BUDGIE’S BIT

MARK HAILSTONES …..SPECIAL SOUVENIR PROGRAMME MARK HAILSTONES …..SPECIAL SOUVENIR PROGRAMME

MARK HAILSTONES We signed Mark at the beginning of the 2003/2004 season when we were building a squad from scratch. He had made an impression on us during the early training and games involved in those pre-season preparations. Mark had been recommended by Davie Coates who had worked with him at Kilpatrick Juveniles and Davie was convinced that he would be worth having a look at. In hindsight, he can pat himself on the back for that recommendation. Although he wasn’t the tallest of the players, it was obvious that he would more than make up for his lack of height by displaying a real energy and tenacity that was above average. He went on to make a significant contribution to what was a memorable title winning debut season for us and I’m sure the majority of opposition defenders were glad to see the back of the wee man as we moved up into the first division. Season after season he continued to produce the goods on a regular basis and as he matured as a player he also became more flexible; being employed equally effective in many roles, i.e. as a main striker, as a wide player, as an impact player coming off the bench and even as a full back. Alt-hough maybe not prolific, in his ten seasons with us he has scored an admirable amount of goals and many of those have also appeared in bigger games and many could be placed in the ‘spectacular’ bracket. Football is often full of irony and taking that into account it is maybe no surprise that one of the few times he wasn’t able to supply a ‘big game’ strike for us was in possibly our biggest game, the Scot-tish Junior Cup Final at Rugby Park. Trailing 2-1 and entering the final few minutes, the wee man found space in Auchinleck Talbots box and as their keeper came off his line Mark attempted to lift the ball over him and into the net which would have taken the game into extra time. For a split sec-ond I thought the perfect moment had arrived for both Mark and the club where he would once again come up with the goods at the best possible time and on the biggest stage possible. Unfortu-nately the ball sailed agonisingly over the keeper and crossbar and the rest is history. I felt for the wee man at that point but there is no way anyone would dream of holding that miss against him as he has more than made up for it by playing such a big part in our successes over the past ten years. In this day and age not many players can claim this length of service to one club and I am delighted that Marks loyalty and effort is being recognised in this way by our supporters. I would personally like to thank him for all his hard work over the past ten seasons. Billy McGhie Clydebank FC Manager

Clydebank FC

Running a semi-professional team can be an expensive business - especially one in the top league of the

Juniors. Some teams have input from monied investors, a social club or are perhaps resourced from the sale

of assets. Clydebank FC don't have access to any of these income sources ... but we do have the backing of a

loyal support - the 12th man.

The Bankies have recently launched a scheme to allow fans to commit a regular sum towards maintaining

the club's budget and to help to build on our successful 1st season in the Super Premier - where we punched

above our weight. The scheme is called the 100 Club - and that's what we're looking for people to commit to

- a minimum of £100 per season. That's £8.33 a month or around £1.92 a week.

If you feel you can sign up to this - or have friends or family that wish to support the club ( or perhaps in

memory of a loved one ) - then here's how to do it.

Set up a standing order at the bank ( preferred method )

Pay cash or a cheque made payable to CLYDEBANK FC - send to 3 McLaren Crescent, Glasgow G20 0LD or see

Club Director Bill Abraham at a game

If you are setting up a standing order or sending a cheque then please let us know that you're doing so - by

mailing [email protected]. This is also the address if you want more detail.

In return for your input you will receive an exclusive enamel badge and be put into a draw for a matchworn

jersey at the end of the season. You will also be listed on this page in the matchday programme - unless

you'd prefer not to be.

The money will be put to good use and will help us to compete at the highest level.

100 Club News ‘He’d been with us since the beginning and when we reached the cup final - the pinnacle of the Junior game - he knew what it meant to everyone.’

FROM THE

BOARDROOM

MARK HAILSTONES …..SPECIAL SOUVENIR PROGRAMME MARK HAILSTONES …..SPECIAL SOUVENIR PROGRAMME

Ten years is a long time for any player to spend at any club and it is right that such longevity is acknowledged by a special match. Mark Hailstones has been with the club since we began our journey to re-establish the name of Clydebank FC in Scottish football. In those ten seasons he has given everyone connected with the club many wonderful memories. Crucial and often spectacular goals have been a feature of his Bankies career and he has performed well in a number of positions over the years. The sheer variety of goals Mark has scored has been amazing. Stunning free kicks, screamers from distance, class finishes from close range - they have all be there and thanks to Bankies TV can be enjoyed for years to come. My own favourites among the many goals are two that might not readily spring to mind. Away to Whitletts in our Super League First Division he scored a flashing header after a great near-post run, the kind of run I love seeing strikers make. And the other was a shot from distance at home to Petershill in the Central League Cup to get us back into the match. What a finish and it turned the game. Mark has also been a fine ambassador for the club. During our momentous run to the final of the Scottish Junior Cup in 2009 we received our fair share of publicity and there were often requests for players to represent the club. Mark was one of those players who readily made himself available and represented Clydebank FC impressively. That Scottish Cup run meant a lot to Mark and to everyone at the club. When we beat Pollok at Millburn Park in the semi-final no one was more pleased than Mark. He’d been with us since the beginning and when we reached the final - the pinnacle of the Junior game - he knew what it meant to everyone. On behalf of everyone at the club, I’d like to thank Mark Hailstones for ten great years and creating football memories that will be recalled fondly for years and decades to come. Well done Mark and enjoy your day. Gordon Robertson Chairman Clydebank FC

Mark Hailstones….Thanks for the memories.

The only time I had to hide for an interview with a Bankie, as Wee Mark was terrified of having Alan Jack interrupt it! Stevie Dallas was smarter by cornering the Wee man at the back of the team bus as we made our way back home from Bellshill, on the day Mark's amazing free-kick helped secure promotion to the Super Premier, Scored some amazing goals, I'm glad I was able to capture some of them on video camera for the fans to enjoy for many years to come.

John Dunbar (Kingjad)

The one thing about Mark being here so long is that when a new player arrives at the club He is one of the first to get the boys involved in the banter he makes sure no-one is left out, even if it means playing jokes on people. You can have a good laugh with him as he is one of the most outspoken people in the dressing room. He is good for team morale and I hope he stays next season as he is good for the team, but I wish him luck in whatever he decides to do.

His testimonial will be a good day, and it is nice to see some-one staying loyal to the team, being there from the start all the way to the top league. His dedication and loyalty to the club is something which the fans obviously love as he is seen as an icon here. And it was no surprise when he was includ-ed in the Hall of Fame this year. On the negative side of things, some of the clothes he wears are definitely out there!!

Ian Gold ( Bankies mid-fielder)

Like most of us, having followed The Bankies for many a year we've all seen our fair share of good players and for me Mark Hailstones is right up there. To serve any club for 10 years is almost unheard of these days, especially when it's for the love of the game. I still remember Mark coming along to the club and looking like he should have been in bed for school the next day. At our first game over at keanie Park, there was a board inside the pavilion with the teams on it and somebody quipped "Hailstones? The suns shining oot there!" How many times did the wee man go onto make it feel like the sun was always "shining oot there!!" We all have our favourite moments, my personal one is at Glenhead Park as Mark wrapped up the league title in our first season in the West Region with a glorious free kick to wrap up a 5-0 win. The other standout moment still gives me tears when I think about it, as we all stood in Clydebank Town Hall having lost the Scottish Cup Final, there up on the stage is Mark in tears, totally gutted. His tears were our tears that day. Today is a deserved occasion for a man who gave Clydebank FC 100% for almost exactly ten years and as supporter and former director I'd like to thank him for all his efforts as we've rebuilt our club from scratch.

Paul Cummings (PtB)

Watching Clydebank FC over the last ten years since their return to the Junior game has resulted in some of the finest days I have enjoyed in 25 years as a Bankies fan and one of the major reasons for that has been Mark Hailstones. The first time I saw him score in a competitive fixture was an away game to Lesmahagow in a 2-0 win in September 2003 - I remember him striding forward into the opponents half and shouting at him to pass the ball to someone I considered to be in a better position and him ignoring me and firing one past the keeper to put Bank-ies ahead!! He has scored many goals for The Bankies , some great goals for The Bankies and some crucial goals for The Bankies but I still vividly recall that first one and thinking maybe if I shout at this guy more often he will score loads!! Thanks Mark for all your efforts and commitment to The Bankies cause , your obvious enjoyment of the game and pride that is evident every time you pull on that shirt has endeared you to the Bank-ies faithful over this last decade and along with your massive contribution to our club's continuing journey ensures you are fully deserving of this game today. Enjoy your day Mark and if I shout at you to pass - just ignore me the way you did 10 years ago!!!

Davie Lundberg (Killer Ken)

Mark has gave us a good few memories, but the main one would have to be the game against Blairgowrie, he really showed that day what it means to play for the Bankies, he never gives up and just when you need a goal up he steps up and delivers a magnificent over head kick...that will never leave me. One other interesting fact, Mark is the only Bankies goalie not to concede a goal....i will always remember how he pulled on the goalie top that day and everyone thought the smallest guy on the park, we are in trouble now but credit to him he done well.

Tracy Biggar ( Teeny 05)

Favourite Mark moment - Has to be the free kick V Coltness at the Hibby, and then how he tried to dine out on that free kick by being unsuccessful with every attempt until the one V Bellshill in the promotion winning season

Davie Harkins (Former Clydebank Director)

Been a Bankies fan since my dad started taking me as a child. 1st game I can remember was v Queens Park in Sept 68. Best Bankies memories were Dundee match to clinch promotion to Premier League in 77, Scottish Cup semi v Celtic in 90 and Scottish Junior Cup Final v Auchinleck. Have to thank KJ for my Mark memories, as I'm rarely at games. League clincher v Coltness, and injury-time winner v Blairgowrie are my favourite goals from Mark, all the best to the wee man for tonight.

Stuart McLearie (College Bankie)

MARK HAILSTONES …..SPECIAL SOUVENIR PROGRAMME MARK HAILSTONES …..SPECIAL SOUVENIR PROGRAMME

Page 12: SPEIAL SOUVENIR PROGRAMME · 6 31MARK HAILSTONES …..SPEIAL SOUVENIR PROGRAMME 100 lub News Below is a list of the people who have joined the Bankies 100 club so far this season

Tonight Clydebank fans have the opportunity to pay tribute to the club’s longest serving player in this testimonial match to

honour the achievements of the one and only Mark Hailstones. Mark was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame at the Sporting

Dinner back in March and now has the chance to take another bow in front of the faithful Bankies support, most of whom have

shared his journey from the bottom tier of the junior leagues to the top over these ten seasons.

When Clydebank Football Club reformed as a junior side back in 2003 they had no manager, no ground and most importantly

no players. The United Clydebank Supporters (UCS) unanimously agreed to approach former centre back Billy “Budgie”

McGhie to take the reins and become the first manager of the newly reformed club. Budgie, who was also inducted into the

Hall of fame this year, is the only other member of the management team or playing staff to have been at the club since its

rebirth and he had his work cut out to get a team together for the start of the 2003-04 season after the club successfully gained

acceptance to join the SJFA and with it admittance into the Central District Second Division. One of his first signings was a

fresh faced twenty year old Balfron boy from Kilpatrick U21s by the name of Mark Hailstones.

As a boyhood Rangers fan, when Mark was approached by the testimonial committee and asked who he’d like to make up

today’s opposition his answer was obvious. “The biggest club in Glasgow”, he said. Unfortunately Celtic were unavailable.

Sadly Partick Thistle too were also unable to send a side. Joking apart, the testimonial committee, and everyone at Clydebank

Football Club, are delighted that Ally McCoist agreed to send a representative side of the newly crowned SFL Third Division

champions, Glasgow Rangers F.C., to Holm Park this evening.

Scottish football was shaken to its very foundations in February of last year when Rangers, the biggest club in the country,

went into administration. By the June there seemed no way that a resolution with their creditors could be agreed and they

entered the liquidation process. The result of that was to see the most successful club in Scotland having to start all over again

in the bottom tier of the SFL, the Third Division. The club were also banned from signing new players for one year and with

several of their star performers leaving it meant Ally McCoist would be forced to play many of his younger players.

Rangers kicked off their season at the end of July in the unfamiliar surroundings of Brechin in the equally unfamiliar Rams-

den’s Cup, a trophy which is open to clubs from the SFL. A win by the odd goal in three saw the young Gers side in round two

where they would meet Falkirk, a side two divisions higher, in August. That didn’t seem to faze Ally McCoist’s youngsters as

they won that tie by the only goal. In round three they faced Queen of the South at Ibrox but lost out on penalties. The Scottish

League Cup, a trophy they have won more than any other club, witnessed the Glasgow giants in round one where they were

drawn against East Fife at Ibrox. They proved no obstacle as Rangers scored four without reply before seeing off Falkirk again

in round two, this time by 3-0. Round three threw up an intriguing tie as SPL Motherwell came to Glasgow but they too were no

match as Rangers again kept a clean sheet when seeing off the Steelmen, winning 2-0. The quarter final proved to be the end

as terry Butcher’s Inverness Caledonian Thistle side went to Ibrox and won 3-0. The Scottish Cup was the only avenue open

to Rangers if they were to have any ambitions of playing European football next term, an arena they are all too familiar with. A

first round bye saw them paired with Highland League side Forres Mechanics in round two and a narrow 1-0 win was enough

to progress. Round three was altogether different as Rangers trounced Alloa 7-0. Another clean sheet in the next round follow-

ing a three goal win over Elgin meant the possibility of a SPL side in the fifth round draw. And so it came to be, finally a draw at

the home of one of the sides that voted to eject Rangers from the SPL, Dundee United. It is well documented that Rangers

fans would vote with their feet if and when they had to travel to one of the clubs who, they feel, betrayed them by not support-

ing their desire to drop just one division following liquidation. And they did as Charles Green refused to take up the club’s

allocation of tickets for a match that United would win 3-0.

However promotion was always the main priority for Rangers and, for the expectant Gers fans, with it the champion-

ship. At home they were very comfortable, winning their first four. At the same time they were finding it tough going on

the road as they drew three and lost one away from home. It took until the end of October before the Glasgow side

would finally win on the road in the league when they defeated Clyde 2-0. After that win they wouldn’t taste defeat away

from home ten of their next twelve games away from home and drawing the other two although they weren’t getting it all

their own way at Ibrox as they managed to lose to clubs such as Annan Athletic and Peterhead during the same period.

The title was only being delayed though and it duly arrived after a no score draw at Montrose and the inevitable rise

from the basement division was delivered by Ally McCoist’s men. Next season should provide a sterner test for Rangers

and with the lifting of the transfer embargo they will have the weight of expectation on their shoulders once again as

they battle to get back to what they perceive to be their rightful place, at the top table of Scottish football.

As a young boy Mark’s hero was a player who delighted the fans of both today’s clubs during a fantastic twenty year

professional career. That player was the late, great Davie Cooper another member of Clydebank’s Hall of Fame. Mark

Hailstones began his career playing down the wing, just like his hero. He first came to light in a Bankies shirt in the

club’s first ever public showing, a friendly at Johnstone Burgh. His first goals for the club came in a pre-season invita-

tional tournament when he notched a double against Irvine Vics in a 6-1 rout. His first competitive goal came a few

weeks later at Lesmahagow, the club’s first ever league goal since returning to the juniors. That first season cemented

Mark as one of Bankies cult heroes and he ended that season as the supporter’s Player of the Year, the Young Player

of the Year and the UCS Trust Player of the Year. He was also named POTY by the Bankies Babes in 05-06 and won

the UCS Trust award again in season 08-09. In the 09-10 season he won yet another award, this time for scoring the

goal of the season. Apparently his memory of these awards isn’t too good as he could only recall winning an award

from his first season when this topic was briefly discussed at the Sporting Dinner after his induction into the Hall of

Fame, perhaps too many drinks that evening Mark? Apart from Davie Cooper there are some other notable players to

have played for both clubs over the years. Bobby Williamson also began his career at Clydebank before going to Ibrox

and, of course, former Rangers and England captain Terry Butcher had a spell with the Bankies towards the end of his

playing days. A number of young players who failed to hit the heights at Rangers also found their way to New Kilbowie

Park over the years with arguably the most successful being Craig Flannigan.

This evening it is all about Mark Hailstones and everyone at Clydebank hopes he has a fantastic day and hopefully he

can find the back of the net to cap off his day.

Titan Talks To…Mark Hailstones

Your favourite Bankies kit?

The current black away one. It's the smartest and it doesn't feel like I'm

wearing a parachute!

Ever come close the leaving the club? I've never even been close to

leaving. Of course I've had the after game thought of "I hate this game

why do I play!" but the real thought of leaving has never been in me.

Do you still have nightmares about THAT chance at the end of the Scottish Cup Final?

That chance I missed in the cup final is the only bad second I've had at Clydebank. Many times I've thought "see

if I miss kicked that, it was in!" Horrible moment! That's all!

What's your thoughts on your forthcoming testimonial? Looking forward to having a good day on the 15th

of August It's a good way for the club and supporters to celebrate an amazing 10 years. Hope everyone has a

great day.

Thanks Mark and all the best Titan.

What are your top 3 goals for Bankies? My free kick

against Coltness in the first season. For me it was the per-

fect way to wrap up an awesome first season in the juniors.

My overhead against Blairgowrie will always be special.

Such a tough game and down to 9 men it's all I had left in

me and so glad it came of for once. The noise from the

supporters was frightening!

The last one is another free kick against Bellshill to secure

promotion to the Super League Premier. I was captain that

day and felt I had to pull another free kick from somewhere

to make sure.

All these goals meant a lot to me and the club, there may be

better goals I've scored but I always remember these.

What has been your Favourite game? It has to be the

Scottish Cup Final even though we lost. It was some day for

the club!

Best player played with? For me it has to be Darian

MacKinnon. He brought so much to the team on and off the

park.

Best Bankies goal scored by someone other than you?

The cup final goal from Chris Mackie. The buzz and noise

from the supporters when that went in was different class.

Favourite moment on the park? That's too tough to an-

swer, there is so many moments I can't pick between them.

All the times we got promoted to cup finals we won I can't

choose.

...and off the park? The party after receiving the league

trophy against Coltness in the first season. Walking into that

hall with all the people in it and the music going was some-

thing I don't think I'll ever experience again.
