I am grateful for the high-fives and handshakes with students and morning conversations with parents at the front doors of our school each day. In these moments we are more than a school, we are a family.

I am grateful for God’s presence in all that we do. Faith can be felt in every corner of our school and it is at the heart of our mission.

Father Workman, Pastor of St. Clement and St. James Parishes, celebrates Mass in honor of all the second graders who made their First Communion this year. LCA continues to have strong ties to our local supporting parishes and we are grateful for the spiritual leadership of our pastors.

ROOTED IN FAITHStudents continuing their spiritual journey at LCA.

On June 5, 2015, Lakewood Catholic Academy sent 13 students and teachers on a service trip to Nicaragua. LCA partnered with Free the Children to organize the mission experience. Free the Children is an international charity and educational partner, working both domestically and internationally to empower and enable youth to be agents of change. Free The Children has constructed more than 650 schools internationally, and its health and clean water initiatives have empowered more than one million beneficiaries.

While in Nicaragua the Saints of LCA worked in the rural community of El Trapiche. The students and staff members were responsible for helping to build a playground at the school. They also were responsible for helping to expand the school’s garden that the Nicaraguan students would study and care for as part of their academic coursework. Additionally, the crop from the garden would also be shared with the entire community. The LCA students not only shared their hands in service but also their hearts in prayer when they donated over 100 rosaries that were made by their classmates at LCA.

Having the opportunity to visit Nicaragua did not only mean working hard; our travelers had the ability to truly understand and appreciate the culture they were visiting. Local villagers came and performed native dances and taught the LCA students and staff a few dance moves. The students also had a picnic lunch atop a volcano, visited an indigenous pottery making store, and enjoyed a visit to the Pacific Ocean where they participated in a retreat on the beach. The students gathered

in prayer each day and celebrated Eucharistic Liturgy with the local community at a nearby Catholic parish.

“In our quest to educate leaders in service of God and to the world it is critical that we share our gifts locally, nationally and internationally,” President Brian Sinchak commented.

Lakewood Catholic Academy has an amazing tradition of serving our local community at St. Pat’s Hunger Center, contributing to a number of national charities, and now LCA is proud to offer international volunteer experiences to its students, one of the first Catholic schools to do so for students in seventh and eighth grade.

“I am so grateful to those numerous families, friends and alumni who donated to make this service trip possible for our students. With your help LCA is changing the world,” Sinchak concluded.

Plans are already underway for both a national and international volunteer trip in 2016!

CELEBRATING TEN YEARS OF EXCELLENCE IN CATHOLIC EDUCATION IN LAKEWOOD

10th Anniversary Gala

A NIGHT TO REMEMBERGuests enjoyed dinner catered by Lago East Bank and bid on chances to win fabulous evenings out and unique LCA experiences with Mr. Sinchak. A record breaking $160,000 was raised to support the Fund for LCA.


A sold-out crowd of over 400 LCA supporters filled the gym, which was transformed by twinkling lights and spectacular decor to celebrate ten years of academic excellence and Catholic faith. Guests had the opportunity to bid on fabulous silent auction items or sign up for the raffle, the wine pull or to attend themed parties.

Mrs. Maureen Arbeznik was honored for her contributions and commitment to LCA with the school’s most prestigious award, The Insignis Award. This award recognizes an individual dedicated to advancing the mission of the school through his or her vision, energy and faith. Mrs. Arbeznik shared heartfelt memories and accepted the award on behalf of all of the leaders, volunteers and students who helped open the school in 2005 and all of the people who have been involved during the years since. The evening continued with a live auction led by our very own energetic auctioneer, Mr. Brian Sinchak. Donors generously raised their paddles to support the Teacher Investment Appeal. This appeal will support three pillars of our academic program: professional development, keeping salaries competitive and innovative curriculum. Nearly $50,000 was raised to support this appeal and enable our school to attract, train, retain and reward our dedicated teachers. A simple video of students sharing why they love their LCA teachers was shown which brought about both tears and generosity (this video can be

viewed on the Lakewood Catholic Academy page on YouTube and Facebook).

The evening concluded with some unique and grand packages that our generous supporters could not resist. A record-breaking $160,000 was raised on this special evening. The success would not be possible without our dedicated volunteers who tirelessly gave their time and talent, led by LCA parents, Julia Artbauer, Jenni Baker, Elizabeth Grace, Joseph Kalinowski, Alysia McKean and Galen Schuerlein. Thank you to everyone who supported the 10th Anniversary Gala.

A celebration of ten years would not be possible without the heart and soul of the school! The students and faculty celebrated the following week holding balloons, wearing party hats and blowing horns while singing “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” to LCA.

Over 100 LCA families and friends marched in the Lakewood Fourth of July parade down Lake Avenue. Mr. Brian Sinchak and Mrs. Maureen Arbeznik waved proudly from a convertible as LCA Saints walked, sharing Smarties with the people lining the streets. Lolly the Trolley followed behind the LCA bunch filled with more supporters waving to the crowd.

Mayor Michael Summers honored LCA as Grand Marshal sharing, “The Fourth of July community celebration is a wonderful opportunity to highlight Lakewood Catholic Academy’s outstanding achievements and hard work. The founders of LCA recognized that times were changing and enrollments were declining. They decided to be proactive to secure their future. Ten years later, we are celebrating that decision and the successful partnership that

developed as a result of this forward-thinking.”

It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate not only the school, but the impact that LCA, its families and campus plays in the vitality of Lakewood.

LCA was also Grand Marshal in 2005 when the school opened.
