Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth

SPIC MACAY is a voluntary, non-profit movement which began in 1977. The architect of this movement is Padma Shri Dr. Kiran Seth, Professor Emeritus at IIT Delhi. Born in 1949, Dr. Kiran Seth is an Indian academician and is known profoundly as the founder of SPIC MACAY. In 2009, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India for his immense contribution to the field of Art.

Inaugural CeremonyThe event commenced with the auspicious lighting of the lamp, followed by a melodious musical performance and an equally mesmerising dance performance on the Ganesh Stuti. The Convention bore witness to an inspiring address by the Principal of Delhi Public School Surat, Mr. P. Vamshi Krishna.

After being felicitated, Dr. Kiran Seth enlightened the audience about the historical background of SPIC MACAY. Thereafter he formally introduced the Intensives and laid down the essential ground rules for the event. He also spoke about SPIC MACAY venturing out into the realms of educating the young minds, laying emphasis on the learning process through different forms of Classical Music and Dance.

A panoramic View Of Events

A motion picture ‘The Making of a Mahatma’ was showcased for the students and teachers to accentuate the significance of core values of honesty, non-violence and perseverance.

Simultaneously there was a Volunteers Meeting and an Open Session with the Potential Volunteers of the city with Dr. Kiran Seth to discuss about the importance of Art and the possibilities of making it an integral part of one’s life.

Mellifluous Performance By Music Maestros

The cynosure of the event was a magniloquent musical performance by Padma Bhushan Dr. N. Rajam who played the violin and an equally eloquent performance by Hindustani Classical Vocalist, Shri Chintan Upadhyay.

Yoga Session By Dr. Kiran Seth

“ Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self ”

The event turned out to be an enriching experience for all as they attended the Yoga Session by Dr. Kiran Seth in the wee hours of the morning. The session was primarily on ‘Naad Yoga’ and ‘Hatha Yoga’ which emphasized on how sound vibrations together with an integration of ethical ideas, a well-balanced diet and also meditation are essential for spiritual development.

The event also bore witness to an interactive Workshop taken by Dr. Kiran Seth on the ‘Aarambh Module’, which highlighted how classical music taught through different bodily movements can ameliorate memory, emotional intelligence and concentration in toddlers. The parents through this workshop perceived the importance of Classical Music for their toddlers.

A two-day workshop commenced on April 13 and 14 by Shri Chintan Upadhyay in which he took introductory instructional sessions for uninitiated music students to more advanced lessons on the Dhrupad tradition for students with the background of music training.

Kalashree Ayswaria Wariar, is a Mohiniyattam Dancer, Arts Educator, Researcher , Choreographer and Film Maker currently based in Vadodara. In her workshop the significance of Mohiniyattam as a Dance Form, the Mudra’s and the other intricacies involved in the teaching learning process were discussed in detail accentuating the creativity of Dance as one of the finest aspects of Art.

An ingenious workshop By Smt. Gangubai Amaliya

A Pithora artist from the Rathwa community of the Bhil tribe of Madhya Pradesh, Smt. Gangubai Amaliya explained with ease the creative ramifications required for creating these beautiful paintings which depict all aspects of nature and modern elements in their relative positions, together with people and their ancestors in the form of a map.

A Creative workshop By Shri Chandrakant Mahala

“ The artist’s vocation is to send light into the human heart ”

This iterate very well portrays the creative genius of Shri. Chandrakant Mahala who during the two-day workshop laid down the fundamental aspects of Warli Painting which is a tribal art of Madhya Pradesh and is still practiced today. The people present in the workshop were familiarized with the intricate decorative patterns of Warli Painting depicting rituals, folk tales, traditions and other aspects of daily life.

This excerpt adequately summarizes the efforts put into the teaching learning process during the Workshops of the Intensives, as a result of which spectacular performances were exhibited by the trainees, which included paintings as well as song and dance recitals.

“ Dance is the hidden language of the soul ”

An alluring and flawless Mohiniyattam performance by Kalashree Ayswaria Wariar reiterated the beauty of the phrase mentioned above. Her magniloquent performance was appositely acknowledged by a rousing plaudit from the crowd.

The event concluded with the Pledge and a vote of thanks to the stalwarts as well as the dignitaries who had graced the occasion for the two days , thus making the event an enriching experience for all who attended it, accentuating the significance of striking and maintaining the right balance between culture and education.
