X T R AC T- 1 FULL DISCHARGE SYSTEM

MAIN FUNCTIONS

Phase 1The agitator rotationpushes the producttowards the dischargevalve.Once in the valve,the product is fluidizedin a gas stream andpneumaticallyconveyed into acyclone – dust filter, inwhich the solids andconveying gases areseparated.When the agitator nolonger touches theresidual product heel,this phase is complete.

Phase 2The spray nozzlesmounted in the tophead of the vessel areactivated, energetically blowing on the bottom, fluidizing the residual product heeland making it available to be removed as part of the pneumatic transfer.It is possible to discharge 100% of the product left on the bottom of the vessel.

FEATURESThe main components are:• A ring with special spray nozzles installed in the head of the vessel.The ring never comes in direct contact with the slurry or the solid

• A special solids discharge plug valve mounted flush to the internal vessel walland tangentially to the bottom of the vessel; the valve can be sterilized andwashed

• A cyclone–dust filter

The project, wherever necessary, takes into account all of the pharmaceuticalapplications and requirements, including: operational safety measures,GMP construction, cleaning in place (CIP), prevention of operator exposure and/orcontamination of the product, sterilization.Xtract-1 is being used on a vast number of applications.

X A M - 1

XAM-1, a collaboration with Carl ZeissMicroImaging GmbH and Hellma GmbH,introduces a new generation of valvescombining on-line measurementof residual solvents with solid productsampling.

MAIN FUNCTIONS

Solids SamplingStarting from the rest position, the plugvalve moves into the drying chamberand collects the sample.Then, it pulls back to the discharge position, deposits the sample into a removablecontainer, and finally returns to the rest position.

In-line NIR spectroscopy of residual solventThe plug has an internal cavity that houses a diffused-reflection probe, with a sapphirewindow on the end.The probe is connected to a NIR spectrometer via a fiber optic cable.This system generates real-time, quantitative analytical data corresponding to theresidual solvent amount that remains in the solid, which can be used for automaticcontrol of the drying process.The measurements are automatic, and can be made at set intervals or continuously.

WashingAn actuated ball valve, with a pass-through hole, is positioned between the samplingvalve and the drying chamber.In the sample discharge position, the ball valve can be closed to wash the productcontact surface area, preventing contamination between subsequent samples andguaranteeing the elimination of eventual crusts on the sapphire window.

CalibrationThe functional integration of the solids sampling and the NIR spectroscopymeasurement in the same unit allowsfor a quick chemometric model onwhich to base the quantitative analysis.

Microwave use today finds practicalapplications in vacuum drying usedon filter-dryers and on vacuum dryers.This system can be utilized withpolar products (i.e. water)or polarizable, with ionic compounds

or conductive (i.e. carbon black).Microwave drying is a complex technology since theindustrial application depends on many parametersvarying as a function of: the dryiness, the dryingtemperature, the degree of vacuum, the physical andgeometrical properties of the crystals, the productquantity and many others.Moreover undesired side effects can be observed such as:arcing, microwaves leakage, hot spots, reflected power.To prevent such side effects and to optimize the utilizationof this technology 3V Cogeim collaborated with the“Dipartimento di Ingegneria dei Materiali e dell'Ambiente -Facoltà di Ingegneria dell’Università degli Studi di Modenae Reggio Emilia”(Italy), which implemented the theoreticalstudies and modeling of the microwave distribution undervacuum in environments similar to the ones of the dryer.

MAIN FUNCTIONSConventional drying is performed by a heat transfer to theproduct via the dryer internal walls, heated by a jacket,and is integrated with the electromagnetic energy given directly to the product by themicrowave generator.The combination of the two types of heating brings out and complements the specificcharacteristics of each of the two systems with remarkable final benefits.The system is made up of the following parts:• Microwave generator and control and modulation system• Wave guide• Filter-dryer or dryer

Microwave generator and control and modulation systemThe microwave generator, commonly called Magnetron, is suitable for installation in safe area.The Magnetron power supply, the microwave tuner and thecirculator are to be installed at a close distance.

Wave guideThe wave guide is made up of a metal channel that guidesthe microwaves from the generator to the drying equipment.

Filter-dryer or dryerIt is provided with an external heating jacket and heatedagitator.Some characteristics and specific components are modifiedto make it ideal for microwave use, specifically the internalgeometry, the internal surface characteristics, the sealsystem, the choice of special materials, etc.
