Speech and Language Corner January of 2016 Some Ideas to Target at Home Let your child help with making a hot and cold drink (ex. hot chocolate/lemonade). Use small marshmallows to help with counting numbers 1-20. Have your child string cereal on a piece of yarn with tape on one end. Have your child count the pieces of cereal before eating them. Use shaving cream or salt to help your child trace and/or write letter and/or words Draw a snowman on a blue sheet of paper. Then have your child glue on cotton balls to complete the snowman and create a snow scene. What to Teach… Colors of the month: blue/white, gold/silver Shape of the Month: Circle Vocabulary: snow, snowman, hat, button, mittens/gloves, shoes, scarf, branch, stick, wood, eyes, nose, mouth, carrot, eyebrow, belt, snowflake, warm, cold, hot, freeze, freezing, snowball, igloo, polar bear, celebrate, New Year, New Year’s Eve, snow angel, balloons, confetti, hot chocolate, rainy, windy, sunny, marshmallows, clock, party, sled, penguin, weather, cotton ball Verbs: make, plow, drink, build, ski, ice-skate, sled Antonyms/opposites: hot/cold, day/night, white/black, happy/sad Calendar: months of the year Counting: numbers 1-12 Dear Parents and Caregivers, January is the first month of the year. Spend some time with your child and create a 12-month calendar. Have your child ask every family member their birthday and write the dates on the calendar. You can also include all the holidays and family events and vacations on this calendar. Have your child draw a picture related to each month and make sure you leave some room to write a few words about the months. Every month go over the upcoming event and after each event, have your child tell you about his/her experience. Given visual, verbal or tactile cues/prompts, using words, pictures, or tracing, have your child write 1-3 sentences about his/her experience in the designated area.
