Portugal is a notable example among the top ten countries in the world with the lowest mortality rate of children under five,

according to UNICEF's annual report, with a rate of 3.4 deaths under five per thousand births.

Between 1990 and 2011, the mortality rate of children under five years old, born in Portugal, decreased 77 percent.

In 1990, per thousand births died 15 children under five years.

In 2010, the number was registered three children per thousand. The main causes of death recorded in 2010 were neonatal

problems
