ABOUTUSA unique and highly regarded graduate teaching facility, the Speech and Hearing Center at Lehman College provides state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic services to individuals in the New York City Metropolitan area and to members of the Lehman community who have speech, language, hearing, and/or feeding deficits.
Speech and Language Services are delivered by graduate-student clinicians under the close supervision of Clinical Educators, who are speech- language pathologists or audiologists certified by ASHA (the American Speech-Language Hearing Association) and licensed by New York State. In addition to our Specialty Clinics noted, the SHC offers a variety of groups throughout the academic year including our summer program, "Letters and Literacy: Story Time for Lil Ones," for ages 18 mos -5 years. Additionally, Lehman College is now a National Stuttering Foundation site offering monthly support groups in our facility. In future semesters, we hope to offer Social Pragmatic Group for Adolescents, "Trains and Planes" for Children with Autism and more.
The Center also serves as a research laboratory for undergraduate and graduate students and faculty mentors conducting applied clinical research in the areas of auditory perception, brain and language, child language, neuro-linguistics, speech and voice production, and literacy.
The VIVE (Visual Instruction to Drive Expression) Resource Center located in our ground floor clinic is available for students and family members to create visual instruction materials for treatment.
The clinic is equipped with current technology, which permits video observation and recording of clinical sessions for student development. A wireless audio-visual system provides ongoing supervisor-student interaction as well as opportunities for self-reflection.
