1 Introduction

The student chapter of the Society of Optics and Photonics from Centro de Inves-

tigaciones en Optica A.C. (CIO) based in Leon, Gto. Mexico has the purpose of

promoting outreach events with the local community at different education levels.

During this year we have held several activities involving the promotion of our

Chapter that we want to share with all the SPIE student community. Each year,

since 2005, the student chapters of the CIO have been organizing several events

in our institution in order to promote the wide fields covered by optics. In this

brief note we want to present some of the events organized this year in order to

motivate other chapters to promote theirs.

3 Chapter Activities

3.1 Informative Talks about SPIE Membership

In order to raise our member’s chapter roster, we organized several talks presenting

the benefits offered by SPIE ,for example: The annual scholarship application,

discounts in registration conferences, travel grant applications etc. We gave brief

explanations of deadlines and how to apply for all of them taking into account

advice from some members that already obtained that grant, for instance, David

Serrano, who obtained one of the 2011 Scholarships.

6 Chapter 3. Chapter Activities

3.2 Informal Talks

One of the events organized were the informal talks with researchers and students,

not only from the CIO but also from distinguished visitors such as entrepreneurs

from our city. From the Secretariat of Economy Development of Guanajuato

subsecretary , Froylan Salas. The National Council on Science and Technology

(CONACYT) director (Dr. Enrique Villa Rivera ) and Dr. Maria Yzuel among

others, former president of SPIE.

3.3 Introductory course: Machinery Shop

Another event promoted by the chapter was the organization of several specialized

courses to gain experience and knowledge in different areas besides Optics. We

began with an introductory course called Machinery Shop in which we learned

the basic skills to manufacture mechanical components for our projects. We are

Page 18: SPIESTUDENTCHAPTER - SPIE Homepagespiestudentchapter centro de investigaciones en optica, a.c.´ loma del bosque no. 115, lomas del campestre 37150 le on, guanajuato, m´ exico.´

these two outstanding women some of the beautiful places that this city has to

offer.

We headed to Guanajuato at 11 o’clock in the morning to arrive there at noon.

One of the characteristics of Guanajuato city is that it is built on very hilly ground

and the city has a network of underground tunnels that are used as roads, making

this place really unique in the world.

Figure 3.8: Guanajuato Tunnels railroads, one of the beautiful characteristics ofthe city and making this place unique in the world.

3.7. Guanajuato City Tour with Prof. Maria J. Yzuel 13

We began our tour visiting The Hidalgo Market to see and buy some of Gua-

najuato popular handcrafts. After showing them some of the typical dresses and

candy of Mexico we headed to the Union Garden where we ate a traditional meal

listening to Mexican popular songs like “Maria Bonita”, “Amor Eterno” and other

distinctive Guanajuato music. The Union Garden, Guanajuato’s most important

meeting place, along with the Church of San Diego and the Juarez Theater are

together the heart of the city.

Figure 3.9: Union Garden, one of the most beautiful meeting places of the citywere the people can eat traditional dishes of Mexico while listening to traditionalmusic.

After having a nice meal with Prof. Yzuel and Prof. Quiroga we visited the

city’s Mummy Museum were the mummified bodies of local people (a consequence

of the peculiar mineral composition of the region’s soil) have been on display since

Page 24: SPIESTUDENTCHAPTER - SPIE Homepagespiestudentchapter centro de investigaciones en optica, a.c.´ loma del bosque no. 115, lomas del campestre 37150 le on, guanajuato, m´ exico.´

1870. The museum consists of various exhibitions halls, in which 119 mummified

bodies are on exhibition to the general public. The collection consists 79 women,

21 men and 19 children, one of which is the smallest mummy in the world.

Figure 3.10: Guanajuato Mummy Museum presents the mummified bodies oflocal people (a consequence of the peculiar mineral composition of the region’ssoil) have been on display since 1870.

The next place we visited was The Kiss alley. It is a traditional narrow alley,

which has two balconies opposite to each other with just 27 inches apart; this

alley was the scenario of a romantic legend that tells the tragic story of two young

sweethearts, one of whom was assassinated by her own father.

Another place we visited was “Alhondiga de Granaditas” .It is a very typical

place of the beginnings of Mexico’s struggle for Independence where a Regional

Museum is located presenting the major pre-Hispanic collections, handcraft works

of art and historic items from Mexico’s past.

Figure 3.12: The “Alhodiga de Granaditas” represents the beginning of Mexico’sstruggle for independence, an important fight took place here when was an impor-tant storehouse in those times.

In order to finish this pleasant trip, we visited the Pipila’s Monument to take

a picture of us all with the beautiful panoramic view presented. At this point we

were told a description of the city explained by a little and fun local boy.

3.10 Transit of Venus

Whit two telescopes we saw the memorable Transit of Venus. In this activity, we

invited the whole community of the CIO to witness the transit of Venus in front

of the Sun. This astronomical event occurs when Venus passes directly between

the Sun and the Earth. This phenomena is analogous to solar eclipses caused by

the Moon, but the distance and the apparent size of Venus make Venus seem like

a small black dot crossing the Sun’s visible face.
